Great team so far. Gold favorites atm.

Don't know if these are your numbered lines but scheifele should be on 1st. He has 65 points 5on5 to giroix 26 and Mackinnons 37.

Canada will once again have easily the best team of the tournament. If they come to play and are motivated no ones stopping them, especially since all the other teams look as weak as a noodle.

Didn't Sweden make some significant additions today? And the Americans are off to a good start. So, I wouldn't quite say it's a slam dunk for Canada just yet. If McDavid becomes available and agrees to go, then perhaps.

but being properly motivated at this tournament is key.

Calvin de Haan? Don't know what to think about him. Probably solid top 4 dman who is comparable to Jason Demers? That would mean, there are only 2 open spots on defense.

Matheson
Barrie
Demers

Top 4. a left handed version of J. Demers, perhaps slightly better. I'd pair him with Barrie on the 2nd. pairing and hope we can land a true #1 and 2 once the 1st. rd. is in the books.

Honestly our D looks pretty darn good so far. If we can win with last years guys we can certainly win with the group this year. All pretty steady and mobile.

De Haan is a good enough hand. Not what Canada is looking for on the top pairing, but good enough to contribute on the second or third pairings at this level. I was expecting a few weeks back that he would get an invitation, can't really complain.

this is last years D

Cody Ceci
Ryan Ellis
Michael Matheson
Chris Tanev
Ben Hutton
Matt Dumba
Ryan Murray
Morgan Rielly

is that so bad compared to this years?

Yeah, as of now, there are no indications that this years defense will be better than last years.

Ceci, Hutton, and Dumba are all pretty questionable, those are desperation grabs in my opinion. And I honestly think that Tanev is pretty overrated and isn't a possession based D-man.

Yeah, I don't get his rationale about last years group either, it was a decent defense with good talent, I think it tops what has been named so far.

Maybe he is not a possession based d-man but he is a shutdown guy and damn good at it, and he played well for us last year, he was pretty much our rock that way.

Wish we had him this year again.

Well, this year's defense could still end up being better. Depends on who comes from the playoffs. Getting Subban and Rielly would be huge.

Our D looks great. Three forwards from Carolina, maybe they can form a line with some chemistry?

Skinner was fantastic this year. Would be neat to see him with Tavares again if he goes. Good chemistry between those two.

Canada looking strong again.

Agreed. If the NHL reverses their stance and decides to go to the Olympics, Skinner is my dark horse to make the team. Brilliant skater (perfectly suited for international game) that can put the puck in the net with the best of them.

We may need to tone down our expectations for a player like Giroux this year though, had a tough season and was not at his best by all accounts.

I am assuming his health issues must be pretty much cleared up or I cannot see the flyers organization signing off on him going so that is good.

Still, happy he is there and hope he has his "A" game because when he does he is quite the player.

Really weird that Claude is going after being hurt all year but f it, I'm all for it. Really happy to see Simmonds get a shot with Canada again. He's one of the best power forwards in the NHL.

I thought I heard something about Drew Doughty playing? That would be huge.

If Doughty isn't on the official list announced by HC - as it appears right now that he isn't despite that one report - the one who made that up should fire himself from his twitter account. If you don't know something for sure, don't tweet it as if it's a clear thing.

On topic, I hope we could get Subban, who would have more or less the same impact. I think he would very likely go because of his past record:

2011 - eliminated in the 1st round. Was invited but declined due to "bumps and bruises". Also needs to be said that he wasn't THAT good yet.
2012 - available, he agreed to go and was on the team, but injured himself in pre-tournament game
2013 - Montreal eliminated in the 1st round, Subban flew immediately FOR ONE GAME (the group stage of the tournament was already over, and he still decided to go)
2014 - not available, Montreal advanced to the 3rd round
2015 - not available, Montreal advanced to the 2nd round
2016 - available, wanted to go, but was injured

I have no doubts that he will go if he's asked. The same goes for McDavid.

Which defense is currently better?

Canada: Morrissey, Matheson, Demers, Barrie, de Haan

USA: Trouba, Murphy, DeKeyser, Brickley, Hanifin

I mean... it is still likely Canada, but it is close and USA is shaping up to have pretty damn good team! Looking forward to it.

well, so far I still think this is looking to be a track meet between Canada and Sweden. I'd give the slight edge to Sweden with A+ D-man Hedman, but depending on who the final additions are, it could be a 3 horse race between the States, Sweden and Canada. If the Americans add Werenski - Jones along with Gardiner, then depending on who Canada adds, I'd have to say the Americans would vault into the lead.

That depends on how many min a game the US can play Trouba. He's the best on either team by a lot, but Canada has a couple guys that are under the radar good and even the weakest are pretty good. The US could Struggle when Trouba isn't on the ice.
