If they have an extra expansion slot they do not really need to use to protect anyone worthwhile, it could make for some interesting trade scenarios should some other team(s) have too many players they want to, or have to protect.

Here
If he is indeed signing soon it looks like things will pan out in a favorable way in regards to the expansion exposure.

Home game tomorrow vs the Devils which he certainly will not play in and then the Rangers go on a long road trip out West - EDM, VAN, CGY and then MIN before coming back home to play the Wings.

If he signs sometime over the next 2-10 days i doubt they would fly him out to join the Rangers mid-trip, so the earliest he could play in the NHL would be against Detroit on the the 19th.

Just so happens there will be 10 games remaining on the schedule at that point.

Is expansion really that big of a deal in terms of Kravtsov?

Kravtsov
Zibanejad
Buchnevich
Kreider
Panarin
Chytil
Andersson

DeAngelo
Skjei
Hajek

Lundqvist

Our first round picks and other prospects will all be protected, we likely aren't adding any other roster players without subtracting any.
You just want to see him in Vancouver ;)

You’re really on the Lias Andersson travel plan

Next week will be the 9th time I see him, in the 7th country, across 6 different COMPETITIONS. Austria, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Sweden, Denmark, USA, Canada. CHL, SHL, WJC, EHT, WC, NHL

My Kravtsov meter is currently on 6 countries, 5 games and the draft so across 4 competitions. USA, Finland (the awesome Russian TV appearance), Czech Republic, Canada, Latvia, Slovakia. NHL, KHL, Four Nations, WJC

Agree w posters above, it makes zero sense to lose an exemption. Nothing to gain from it. Start him in camp next year and see where it goes.

Don't hate burning the year the more I think on it, but they have to avoid exposing him at all costs. I assume they know that. If he comes over soon he can play 10, be a scratch for a few to watch some things he needs to work on, etc.

Makes zero sense to play him more than the 10 games and losing that expansion exemption.

Right now it might not seem like a big deal with their roster but you don't know what moves will be made between now and the expansion draft.

TBH, it doesn't really matter financially if the Rangers sign him and lose a year on his ELC. It's more about expansion purposes that make things iffy. They'll work it out....

Yes, if he plays any games in the AHL or NHL under his ELC, it will burn a year of his ELC. His only option to play games is to sign a PTO with Hartford.

For the year to count in terms of the expansion draft, apparently he has to play 11 games in the NHL. So as long as he plays less than that, we won't have to protect him.

The Rangers can play around with the ten games regarding the expansion draft exemption. They don’t have to play him in every game. Teams give players 9 games and then send them back to junior to slide the contract for 18 or 19 year olds. Those players don’t play nine games in a row and they don’t have to make the decision on playing the player for a 10th right away.

They begin Kravstov’s contract this season and they begin the arbitration clock. He needs 4 years. Kravstov becomes a Group II with no arbitration rights after 20-21 instead of 21-22.

Kravstov won’t get any credit for service time for this season towards group III. 40 games on the NHL roster.

7 years accrued or age 27.

Kravstov’s age as of July 1 of that season. He turns 20 this December.

2019-20 20 years old
2020-21 21 years old
2021-22 22 years old
2022-23 23 years old
2023-24 24
2024-25 25
2025-26 26
2026-27 27

Bringing Kravstov over and playing him 10 NHL games isn’t the worst idea in the world. Let him gain some NHL experience. He gets a feel of New York. Experience NHL life.

Train with Prentiss this summer and get ready for next season.

The Rangers are continuing to work on bringing Vitali Kravtsov to New York so the 2018 first-rounder can spend time around the team and acclimate himself to NHL surroundings, but it is no sure thing that will happen, according to individuals with knowledge of the situation.

Though Kravtsov’s KHL team, Traktor Chelyabinsk, was eliminated from the playoffs last Monday, the 19-year-old’s contract does not expire until April 30. But even if a release can be arranged, the Rangers won’t sign him to an entry-level deal beginning with this season, for that would automatically burn the first year of a three-year contract.

An ATO (Amateur Try Out) that would allow the ninth-overall selection to play for the AHL Wolf Pack apparently is highly unlikely.

They could bring Kravtsov to New York and have him skate with the team in practice. Have him get to know the coaches and his teammates. Some of them will still be here next season.

Back in 2004,the Rangers had RJ Umberger skate with the team in practice when they acquired him from Vancouver for Rucinsky. The Rangers didn't end up signing the player and they got a 2nd round comp pick. Umberger was an unsigned player. He skated with the team.
