My question is this: For previous drawings, reps for the teams who witnessed it have to stay in the room with no phones or anything until it's revealed on TV. Since they still have to do 1-3 in like...35 minutes...have these people just been sitting in the room since 7pm?

Bettman better have hooked them up with like...TV's and alcohol. Lord knows if I want to be locked up for that long in a tiny room.

And it's not like reps for all the other teams can be released out of the room because in order to get picks 4-15, you have to do 1-3.

So reps for every team knows picks 1-15.

The narrative that trading up all the time is not worth it is such nonsense. Everything is contextual. Trading up for the sake of it is DUMB, similarly, staying put when a player falls who you love and the team has more needs (another player or a later pick) is also DUMB. It's all situation based.

Fortnite and Girl Scout cookies. Gorts ate all the Dosi Doh’s. Again.

It's also about targeting players that fit the team you are building. BPA is one part of the formula, especially for an established team. But, in a draft that has players of similar values, if you see a player who is a better fit for what you're building, go get him.

Toughness, grobble grobble, character, grobble grobble...
Yeah cool, on top of fantastic playmaking skills, hockey IQ, speed, skill, and strength. I’d be so mad about having the kid that just dominated the U20s and had an outstanding freshman year (not directed at you). The Tkachuk meme is so annoying.

THE HORRORRRRRRR

Everyone has their own formula, me personally, I go BPA every time no matter what my need is. I don't believe in drafting for need in the NHL. Football is a little different.

I think the point that most people who say “don’t trade up” are making is that GMs and scouting staffs shouldn’t be so quick to trust that it’s worth it because evidence shows it usually isn’t.

But again, this goes a little into gamblers fallacy too. None of those previous examples apply to the player you pick, just like nothing about previous 9th overalls applies to the guy we will be taking. Plus, try telling GMs and scouts they shouldn’t trust themselves.

Yeah, if we got Tkachuk at 9 I'd be extremely happy. The issue was making the absurd choice of Tkachuk over a Svechnikov or Zadina.

Exactly this. Or for me, Zadina. Those three are top-3. The issue is going to be that someone may reach for Tkachuk up there, not that he’s a bad prospect

All the Tkachuk haters don't need to worry.
He'll be long gone before #9.
Unfortunately, he'll be a much better pick than anything the NYR get..

And yet, there are many examples of where moving up has been worth the gamble. Staal, Parise, Couture and Ladd were all worth the price that was paid to move up.

What if there is no clear BPA? Which describes about 90% of the draft.

Then you consult the angular momentum of Neptune.

Outside of maybe the top four or five picks, there really isn't a BPA, in the objective sense.

All team's draft boards become different after those first few picks. So BPA becomes subjective quickly.

Doesn’t really have much to do with the Rangers moving up either.
