Everyone looked at the roster they assembled from that expansion draft and was sure the team would be a joke.
Right but I'm saying that was the lens of expansion, not the reality of the personnel. Plus also, everyone thought MAF was done and that was well wrong.

And I'm not saying it was evident that they'd be as good as they were/are, but that roster was always easily a bubble team.

As for folks thinking Vegas was gonna suck last year, that was purely about people's idea of expansion teams. That roster was never a bottom feeder.

Yeah, I obviously didn't think they would get to the Final, and cut through the playoffs like a hot knife through butter to get there, but I never thought they would stink either.

As soon as the Pens worked out that little scam deal for Fleury and the Panthers bent over, I could see it they would be ok.

I also distinctly remember both Frank Sevarelli and Pierre McGuire saying they could make the playoffs as a wild card team on a morning radio season preview show.

Lol. Crosby got schooled on the OT goal.

Selke level defence, he has not.

Well in his defense, he tried the very same "stuck in cement, swing your stick like a turnstile" move on the game tying goal as well, so he must have thought it would work the second time.

Seriously, he was completely flat footed on both goals.

That's not true at all. They picked up some good talent in the draft.
I didnt vexpect them to get to the finals in their first season but I wasnt surprised at all that they made the playoffs.

Didn't think Vegas could get in the playoffs and based that opinion on what their defense looked like at the time. Lets face it - that defense looked like a joke with Nate Schmidt, yesterdays scratch on this Caps team, being the guy. It still doesn't impress me at all, it should bite them in the ass this year too. They had succesfully utilized their physical advantage over the most of opponents last year, built a good transition game and MAF was standing on his head at the most critical time of the year. Had he played at his usual average playoff level, they would have been done in the 2nd rd with San Jose.

10 games left in the season, and who we play in the 1st round is so up in the air. We could realistically play anyone in the Metro + maybe Montreal. Penguins (as of now), Islanders, Hurricanes, Blue Jackets, Canadiens, and possibly (small chance) Flyers.

Who do you guys want to match up with?

If I had to choose probably Montreal. Just don’t have anything that scares me but a goalie who isn’t what he was. CBJ doesn’t really scare me either but on paper they could be dangerous.

Anyone but the Pens, only because I want them in the 2nd round when we've built up some more mojo, just like last year. Pens and TB are the only teams that scare me in the Poffs. Realistically we could very well see a same exact Caps bracket as last year.

I really want Ovie to win the Rocket and get 50 goals, who they play in the playoffs matters a lot less to me. :dunno:

Spent way too many seasons worrying about that to think it matters anymore.

not that we see them often... but I don't want the easy matchups. Although there doesn't seem to be any in the east this year.

Canes will be a tough out. Lots of home cooking there and first time in forever.

C-Bus is due to break thru.

Islanders would make the most sense with the Trotz v Caps theme, but least likely.

Pens in Rd1? That’s just not part of the cosmos anymore, is it?

Habs? Sure — trash that one 9yr old demon?

Flyers? We have crushed them recently. Their G’s are not good, and neither is their D.

So— I’m rooting for the Trotzlanders to sink.

They realistically should handle anyone out of Pittsburgh and Tampa and those match-ups would be toss-ups. None of the other teams in the playoffs match the Caps combination of depth across both the forward lines and defensive pairings, star-power, and goaltending. A speedy team like Carolina could give them trouble if the Hurricanes get lights-out play from Mrazek who has stoned the Caps a few times in his career. Columbus, New York, Montreal... meh.

At the end of the day, it doesn't really matter to me. Caps have to beat the best to be the best. But I wouldn't mind the standings just as they are now, more or less. Let Tampa and the Isles contend with Carolina and Columbus in whatever configuration the WC ends up at. Caps get the Pens, possibly without Malkin, right out of the gate and if they clear that hurdle, they have a pretty well tenderized NYI, CBJ, or Carolina in round 2.

I'd like Carolina. They have only one player who legit scares me. Otherwise, it's a speedy but pretty average team. Habs are rather similar to Canes but despite not having gamebreaking skaters they have a legit goalie and that to me might be even bigger concern. Carolina doesn't have one until proven otherwise. Cbus, lose or not, is going to hit the shit out of the Caps if they meet again. Sure as hell woudn't want the boys to be already beaten up once 2nd rd starts. Isles are just boring by all means, I don't want to watch the 'the one who scores 2 goals wins the game' bullshit in the playoffs.
