I don't know if I'd call them "way better". Better, yeah, but they definitely won't be worth anything close to the contracts they get in free agency. We'd be way better off with taking on cap dumps, signing someone cheap like Archibald, and/or letting prospects battle it out for any remaining spots.
That's the thing, the contracts may be hard to swallow. Even if they are way better, there really is no point in overpaying, especially on term.
There's probably enough cap room that they could still take on cap dumps but, yeah, that is a factor too.

Jesus Christ.

You'd have to be mentally handicapped to get in a bidding war for 33 y/o Jay Beagle.

And $12 million for Roussel is one of the funniest things I've ever heard. And having him on the roster will get Pettersson and Boeser punched more, not less. And is the sort of player who'll burn out by 30 and started showing signs of it last year.

IF he signs rousell and beagle (depends on the contracts) while getting rid of gagner and granlund I’d be ok with it. But adding more bottom 6 fodder while keeping those guys and blocking younger players is just stupid

To me, it would seem that a team doing this would be planning on 2-3 year tank. Now if the Canucks actually had a plan..

I like Roussel, but if you're paying 3M+ for him and 2.5M+for Beagle, you're better off just spending that money on a single player who you know will play a big role for you

Like a Calvin De Haan

Then go bargain bin shopping for bottom 6 "character" guys. Calvert, Schaller, Peca, etc.

I'd much rather do that, even if I end up spending about 500-750K more.

Forget about the Tavares sweepstakes. Jimbo and Trev are going all in on bidding wars for 5 and 7 goal scorers.

Why would Benning take on other team's bad contracts when he can just sign his own?

The Beagle and Roussel contracts haven't even been registered with the NHL and they're already 2 contracts I wish the team didn't have.

They are going to sign a bunch of crap to add to all the other crap already here. Are we suppose to just ignore Eriksson, Sutter, Gagner, Gudbranson, etc? Weren't these players suppose to be your "culture carriers"?

They will continue to make the same mistakes and spend money simply because they have cap space. These contracts signed this summer will soon prove to be disasters and Benning will be back next summer throwing money away on more 4th liners because he still is clueless.

If our pro scouting was any good they should be able to unearth a hidden gem or two barried in another system without dedicating term or money. Unfortunately we have a lazy management group that thinks throwing money at some random 3rd or 4th liner is the answer.

Looking back at my list of UFA targets, I had Antoine Roussell on there. I mentioned I'd go to a maximum of $2.5M, but on a 1 year deal only. Giving him 4 years at over $3M per year is downright comical.

We were right. Benning is still an idiot, and now that he has all this cap space he's showing just how stupid he is. All you people who said "oh he's learning, he's a great GM" are looking really..."intelligent" right now.

Here's Canucks Army's take on Beagle:

"Beagle was leaned on by the Stanley Cup-winning Capitals to win key face-offs, kill penalties and centre the 4th line. He provides coveted intangibles including grit, but the merit of Vancouver’s interest should be questioned given that they already have a similar pivot in Brandon Sutter."

Report: Canucks Are Front-Runners For Jay Beagle

Those advocating for this signing still haven't answered this objection. If you're in favour of this signing, how do you justify Beagle and Sutter on the same team? How do you expect a team that was so bad at scoring goals last season to be anything but worse with these two centring two lines?

what teams have signed players like Beagle and Roussel to 3 and 4 year UFA deals? Has this been a successful strategy for any other club? When has paying ufa rates for players to fill the bottom of your lineup worked? Are the canucks really buying "grit" on the ufa market in 2018?? I don't get it.

Yes
Explain why.
imo he is too slow to play in the NHL. He started
Off adding a physical element to the team and by mid season it disappeared. If you are going to be slow and drag your linemates down then you better at least provide some physicality. Guy thinks he is a finesse player now lol

It looks like Roussel didn't have a good season last season, but for the analytics crowd, isn't Roussel a good player considering his usage?
