That is entirely possible, but when he said targeting 5 players means he might think there's a handful of guys that are in one or two tiers and if he can grab them he will.

Possible. He also might feel that there are a couple of guys they really like that they figure will go in the 15-20 range, so the goal would be to get out of the 26-31 range.

HF: "this is a long process. Maybe a 5-6 year rebuild. We must be patient and trust the process."

Also HF: "Trade three picks for one because I need the better high schooler RIGHT NOW!!!"
I'm confused. Those two statements don't contradict each other the way this post implies.

It's all subjective. If you feel the talent of one guy is so great than of course you'd want to trade up for him especially when later first round picks could end up being two busts or maybe 1 bust and 1 player who becomes a 3rd liner at best. Are we really dying to hold onto 24 and 28?

Nobody here is saying trade 3 picks for 1.

I'd have no problem with doing it if our scouts feel Svech or Zadina is worth it.

Gorton said he was disappointed. He is SO stupid, and should not be pitied.

If he really is, and isn’t just saying that for fan consumption, then I’ve lost a little respect for him.

I’m sure he’s just shrugging his shoulders and saying “oh well” to everyone else.

Jeffrey, the correct response is, “We didn’t want one of those stupid ol’ picks anyway. Have you see Dahlin? He looks like the kid from Deliverance! Nine for life *****es!”

I can't get angry at the internet narrative of the man that was made to contrast other internet narratives of him.

Wouldn't be fair.

You’d lose respect for him because he’s disappointed his team didn’t move up?

Lol.

Honestly one of the most ridiculous things I’ve ever read.

The consensus among the scouts are that Dahlin and Svech are in a league of their own and then there's a few tiers below that of the next 10 players, how man tiers and what's the drop off ... that's a little subjective.

You don't trade up unless it's for a guy who is universally considered better than everyone else remaining. Otherwise you are just trading up assuming that your draft board is 100% correct and better than every other teams when it almost certainly is not.

However if that is the case then it will cost more to trade up to that spot and the team that has the pick is less likely to trade down. An example would be the McDavid/Eichel draft. Trading up to 3 is stupid. There were several guys considered for that pick. Trading up to 1 or 2 would be smart as everyone know McDavid and then Eichel were far better prospects than the guys in consideration for pick 3. Just a theoretical example obviously those two picks were not available.

Yes we are dying to hold onto them. We want as many as possible. We're drafting children. Play the odds.

Exactly.

1. Dahlin, 2. Svechnikov, 3. Zadina, 4. Boqvist, 5. Wahlstrom
6. Dobson, 7. Bouchard, 8. Hughes, 9. Tkachuk

I (knock on wood) should be happy.

So it wasn't a code word for trading up for Dahlin?

This was the correct Code for Dahlin.
