Canada's defence is fine for now, but it needs a top pairing anchor. The group last year was not star studded but was very effective defensively. That group had a bit more of a defensive makeup though, and it was supported by an elite group of defensive forwards. This group looks a bit more offensive. A lot will depend on the system as well.

I guess it is too much to ask for, for either Vlasic/Burns or Gio/Hamilton to agree. We do need an experienced Big minutes guy. Looks like Calgary is going to bow out rather quickly here, so 2 defenders + Monahan would be a good get. My preference would be for SJ to move on and McDavid to play in Paris.

Chicago going out gets us nothing really. I doubt Towes/Keith are interested in a Paris adventure at this point in their careers.

Chicago is far from over, but it would be great if Keith decided to go - he did so in 2012, so maybe there is a little chance. I'm not sure about Toews. McDavid would certainly be an option, but Edmonton looks to be able to advance, so we'll see. I must say that I really like the way Edmonton plays and I would be quite happy for them. Calgary will be out after the 1st round imo. Monahan and Hamilton could realistically go, maybe even Brodie or Giordano in the better case. Toronto should still realistically hand out Rielly, Marner, and Kadri. I also think that we will get one of Marchand/Stone.

I would want Rielly and Hamilton; and Marner, Stone, Kadri, and McDavid if he's out.

Duchene - McDavid - Scheifele
O'Reilly - Giroux - Simmonds
Monahan - Kadri - Stone
Skinner - MacKinnon - Marner
Point

Rielly - Hamilton
De Haan - Barrie
Matheson - Demers
Morrissey

That would be great.

I'd rather not pair those 2 up as #1 and 2. I'd rather Hamilton come with Gio or not at all.

Why no Horvat!

Good question (or exclamation I suppose). Unless he refused, I would guess that Hockey Canada thinks that it can get a bigger fish. It is disappointing to me, as Horvat is exactly the kind of player I want to see at this tournament. Good young player after a strong season.

Vlasic and Burns would be ideal, but that's tough, especially after the particularly short summer they had last year. Giordano and Hamilton would be good, but both refused last year when healthy, making me skeptical. Keith would be great but he is getting pretty old. He is the only one from Chicago to step up in 2012 though, so maybe. I recall that he has been going through custody issues with a young son though, so it may not be ideal to go on a vacation like that.

Not sure about that. There is a good chance that he was invited in 2012 or 2014.

That would be great.

That is probably the best case scenario. Would be a worthwhile team.

Not sure if he was going to be invited or not but it sounds like he's sitting out until a contract is in place. His camp is probably looking at signing a long term deal this summer and doesn't want to risk injury.

I was disappointed when I didn't initially see him but that sounds reasonable. Canucks aren't going to be good for a while so he'll have plenty of other chances to wear the team Canada jersey at this tournament.

He said in one article a week ago or so that he wasn't being contacted by HC yet, and that he wouldn't want to risk until he has new contract anyway, but then, he would like to go.

Minnesota looks like it's done. Spurgeon and Scandella are appropriate defencemen for this level, but they aren't ideal top pairing candidates. I am hoping for no Dumba again. It will be interesting to see what Hockey Canada does after this round. If Nashville advances and they can't get a number one from Calgary, I wonder if they will wait for the conclusion of round two again. Last year Hockey Canada waited for round two to conclude and then brought over Ellis, which ended up being a critical decision. I wouldn't mind them gambling and attempting that again (Ellis or Subban) if no top pairing locks come out of round 1.

Crawford would be fine, he's a pretty good goalie. Dubnyk though, he scares me, I have never been sold on that guy.

I think he has been to this thing a couple of times though if my memory serves me correct, he's been a good soldier so I hate to say what I said about him.

Spurgeon could be depending on who he is paired with. If it's Keith, then it's getty up. Scandella no. They'd be a decent 2nd. pairing, but we already have De Hann, so, at this point I'd take Spurgeon and Dumba. For some reason I think De Hann and Dumba would be a great pair. not sure as to why I think that. just a hunch.

now back to my morning coffee and try to get into the swing of things. late night.

I am hoping for no Dumba. The team survived him last year and got some use out of his big slapshot, but the Dumba experience is not one I am interested in. Keith would be a good get of course, though I'm not expecting him, but I wouldn't want him paired with Spurgeon. This group is a bit light on defensive play.

A guy I wouldn't be against, assuming that the biggest guys say no, is David Savard. I thought that he was quite good in 2015.

ya, you're right about Savard. I forgot about him. He played well in Prague. was overshadowed by the performance of Burns.

I don't believe Chicago is done. Neither do I think Columbus is done against Pittsburgh. Calgary is. Edmonton seems at least very capable of eliminating the Sharks, but I would still wait. I think Edmonton is going to advance though. Toronto-Washington will be close to the end imo, I would guess 6 games at least. Minnesota can be eliminated the next game, even though I am sad to see it. I thought that this was the year they could make the WCF. Parise, E.Staal, Suter, good seasons from players like Koivu, Granlund, Spurgeon, Dubnyk....hopefully, for them, they will be good next year again, but still. NYR-MTL I think will be also a close series with 6-7 games, not sure who wins; the same goes for BOS-OTT.
