Just watched Bolts-Yotes. Much like the game against the Caps on Saturday it was a close, hard-fought game that ended up.loooing like a rout because of multiple empty-net goals. All due credit to Tampa for finding ways to win in close games, but I wonder if in fact they've played many more close ones than their final scores and goal differential would suggest.

I thought it was decided they were ultimately, simply run of the mill Floridians.

I tried to find that mind blowing rationale in a post made about a year ago, but I cannot find it.

I do however, understand the charm in referring to them as Tampanians.

Don't care how good their team is or that they just won the Presidents Cup, when I think of the TB Lightning and their fans, I can never get past this moment.

or their clown radio announcer Dave Mishkin

Silly strings and horn man, just about sums up the Tampa Bay Lightning fan base!

Tampa is like if Ocean City and Virginia Beach had a sun poisoned baby.

White Oakley's, cargo shorts, cut-off shirts, permanent sun burn, and regrettable tattoos for as far as the eye can see.
Random lit quote:
As Tiny Ewell comes to see it, people with tattoos fall under two broad headings. First there are the younger scrofulous boneheaded black-T-shirt-and-spiked-bracelet types who do not have the sense to regret the impulsive permanency of their tatts, and will show them off to you with the same fake-quiet pride with which someone more of Ewell's own social stratum would show off their collection of Dynastic crockery or fine Sauvignon. Then there are the more numerous (and older) second types, who'll show you their tattoos with the sort of stoic regret (albeit tinged with a bit of self-conscious pride about the stoicism) that a Purple-Hearted veteran displays toward his old wounds' scars.

Tampa fan coming in peace. After clinching the President's trophy earlier than usual last night, there's two lessons to learn from you guys in this regard:

1. The obvious one, that regular season success doesn't always translate to the playoffs. Though we know this from ourselves too, since we've made 3 of the last 4 ECF plus a SCF in that span.

2. The second, and often ignored one, is don't give up, even when falling short all those years. I give you guys credit for not giving up in spite of years of postseason frustration, even though others would've. You kept fighting, and finally won it all last season.

Just some thoughts of mine now that the team with the most pressure to win a cup right now was transferred from the Caps to the Bolts last June.

Given the 52 year gap, the I think the boys in TO could challenge your bolded statement. But imo it's close.

Talking about strictly this year, Tampa is definitely under the most pressure to win the Cup. In general it's Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver because they're Canadian teams, but the fact that Tampa has is in Florida yet still is under so much pressure says a lot.

Maybe we need a new advanced stat to measure this. Call it adjusted team pressure per year (Adj. TP/365)

The thing that sucks about being so good is it's hard to enjoy the journey. When you're as good as Tampa is this year it's Cup-or-bust which makes every goal against and every loss in the playoffs excruciating, almost to the point where the games stop becoming enjoyable because you feel like you're going to throw up the whole time (or at least I did). What made last year so amazing was the journey it took this team to get there. Some fans waited 40 years, some 20, some 5, but all suffered through some serious heartache in order to savor that moment. And me personally, I wanted the Caps to win but more than anything I wanted the Caps to win while Ovechkin was still in DC. He's done so much for the city that I genuinely wanted him to be rewarded and it was everything I had hoped it would be seeing it happen.

The Caps caught fire last year and finally caught some breaks. Playoff hockey is about luck. There are probably 20 "ifs" I could list off the top of my head that happened last year that if they don't go the Caps way the Caps probably don't win the cup. As good as Tampa is they have a 1-in-5 chance at winning which ain't great odds.

All this is to say: enjoy the journey. It's special to be a fan of a team like the Caps or the Lightning. Many teams will never experience the level of success these teams have accomplished. And success is not always linear; some times you have to take a few steps back or sideways to move forward. Maybe that's what happened to Tampa last year and this is their year. I'm hoping obviously for a repeat but I firmly believe the Caps, Pens, or Bolts will be hoisting the Cup this year -- good luck!

This is the greatest lesson

You pin losses or failures on your best players it helps nobody.
