I’ve heard the same thing after checking in — there doesn’t appear to be any alarm as it relates to Vilardi and his readiness for the upcoming season, where he’ll be given every opportunity to contend for a roster spot as a 19-year-old. In person, Vilardi looked terrifically fit at development camp and gave off the impression that he’s been putting the past year’s commitment to training to good use. In the off-season, it’s always preferable that players are focused more on adding strength than rehabilitating an injury; it doesn’t appear such a balance has been off-set. I haven’t sensed any sort of grave concern with this issue.

Where? Bantam? He hasn't played a full season of Juniors.

I agree that it's not much of anything to worry about, but when you haven't played a full season of juniors, and issues pop up, it's gonna get scrutinized.

Many players don't play a full season in Junior. And Vilardi played 62/68 games as a rookie.

Plus, it's not like the same injury recurring.

GM Rob Blake sends me texts all the time too.

Yesterday, in fact, he said "Stop ****ing texting me pictures of your rock collection!!!! How did you get this number???? I'm contacting the police!!!"

Really love how engaging he is with fans.

I had to read that twice to get it right, i thought you were sending different pictures first time around.

Re Villardi, just growing pains i reckon, the dudes gonna be a monster

That 2005 draft will be looked upon as a franchise setting draft (and a minor miracle). The other being 2008 with the selection of Doughty, but that was more of a no-brainer at #2 than the Kopitar and Quick selections.

I thought the Kings would go for Marc Staal in 2005, without even considering that Kopitar would drop to #11.

It's funny, Columbus nearly had Kopitar by default if Montreal had picked Gilbert Brule like many assumed they would. There's behind the scenes video of Columbus' scouts back in their hotel as the draft is unfolding. When Minnesota took Benoit Pouliot at #4, all the scouts started celebrating with one exclaiming "We got Brule or Kopitar!"

The Kings can thank Montreal for laying the foundation for having Kopitar fall to their laps.

Imagine how the future would have been different for the teams that ended up passing on Kopitar. I guess Montreal for the most part has gotten what they expected out of Carey Price, but pretty much every selection afterwards over Kopitar turned out to be huge misfires.

I think you could give Minnesota a thank you gift for going slightly off the board for Pouliot. From what I recall, Pouliot didn't put up huge numbers but was an intriguing combination of size and hypothetical skill.

I kinda disavowed hockey that year due to the lockout, so I didn't follow prospects as closely as other years. But I do remember the heated Crosby vs. Brule discussions. It was funny to see the western Canadian fans hype up Brule as if their league's reputation depended on it. I remember an injured Crosby opted to skip the top prospect's game that year which was in Vancouver. Brule starred in the game with a hat trick and suddenly some overzealous posters were claiming Crosby was scared since he knew he was going to get upstaged.

Interesting to think if anything would have changed if Anaheim had taken Jack Johnson at #2 like many (including myself) assumed. Carolina allegedly was going to reach for Marc Staal at #3, but they changed their plans when Anaheim took Bobby Ryan.

If I ever got a few minutes to talk to a scout/GM, I'd probably ask about how the dynamics around the 2005 Draft might have been different than typical years. Nobody knew the draft order until a week before the draft. I can only imagine how that would mess up your prep if you don't know if you're picking 5th or 25th. And typically teams might know the ballpark area of the draft where they'd be picking in the 1st round, so they might focus on a handful of guys in the final months. But maybe teams had to cast a wider net and thus watched more total prospects but at a cost of not watching enough of individual guys.

I wish I remembered the user, but someone said Brule was a tougher version of Crosby and had higher upside.

True and we also got Voynov in 2008 too, but it was Lombardi who put in a development program that never existed that really made both those guys who they are. Quick would not be the same guy he is today under Taylor and it's really downright shocking to think that they never had one to begin with. Today, we may have the best goalie system in the league.

Kopi's offensive numbers would be way better if he played in a more open system or had ever skated with a truly elite winger.

And yes it's truly scary to think how easily Kopitar could have been a Duck, Canuck, Shark or Hawk. Had he ended up in Vancouver or San Jose there is almost no chance that team doesn't not win atleast one cup and likely more.
