Fun with stats time.

NHL goals scored last year currently on the roster:

SJ forwards - 186
SJ defense - 48
SJ total - 234

LA forwards - 176
LA defense -40
LA total - 216

Thornton missed 43% the season. Carter missed 67% of the season. The Kings total does not include Kovalchuk, obviously.

LA better seriously revisit the possibility of adding Voynov and trading a Muzzin/Martinez for some help on the wing; this is the only option for LA for it to be considered as a potential contender

Otherwise **warning - sensitive posters beware - negative comment ahead** LA has a 3rd spot to look forward to? A battle for that 3rd spot and a nice 1st rd playoff matchup vs either SJ or VGK orrrr if we're lucking enough a wild card and a chance to exit the Pacific matchups

Where's the space coming from to get Voynov and anyone that could possibly score at any consistent rate? Anyone handing out a 20-25 goal scorer that costs $1m? Unless Voynov will be that cheap. Trade M or M for a winger, fine, but Voynov probably won't fill the spot because of the cap.

They have almost $21m in their top 4 wingers. That's going to be more than most teams, if not all other teams. They need some efficient production for the money. Kovalchuk has to not be old, Brown has to play(not necessarily score 28 goals) the way he did last year, and Toffoli and Pearson have to bring something more to the table. They have to get production from those 4.

It's a tough division. So what? Go out in the 1st or 2nd, what's the difference with this team? As long as this old core is here, and they're not going anywhere, it doesn't matter when they lose in the playoffs. It is Cup or nothing. If they somehow actually win the division, and get to the 2nd round, they have a tough matchup. If they lose, nobody will say well at least they got to the 2nd. Except Robitaille when he's trying to get people to buy tickets.

1st, 3rd, wildcard, none of it matters. When they lose, doesn't matter. Cup, or failure, that's it.

So then this should definitely be our last go with this core, after this season once we get nowhere, we gotta blow it up; this roster is wrong for the Pacific, from the bottom up - all wrong

Voynov is not a Karlsson. We're not winning that particular arms race.

yes? i know? why do people keep putting shit in my mouth
i didn't say LA should be competing with Karlsson

i'm saying with teams improving, LA needs to improve its roster too? does this merit some grilling? grill me in June though ok?

Blowing it up isn't easy. There's no expiring contracts. Should Brown go back under 20 goals, nobody is taking him. If he scores 28 again, nobody will trust him to do it yet again. If Kovalchuk is old, nobody is taking that contract either. As great as Kopitar is, it's not easy to fit a $10m cap hit for a 30+ year old anywhere. Could trade all the 70's guys, but might be selling low. Doughty signed a monster deal. Nobody really needs a 33 year old $6m goalie for the next 4 years.

More likely than not, they are riding out the Cup core no matter what happens. Blowing it up means, to me anyway, getting rid of the core of the core. M&M could be dealt. I'm guessing Doughty could still go for something good if it got to that point, but he re-signed without much issue. Seems like he's bought into the future. Most of them have the NMC or NTC. In terms of really starting over, no. The contracts are too big and/or too long, and the players are too old. I'd guess it's very doubtful things get truly blown up. That's not how the cap works. There's the mess in Ottawa, but few teams are in that situation.

Imo, as the division and league stood two weeks ago a few things had to go right for the Kings to be considered playoff threats.

1. Kovalchuck contributes.
2. Vilardi contributes
3. Toffoli and Pearson regress back to being offensive threats.
4. Our older players don't excessively dip in performance.

But now before the season starts, with Vegas getting Patches, SJ getting Karlsson, and us essentially losing Vilardi, it's not looking good even before the puck drops imo. Realistically with how old Kovalchuck is, this year was the real year to get mileage out of him. But with the best teams in our division (teams which we also play poorly against) ramping up hardcore, it's hard to imagine that our team even on paper can stack against them.

I like our team projecting in to the future right now, but the Kovalchuck signing really was a balls to the wall move. If it doesn't translate into a cup this year, it's hard to believe he'll keep the same performance afterwards.

I hope our players are motivated to actually give it their all this season and move forward, because a surprise from Toffoli, Pearson, Kempe, and Iafallo is what'll take for this year not to be another mediocre outing.

Starting to lose all excitement over Vilardi and with San Jose and Vegas improving like they did I don’t care what anyone says Stastny and Pac are a big upgrade over Neal and Perron and Sharks got Kane for full year and Karlsson , Calgary got tremendously better , Arizona on the upswing idk Kings got a big mountain to climb now

ya but on the plus side, are you fully aware how much money Doughty saved by not having an agent to negotiate a contract and still come out of there with $11m?

I guess it depends on what type of fan you are. Not whether or not you're a good fan, just what type. I'm always partial to the year to year ride. The ups and the downs. For me, nothing has to be set in stone in September. A team will evolve over the course of 82 games, whichever way they go.

Tremendously?

last night i had a dream that there was a trade involving Forbort for Radulov.
Dreams can count as rumors, right? I don't remember if I was at Taco Bell in this dream.
