Anyone caught any video of Lias offensive hit late in the game? Was pretty sick.

Lias had a good game. A nice shot at the end. He was off on a breakaway but long pass across the ice seemed to get air borne and bounce over his stick. He moves very well in the offensive zone, he is really smart.

Think Lias was much better than Elias Pettersson. Pettersson has amazing hands and ability to see the play develop and make it look easy, but the big difference between the SHL and international hockey are how much stronger the Ds are. Then there is another gigantic leap to the NHL. Petersson isn’t a Marner type who flies around all Ds. He plays mostly in traffic, taking a hit, slipping away, getting open. He has to grow big time before he is NHL ready. I remember Sedins rookie season in the NHL so well. They were big, 6’2, 200-210 lbs at least. They had pwned the SHL and he WCH the year before, I saw them live in that WCH in Russia, St Petersburgh, in 99’. They were sick. They came to the NHL and struggled mightly. Whenever they tried to circle and protect the puck the NHL Ds just hammered them so hard in the back and took the puck.

Henrik Sedins stats were:
D+2 29 pts in 82 games
D+3 36 pts in 82 games
D+4 39 pts in 78 games
D+5 42 pts in 76 games
Lockout
D+7 75 pts in 80 games

Dans a tad better. They were mega hyped when they left Sweden, but for many many years they were seen as BIG busts, by many, and a was a big joke.

I — think — Petersson will become a great player. He is a very special kid, super low key and so drawed back. But he just loves the game so much and his focus is just unbelieveable. I think he will push himself so hard, and eveually become like a top 3 scorer in the league. But it is — far — from a given. The league is very different now than when the Sedins entered the NHL and the refs just laughed when Chris Chelios broke two sticks by cross checking the Sedins in the back the same game (Dan caught him with an offensive hit the first hit, then CC destroyed them every shift a hole game). But I wouldn’t at all be surprised if for 2,3 even 4 years people are trashing Petersson, calling the SHL a joke since he could dominate it etc. Its not a given since Petersson is such a good shooter on the PP and might get some numbers of it early, but it’s not a lock either. AND, if the kid starts to get some injuries, he struggles in Vancouver, loses confidence etc — there is always a risk of things going south.

My point is just, we got to be patient with these things. I think our guys have a tendency to look for the right people more than anything, because even if there are ups and downs they should be able to push in the right directions. We must also be humble, it’s a heck of a journey these kids have infront of them.

Quinn Hughes has not looked outmatched today like I thought he might.

I thought he looked awful early on, and then he was decent later on once he adjusted to the faster game. He's not the biggest problem. Murphy and Jensen are bigger problems, but he still had no business being picked after struggling at the WJC. This is a big step up from that.

Nice games from our players. All the forwards got points, and Pionk was +3.

Pionk was excellent, don't know why he was playing so little. Blashill is a bad hockey coach, and I knew he'd play favorites by giving a bigger role to Jensen than Pionk. Jensen was terrible, Pionk was excellent. Lets see the pairings changed. Pionk should've been on pair 1. Murphy is a plug on pair 2, but he's an assistant captain and veteran, so I guess that gets him a bigger role than he deserves. He's also the only "big" defenseman. Kreids had a very nice assist to Larkin for the second goal, and the first assist was a nice redirection.

Lias is about 5’11 200 lbs. I am a bit colored watching his dad who was a fantastic skater, but I definitely wouldn’t rule out that Lias can improve his skating a lot. And it’s a lot better now than in September when he obviously was very worn out. He is already very good at twisting and turning, but his edge work is a little choppy/rough so that he loses speed more than he should. Can he cut a little weight and turn a little baby fat into better muscles it will make a big difference. His technique could also improve some for sure.

Good skating coaches can do a lot nowadays. One of the biggest improvements I’ve seen is Ortmayer from when he first got a shot after the 04’ tear down and until he came back for the 05’ camp after the lockout year. Ortmayer when he ‘peaked’ actually skated pretty well, was very fast in on the back check and could drive the puck up the ice to he redline. He was one of the worst skaters I’ve seen in the NHL when he came up in 04’.

This is a great analysis. I admittedly didn't like the pick - I was hoping for Mittelstadt. But every org needs an array of skillsets and what Lias projects too would certainly be a valued element - the telecast comparing him to kunitz really made it sting but i digress.

I thought all my worst fears were validated when i first saw him play. He def has a clunky/choppy stride, and he is not a "puck carrier" player. He did always appear to have good balance, hockey sense, and zero aversion to contact. from traverse to the world juniors (where i LOVED the medal toss) to the end of season to now at the worlds he has definitely shown growth which is very promising. But this stage is so so so critical to panning out - if you are familiar w/ finance its like compound interest - every success can initiate a huge outsized return on overall development. i actually like backstrom in wash as a (best case) comparable, albeit with significant caveats. 1 - we aint got an ovi for him to team up w/ now or probably ever, and 2, backs is far more involved as a puck mover. that said the hockey sense, body type, quick mind/hands, and overall competitiveness are definitely similar. if he can add some explosiveness and edge work, which aren't at all out of the question and frankly, expected, this may turn out to be a major coup at 7.

The twelve sets of 2017 final draft rankings listed on mynhldraft have Lias everywhere from 11th to 26th.

His median ranking = 16
His average ranking = 16.6

Is he a bust? No, that's stupid.
Will he live up the 7th overall pick? Possibly.
Was he a reach? Undoubtedly.

For your consideration:

  • THW Alternate: 16th (January)
  • Future Considerations: 10th (Winter) <-----
  • ISS: 25th (January)
  • Bob McKenzie: 15th (Mid-season)
  • Craig Button: 9th (January) <------

Nation Network 2017 Prospect Profile: #14 – Lias Andersson

Not a reach. But I guess that depends on your definition. If certain outlets have him in the top 10, and he's taken 7th, that's not a "reach" to me and, specifically, not to Andersson who nearly EVERYONE had as a shoe-in NHL'er. That was part of his allure. I guess I'll agree to disagree.

Just saw that looks like he’s penciled in as 4th line left wing. He’s been their best player in almost every lead up game. Coach is a moron

I said Chytil was their best player in the lead up games. Which he was.

So you misunderstood my post.

I didn't. He wasn't their best players in the games leading up to the WC. Everyone who was at the games in Pardubice will agree. Chytil isn't bad, but he isn't the best player on that team this year

probably he was the best about go straight into the goal. NA style helps him a lot.

Hes up there and it would be Zadina if the coach didn't cut him

Zadina didn't impress playing against grown-ups in his games for his country. I have no problem with him not being on the team. Kaut, Necas and Chytil weren't pushed around, weren't out-muscled. I know it's cliche, but Zadina playing against kids all year long didn't really prepare him for this tournament. I think the physical aspect is severely underestimated in this.

Chytil on the 3rd line makes sense. He will get his chance. But the Czech Republic has better options, better suited for this level of play, to be on the top line. As mentioned before, guys like Horak, Faksa, and even Plekanec, are better than Chytil and all play center. On the wing, Jaskin, Cervenka and arguably Repik are better options at this level.

I love Chytil, but we have to remember he is 18 years old. This isn't the World Juniors, or the AHL. This is the World Championships where the opposition exists of NHL, SHL and KHL players primarily.

Button's final rankings had him at #18 and Future Considerations at #13. The highest he was ranked (in their final rankings) by the twelve individuals/publications that I checked was 11th; and that was by hockeyprospect.

I'm totally fine agreeing to disagree though. It's quite possible that our definition of "reach" is too dissimilar to bridge, and this horse has been beaten to death.

Either way, Lias has been great so far, and his absolute floor looks to be an above average 3C. That's pretty ridiculous to be able to say that for a 19-year old kid.
