When the Kings were winning other teams followed them. They set the trend.

Now the Kings are following other teams buying into the "speed" trend.

Seems like a balance of both worked out well for the Caps. Look at the list of teams that won Cups in the post-cap era, Carolina, Anaheim, Detroit, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Boston, Los Angeles, Chicago, Los Angeles, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, Washington.

I don't know if I spot a trend there other than the fact that these teams were deep and had role players step up and contribute.

All deep teams that were able to roll four lines consistently.

That's what I mean though. It doesn't matter if you're fast or not. It just matters if you're good.

There's a trend in hockey philosophy/thinking that the game has changed and it's all about speed now. Seems like the Kings are buying into this stupid mentality.

That when things went wrong. Lombardi was so focused on that 3rd cup, he lost sight of what got him there. The league was heading in a new direction , one that he never or was unwilling to see. Getting smoke by SJ in 2016 should've been a wake up call, instead he dismissed it as a trend and then signed past their prime, slow ineffective players. Everyone single one got waived.

I don't know if this is new, but I saw Friedman say on NHL Network say that after signing IK the Kings took themselves off the table for Tavares, but now they're reconsidering making a pitch.

Saw that too. Wouldn't hurt to listen and see what he wants.

Friedman:

-Panarin has let it be known that his preferred destinations are LA, NY and Florida.

-Kings still considering pitching to Tavares even after signing IK.

-Even though LA added IK, they were still interested in Paciorietty and the deal would had gone through if not for Pacioreitty's unhappiness with the extension. MP likely wanted to go to LA but LA probably can't afford the extension he wants.

I don’t know how true all of this news is if is. But, I appreciate Blake exploring all options. He understands this team needs to be better and he’s going to try his hardest to make sure it is.

I don’t want to say it’s not a knock against Dean, because it’s amazing he got us two cups.. though it’s one thing to win, but it’s another thing to keep winnng that I’m sure is the most challenging.

I honestly did not believe the rumors about LA being one of the places Panarin wanted to go to. But Freidman saying it adds some validity.

It's so odd that LA now seems like a place big name players actually want to come to. I guess winning a few cups and having some world class players (Kopitar, Doughty, Quick) will do that for you. It gives you a prestige factor I suppose.

I'd say it is a multitude of issues that hampered the Kings, from players falling off a cliff and not being able to perform at a high level anymore (Richards, Stoll, Greene, King), players moving on (Williams, Mitchell, Regehr), the Voynov situation, Gaborik seemingly always hurt, and their rentals walking away. Add all of that up and you have a steep drop in team depth, and that happened at all positions.

As damacles already mentioned, just look at the ice time distribution and heavy reliance on the top guys and barely even playing the bottom six/bottom pairing players.

It was evident by their on ice performance the Kings weren't very good at moving the puck nor were they very good at possession the puck, getting out of their zone, generating offense, or keeping up with the pace of play during their last two playoff appearances. This team is not as physical as it once was, and adding more physical players without addressing the need for more offense and more skill would be quite the miscalculated move.

I don't think revisiting players like Dwight King or Jordan Nolan would put this team back on the right path.

Nothing to lose by checking in with Brisson and Tavares. 2 contracts would need to go and another next summer due to all the RFAs.

Almost certainly 3 from Brown, Carter, Toffoli, Phaneuf, Muzzin, and Martinez.

I mean, they're already in LA, plus the Brisson connection. It would be stupid to not at least pick up the phone to say you did.

My thinking with this is we really don’t need Toffoli or Pearson...
disagree all you want but Vilardi is starting on Carter’s RW so TT would be moved down. Pearson at $3.5 is too expensive for a 3rd liner...
Kovalchuk-Kopitar-Brown
Panarin-Carter-Vilardi
Iafallo-Kempe-Amadio

I really like the potential of that 3rd line

Not playing for Sutter may have a thing to do with it too.:D
