I don't think it wouldn't mattered if Scotty Bowman Lou Lamoriello or the damn Pope was our GM - you fail to see that no matter what our team was headed for disaster thanks to previous management's extremely poor drafting and win now at the expense of our futures attitude. Minor detail that you conveniently leave out when assessing Bennings track record. Like yeah ideally he should have turned all those second round assetts into Norris trophy candidates.........

Anyhoo - don't quit your day job is all that I can say. You have a one track mind and it's stuck on repeat........around and around and around...........I'm gonna exit this convo as shouting at the wall is only fun for soo long........

I'm not failing to see anything. I'm seeing a GM who took over a team in that spot and rather than trying to rebuild he continued to sell futures trying to push for the playoffs every year. That has led to a prolonged stay at the bottom, and having a prospect pool that isn't as good as it should have been by now. And that's even including the two blown first round picks in 2014 and 2016. This is evidenced by the fact that Benning traded away as many draft picks in only 2 years as Gillis did in all 6 years that he was the GM. If you want to talk about a GM mortgaging the future, look no further than Jim Benning.

I'm not the one with a one track mind, nor am I the one who just basically ignored all those refuted points. Reality is what it is and so far it's proven me right. And it will continue to prove me right until there is a managerial regime change.

This is coming from IMac, but really I'll believe it when I see it. I've also lost all faith like many so if they don't do something stupid in FA I think it'll come with a trade.

I would be totally fine if they were a cap floor team this season. It's not a high bar to clear to have a successful free agency season...just don't f*** up by signing any medium/long-term deals (anything above 2 years), and no big dollar contracts. This isn't hard.

Only way I look at Burrows is if he wanted to start transitioning into coaching with a mentor role with the Comets. Just not an NHLer anymore, but I think he could be a good coach, and would love to have him working with our prospects in Utica. I'd be fine using a contract slot on that, as long as the $$$ was below the penalty threshold.

Why use a contract slot on a coach though? That makes no sense. There's no contract limit on "player development assistant to the assistant regional managers" or whatever. Use that sort of deal, if that's what you want Burrows doing.

Not as a coach, as a player transitioning into coaching. If Burrows didn't want to hang up the skates just yet, and wanted an NHL contract just to "keep the dream alive" for another year or two, I'd be okay giving up the contract slot for that.

Burrows back as much as I loved him as a Canuck is a bad move. Let the kids play, see what you truly have in the likes of Baertschi, Granlund, Goldobin, Leipsic and Virtanen. Too many variables to warrant bringing in a guy just for nostalgia. I would however bring him in on a courtesy PTO. Let him play only in the last home pre-season game and let him retire on ice at the end of it. That would be a cool send off for him to still get one game in before riding off. Him at camp as well would be a good mentor to teach the younger guys who haven't met him before about work ethic, playing your role etc.

And around and around we go.......

2) After failed Hamhius debacle has since gotten rid of expected tradeable assetts at the deadline

4) Signing contracts that are in line with market value - I know everyone kicks and screams about Gudbranson but that contract was actually less then what he would have gotten had he signed with another team in free agency (I can already hear the screams from the masses on this board - I set the + - on meltdowns at this comment at 19)

5) Not letting cap money burn a hole is his pocket - Unlike most of the Doom and Gloom crowd who were certain that he was going to do just that I'm predicting a rather slow free agent signing period and all indications are that we will start the season WELLLL under the cap.

#letthetantrumsbegin

2) admitted that he was forced to trade Hansen because of expansion draft, and got terrible value for him. Was unable to secure a single pick for a 55 point Vanek at the deadline and instead got yet another cast off to add to the pile. Got to make a trade with one of the only other GMs that may be less competent than Benning for Burrows, but will definitely give him credit that this was a no brainer trade, and an incredible accomplishment when viewed against Benning's body of work

4) Brayden McNabb, 4 x 2.5 Stephen Johns 3 x 2.25. Similar aged players with similar roles, just no draft pedigree and both guys don't have a strong jawline. Even Jack Johnson, known terrible defender is about to get less than Gudbranson, and even has the draft pedigree.

5) this is really funny considering this still has yet to happen as we have the UFA period to endure, but this is a team that spent to the cap (and even went over the cap last year) while being the worst team in the NHL. How can anyone give him points for this yet?

Not adding anyone could be fine, there are always surprising players placed on waivers every year. Could just pick one up if a player disappoints.

I do see the Canucks signing a Dorsett replacement, since Green is obsessed with his grit...

I guess i just don't really understand how that would work, or what the point would be. Players have to play, that's their job. There's really no such thing as a "player coach" in today's NHL. You're either coaching, or you're playing. Both roles are too demanding and all-encompassing to double-dip or crossover like that.

If Burrows is signed to a player contract and "playing" the game...that's all he's going to be doing. With how badly his game has fallen off, he'd be struggling tooth and nail just to earn a smidge of icetime. Maybe sharing some advice and talking things through with linemates, but certainly not "coaching" in between shifts.

If what you want is Burrows as a player development guy/coach/something when he does finally hang up the skates, you do that. You wait until he's done playing (which frankly, may be this summer...short of a PTO somewhere looking for "veteran bodies" to pad out an exhibition roster. Then you sign him as a staff guy, like Ryan Johnson...and let him start working with the young players that way.

Canucks Army advocating that centers Victor Rask and Lucas Wallmark might be available from Carolina. Rask is due $4 million a season for the next four years, and Carolina may want to get out from under it. Maybe a hockey trade? Hutton, Baertschi and a few other pieces?

No thanks to Rask. Their top two choices were Wallmark and Shore. Haven't seen very much of Wallmark but they seem like good targets imo.

@biturbo19 you are overthinking what I am saying. I don't think Burrows would go play in the AHL unless he was interested in going into coaching. Then he might go play a couple years in the minors, spending as much time with the coaches as he could, asking questions about process, maybe sitting in on some coaches' meetings etc.

I don't think Burrows would go play in the AHL just because he wasn't ready to retire even though he was no longer an AHL player. In that case, I'd expect he'd go to Europe (I'd rather spend my final years living in a European country, playing a less physical brand of hockey, rather than busing around NA).

So if he played in the AHL, I'd expect it to be a "transition" period as he learns about coaching. I'd be willing to spend a contract slot on this Burrows even though that contract slot has nearly nil chance of being an NHLer at this point.

Enough with Burrows already. He is one of my all time favourite Canucks but it’s time to move on. With the Sedins retired we can finally turn the page to the next chapter and watch a new core start to emerge. Let the youngsters play, do not sign garbage ufas to block roster spots.

use cap space to acquire draft picks, take on bad contracts with 1-2 years.

do it
That would be what a rebuilding team would do...

Except this team isn't rebuilding. It's been forced into something vaguely resembling rebuilding while trying to compete but being so bad at it.

Initially I was down for the nostalgia of Burrows and Hansen, but I think it'd be like seeing Al Jourgensen live in 2018. Thinking about it a bit more I think I want them to stay in my head as awesome.

Hmm...Benning loves his failed first-round draft picks from yesteryear....and Nail Yakupov is set to be a UFA once again.
That would be so sweet if we could get him cheaply... he was a #1 overall pick in his draft year!!

Please, Jim!!!

I suspect Grabner will be all about seeking term, he seems like the type that could disappear from the NHL any given offseason. He's going to want to make some gauranteed money.

I bet there are teams that offer him 3 - 4 years, and I hope it isn't us.

Grabner is one WEIRD player,

His career is checkered with the oddest stat lines

He scores.....then vanishes....THEN SCORES....then he can't play hockey....then SCORES.
ect

And all the while NO ASSISTS, I can't think of any other player like him, he reminds me of Jack Johnston in that he is a statistical anomaly,

In Jacks case, he might just be the worst NHL defenseman EVER on paper (And apparently in person too)

Two very odd players....throw in the other Johnston from Colorado, he's weird too.

I'm really interested to see what Pateryn and Folin go for. It should be a good indication of what market value would've been for Gudbranson.
