I dunno, @silverfish and @Kovalev27, I'm going to try to bridge the gap to you guys: I remember seeing plenty of mocks where he was in the teens, 4-8 picks away from where we took him. To my mind, since those were all still part of the same tier, taking him at 7 was not a reach, in the same way that McIlrath, for example, was in 2010.

But I will grant you, I don't remember seeing a single mock that had him in the top ten. So, in that sense, I guess you could argue he was a minor reach? Does that work for everyone?

Lias is about 5’11 200 lbs. I am a bit colored watching his dad who was a fantastic skater, but I definitely wouldn’t rule out that Lias can improve his skating a lot. And it’s a lot better now than in September when he obviously was very worn out. He is already very good at twisting and turning, but his edge work is a little choppy/rough so that he loses speed more than he should. Can he cut a little weight and turn a little baby fat into better muscles it will make a big difference. His technique could also improve some for sure.

Good skating coaches can do a lot nowadays. One of the biggest improvements I’ve seen is Ortmayer from when he first got a shot after the 04’ tear down and until he came back for the 05’ camp after the lockout year. Ortmayer when he ‘peaked’ actually skated pretty well, was very fast in on the back check and could drive the puck up the ice to he redline. He was one of the worst skaters I’ve seen in the NHL when he came up in 04’.

Is Petterson playing? Haven't noticed him at all.

Edit: Just saw him and they said he's back on, guess he was in the locker room or something briefly.

I’ve been thinking lately Lias can be a Kadri type of player. I would like him to improve his skating because I think it takes away from him being able to carry the puck through the neutral zone

Lias is actually quick over a short distance, that's why he's so effective in both zones from the hash marks down. He's just an awkward skater and his top end speed is garbage.

He's like Gimli.

The twelve sets of 2017 final draft rankings listed on mynhldraft have Lias everywhere from 11th to 26th.

His median ranking = 16
His average ranking = 16.6

Is he a bust? No, that's stupid.
Will he live up the 7th overall pick? Possibly.
Was he a reach? Undoubtedly.

The big ice is cool for a change but I'm really happy NHL plays on a smaller surface. Way too much space out there like this imo.

Ziba!

Think he has much more talent than Kadri. Better hands, vision and shot.

Yeah, to compare it to this year, if Wahlstrom goes 7 is that a reach? If Hughes goes 8 is he a faller? There's a big pack of guys thought to be very similar in terms of talent and potential. They're going to have to go in some order, one at a time. Guys who could have gone earlier or later going at different position in that same pack aren't necessarily reaches or fallers imo.

Lias with a thunderous offensive hit. Dizzied the Belarussian player.

Pettersson has fantastic talents but he isn’t close to being NHL ready. Must fill out and become a lot stronger.

It annoys me a lot when these kids are described. You see someone describe Pettersson, and it’s said what a fantastic talent he is. Without getting into how weak he is physically and how he isn’t quick on his skates since he is too weak, could take 2-3 years before he is up to standards to play to his strength in the NHL. Boqvist is subscribed as a super offensive talent without any flaws. Despite having very fundamental issues defensively. A scouting report on Oliver Wahlstrom can be a half pager and not breath one bit of how immobile he is on the ice. And so forth and so forth.

It’s annoying because many who don’t watch the kids a lot think all other kids out there are perfect without any flaws but that the kids we get — who they see more — are called out for their flaws like it’s the end of the world if they aren’t perfect at 17-18.

To be honest other than watching pettersson snipe from the top of the circles In the WjCs on the pp nothing else about his game has impressed me much when I’ve seen him

Same.

Impossible to ignore the numbers that he has put up so far this year, but he hasn't been as good as I've expected when I've seen him play.

I agree but also propose to everyone to stop making references to “reach” or “bust” every time Lias does something because it will inevitably trigger @Kovalev27 ‘s post in response (because he can’t just ignore it) and so the damn cycle repeats all over again.

Yeah that’s kind of where I’m at. Numbers are undeniable but every time I’ve actually seen him play other than the power play shot I’ve been unimpressed. Very one dimensional

I can’t ignore it? I had nothing but compliments for the kid the whole game. There are a lot of posters here that like to exaggerate and throw the word Bust around. Never used by me once. But I’m the one that can’t ignore it ok lol.

You’re right. I intended to mention that your posts about Lias have been nothing but complimentary recently, but forgot to write it before posting.

But I think you missed my point - if someone else makes a tong-in-cheek post about Lias being “reach” - you always response.
