If Barron prioritizes his hockey career, he should join Hartford. There's always time for college. He can go at night or after his hockey career. He's obviously able to hold up at the AHL level. He will get better coaching, he will play in twice as many games he'll have the Rangers eye on him.

I think he's ready or close enough for the AHL but I have a hunch he's going back to Cornell for his junior year. I would not be that pleased if he stuck it out for all four. That makes me kind of paranoid that the player will wait it out until August and then sign with someone else.

Perhaps Adam Fox is going to be the Ranger next prospect:

Hearing that the Hurricanes have been informed Adam Fox isn't likely to sign with them, that a trade would be the desired route, and I'm guessing the Rangers would top the d-man's list. Carolina looking at its options...

Obviously would be better for Fox to have the trade happen sooner than later so he can sign and burn first year of entry-level deal. On other hand, the 'Canes have to do what's right for them. Trading him soon or waiting until summer?

And I suppose you always have to keep the door open that Fox changes his mind and signs with Carolina in the end ... we shall see...

Rangers have a lot of prospects but could use a young, RHD... so Fox would be of interest, I believe, to the Blueshirts. But at what price? They're not going to pay a first-round pick, I don't imagine, to get it done. So what's fair compensation?

We dealt 2 2nd rounders for Tim Erixon, though he was a bit younger.

Weird RD situation for the Rangers though with DeAngelo, Pionk, Shattenkirk, Fox...

on the other hand the only guy of note who shoots right and is in the system is Keane. I'd probably say if they could trade Shattenkirk in the next year and end the Pionk experiment then acquire a bigger but still solid vet RD then they could run with DeAngelo and Fox on the right

If Fox declares his intention to become a free agent they have literally no leverage. They'd probably have to accept a mid/late conditional pick or something.

But if he declares to become a free agent, why waste any assets? I go one step further in saying that unless Fox signs this year, it is a waste of assets to trade for him.

Its the opportunity to have him play and get professional experience next season vs 2 years I guess.

What I am saying is that if he is still staying in college after we trade for his rights, it just isn't worth it.

Only sacrifice the assets, if it means he signs his ELC this summer

Barron was bad yesterday from my view. Wasn't skating well, couldn't win a draw, wasn't able to carry the puck at all. The whole team was bad but if you're going to be the guy, you have to be able to get something going and he couldn't. I think he would benefit from another year in college as I've said previously. I think this game might've shown him he's not ready if he got taken out of the game by Providence (who while not under-seeded because they underachieved, are really talented).

I think he wants to get traded like before the end of this season to burn a year off his ELC. From what I remember he burns a year even if he doesnt dress for a game.

I think Fox is a good enough prospect that I would happily burn a mid round pick to ensure that we could talk to him before anyone else. And RHD is such a tough position to fill.

Bring him in.

Every team covets these guys and we’re about to (hopefully) have a plethora of them. We’ll need more forward help and one of our ‘extra, but really great RD prospects/younger guys’ will go a loooooong way in the forward market.

If Gorts gets Fox in, it’s a truly splendid problem to have.

I like the player a lot but I agree with you. Unless he'd be willing to sign with us right now I wouldn't be going overboard to make a deal. But if Carolina would accept a 3rd and I had Fox's word he'd sign with us I might do that and wait a season but that's about as far as I'd go.

A pair of seconds and a prospect like Gropp or Gettinger, maybe also a higher prospect like Barron or Rykov if they like Fox enough.

Would people pay our second, Dallas second, Barron and Gettinger for Fox?

This is my train of thought, too. It's pretty widely assumed that the Rangers are at the top of his list. Doesn't make sense to trade for him unless it is a 3rd or 4th rounder, but that's if he doesn't stay in college.

Well I said a conditional pick. The condition would be him signing.

Otherwise it would still potentially be worth it for a late pick if you really think you can sign him. I think he's signable, just not in Carolina.

But you are assuming that he really wants to stay in college for 4 years and become a free agent as opposed to using that threat as leverage to get Carolina to trade him to a team for whom he would sign. We don't no what Fox wants to do but if he really wanted to sign with the Rangers and force the issue he would threaten to stay in college as he has done. If Fox does want to stay in college there is no reason to trade for him when you could get him for free next August 15.

That's a massive overpayment for a player who doesn't want to sign until he finishes his senior year
