Still my most hated Kings trade ever.

mine remains Dan Cloutier

i hated that goalie in NY and i felt that such an unappealing goalie fitted perfectly w/ the Canucks, made me love to hate them, then i became sick when we traded for him

Canucks
Traded Dan Cloutier to Kings for 2007 second round pick (#33-Taylor Ellington), future considerations (2009 conditional third round pick *(#66-Brayden McNabb)) on 2006-07-05

*interesting!

I am not too worried about what other teams do, because I still don't think this year is on the Kings radar as a true contender. I think they are shooting for a mini-window starting next year until Kovy's contract is up. The core will be a few years older but still contributing, ideally with Kempe blossoming and Vilardi/JAD providing cheap support. If things go as planned, it wouldn't surprise me to see Blake try an all-in type move a couple seasons from now. After that run at the cup is over, then you recoup what you can for the core and aim for 2025.

Is there a 2018 version of this dman around for the Kings to add to the blueline?

Should’ve never traded Zhitnik. Dumbass McMaster...

In a matter of a few years the Kings lost Larry Robinson (retired summer before the Cup run-would have been a great story line against Montreal), Paul Coffey, Marty McSorley, Alex Zhitnik and Darryl Sydor. The Coffey trade still makes no sense. The consensus is Gretzky was pulling the strings, why would he trade one of his boys for another center? And Coffey went on to play many years later putting up points until the end.

The bigger thing there is Taylor Ellington. Just because you trade a 2nd round pick, doesn't automatically mean anything. At least Cloutier played in the NHL. You can get Ellington, or, 10 picks later, get Subban. Or, have 16 defensemen taken around the league before Subban. Including Hickey, Alzner, and Ellerby in the top 10. Including 3 that never played an NHL game, and a couple more than have barely played any.

what pissed me off about that trade was that he was signed to an extension before playing a friggin game

Gretzky had nothing to do with the Coffey trade. In fact, he was quite upset about it when he found out. If I remember correctly, it was Beverley and Melrose who were behind that one.

Would you guys move Toffoli for Duchene straight up...without a duchene extension attached. Not saying he wouldn’t resign, but wouldn’t sign along with the trade. Remember Toffoli only has 2 years left on his deal.

Probably. It'd be hard to fit Duchene's extension (probably around the $7 million mark) but he's a far better offensive player than Toffoli right now. He's actually only a year older than Toffoli too. Plus he provides center depth in case either of the big 2 go down with an injury.

I don't like Duchene. Like, at all. He's a guy to me whose play looks dynamic but is actually ineffective. Like Toffoli for Duchene straight up I'd have to do but I wouldn't like it haha.

If I recall he has pretty good FO% so would help with possession rates.
I like him because it would give flexability and he is a faster player.

Yes, but would Melnyk? He's paying Duchene $6.5m, but Toffoli is owed $9.4m. He could always trade Toffoli, but, Duchene is the bigger name and might bring more back.

Given the Kings cap situation, we would not be able to fit in an extended Duchene for Toffoli without trading someone else for futures as well. That's in addition to the one mid level contract already going out due to having to sign RFAs Kempe, Brickley, Rempal, and Iafallo.

The annual cap increase, Greene's buyout money coming off and Thompson expiring is already allocated to Doughty's extension but those still may not be enough.

Getting Duchene would improve one spot but open a hole that would need to be filled somewhere else. The joys of the cap world.

It'll never happen because yeah, he should be able to get more for Duchene for Toffoli (although I'm not so sure now after the Eriksson trade) but I'd do it. Duchene isn't the perfect player, he plays for himself, but he's a lot better offensively than Toffoli. Great speed. More versatile. A lot worse defensively though. Is it worth paying him $7 million (extension) over Toffoli's $5-6 million (extension)? Yeah, probably.

So obviously with Forbort hurt to start camp Brickley will stay up and then get sent down when Forbort is healthy.

Doughty-Brickley
Muzzin-LaDue
Martinez-Phaneuf
MacDermid

I don't think they brought in Brickley to make him stay down. They might keep him in 7th rotation.

Panarin is the only player rumored to be available that I would give up roster players and futures to get. A package of Muzzin, Tofolli and Vilardi would be hard to beat by any other GM for a Columbus team looking to make their first deep playoff run in franchise history.

would that be for a signed panarin?

I would do Martinez or Muzzin and Toffoli for Panarin.
