Well, looking at those numbers (and ignoring anyone with less 100 minutes), we actually miss VdV and PEB on the PK.
And Luke Schenn and MDV, while Provorov sucks - which makes me suspicious of the value of these numbers.

How about xGA/60? This would seem to take goalies out of it, which you have to do over a 5 year period.
Yes, Filppula and Hagg sucked, but on the other hand VdV was really good. As was Manning.
MDZ might be the biggest surprise to me, followed by L Schenn.
And yes, MacDonald should be one of the four PK defensemen this year when he returns.

Simmons 4.55
Raffl 5.18
VdV 5.66
Read 6.06
Laughton 6.07
PEB 6.15
Couts 6.26
Giroux 6.29
Hall 6.32
Talbot 7.49
Filppula 7.62

Kimmo 5.46
MDZ 5.87
Manning 5.93
L Schenn 5.98
Gudas 6.29
MacDonald 6.30
Provorov 6.34
Schultz 6.60
Coburn 6.64
Grossman 6.99
Hagg 7.29

How was NAK on the LHV PK? He seems to have the skill set to excel in that role if he makes the team.

I never got the feeling NAK had great hockey sense.

He’s fast, when he uses it. He’s strong, when he uses it. But I never got the impression he saw the ice well. That could hurt in an NHL PK role.

You'd think so, right?

The Phantoms rarely if ever used him on the PK. So, he wasn't used on the PP time to "prepare" him for the NHL, unlike Vecchione or Leier. But they also never used him on the PK to "prepare" him for the NHL. But if the team is doing it, it must be the right decision. Just have to trust the process.

Ideally, I would like to see a more aggressive forward pairing with speed. However, it seems to me that Berube implemented an aggressive PK and they got torn to shreds. I am in the minority but I don't think the PK has to be rebuilt from scratch. I remember a ton of PKs where they had all but killed the penalty, with plenty of clears and even some SH chances, only to give up a goal in the last ~20 seconds. Plus, there has to be some adaptation to the opponent's PP approach.

The 29th ranked PK over last 4 years absolutely needs to be rebuilt from scratch.

I would take a pk that trades dangerous chances for both teams over our current pk anyday. At the very least, nothing changes except we get some scoring chances too.

This is what I thought, when I crunched those numbers.

1) Leier was useless on PK. Since a 4th liner often gets that role in NHL, or at least on this Flyers team, it's important to make sure whomever ends up there can at least do this reasonably. or get quickly moved out of the role

2) Raffl and Simmonds did and do very well in limited roles. I think they simply have enough NHL experience to understand the strengths of the players they are facing, proper gap control and what they can get away with 1 man down. Younger players have a much steeper learning curve.

3) PK stalwarts Couts and Provy suffered hugely from the overall team inability. They're the huge PK minute eaters. I don't think that anyone thinks they're not competent...but it's worth watching their minutes, as they both lead the F and D corps in overall TOI too, so if they need some more rest...get them rest. Can also be achieved by reducing PP time. My first thought is Provy issimpoly not needed on PP2, he looks awkward out there and there are other players who can take his role leaving him to other roles...time to grow up and understand Ivan cannot do everything, and doesn't even need to.

4) PK dee rotation is simply whomever is available, minus Ghost and so far Sanheim a bit. Nothing wrong with either of them getting time to see how it works out, need to limit Ghost's time as he already eats many minutes...but reducing PP goals against by even 5 goals is probably worth 2.5 points in the standings, and well worth a lot more experimenting. Hagg better be better again...he'll be out there a lot

What are Taylor Leier’s chances on making the Flyers roster this season.
If Leier is waived does he make it through back to AHL or does another team place a claim.

leier and laughton were thought to be a our top pk pair going into the season because of their chemistry, but they never lived up to the previous hype. Leier has a direct path to the nhl and its by being this team's best pk forward but he needs to show he is capable of that role.

Giroux coots konecny
Lindblom patrick Voracek
Jvr Voroboyev simmer
Leier Laughton NAK

this would be my ideal lineup with leier in the lineup. Notice we would also be eating the contracts of weise, lehtera, and weal which is highly unlikely.
