Is this the part where we bemoan missing out on Eric Staal when a bunch of teams skipped out on him because of his terrible performance over the last several years? Because I thought we were done auditing every non-Kings UFA signing from last season.

Edit: Looking back over last season's stuff, it seems like 1/3 of posters said 'no thanks' to Staal, while others wanted him provided he signed ultra cheap, like 1 year, 3 mil. So I guess that's at least better than some of the other retroactive wishes

Who didn't see a 32 year old Staal being back in the top 35 around the league in goals, and top 30 in points this year? It's not like he's Kopitar. Some guys just age well.

The Kings didn't have the cap space for a Staal, and even more so once the new Toffoli (and Pearson) deals kick in. Now they have to find ways to open up cap space, something the team has failed to do since Lombardi started with a clean slate.

Drove past T-Mobile Arena yesterday and convinced myself for a for minutes, almost in a premonition fashion, that we'll see Dustin Brown on all their marketing next season as the first captain in franchise history.

They sure as hell did Ziggy... they just decided to go for four scrubs....

I was hoping it'd be Gaborik. They've already signed that Russian. Ill be shocked if they don't land Kovalchuk. They want excitement, not meat and potatoes.

I think of the scrubs they signed, only two of them made the opening night roster. Well I guess Setoguchi did as well as Gaborik's replacement. I was thinking more of an issue being created in the following season when they needed cap space for new deals for Toffoli and Pearson.

I guess Thornton as an option could be looked upon as another Lecavalier like addition, where it's a low risk, high reward type of move. That is if he's not signed to an inflated contract for too many years.

Ideally, I'd like to see the Kings get tougher in the bottom six as well, though Kopitar could also use a winger who could open up some room for him (though it doesn't have to necessarily be a Lucic replacement).

Yeah, I think most people were (rightfully) gun shy of Staal.

He was a risk who panned out. Good on Minnesota.

Fun fact:

15-16 Staal - 13G, 39pts
15-16 Purcell - 14G, 43pts

Purcell and Sutter was not a combo that was gonna work. Again, it's a sign of a GM and head coach who are on 2 different pages, thus the poor results and both being dispatched. Ted put up 10-28-38 in 38 games for Ontario. In the end Lombardi was just too loyal to his most loyal of soldiers-Brown, Richards and Sutter and if all 3 were sent away before their expiration dates things would be much different right now.

I see your point, I think DL was expecting someone from Ontario to step up as well as Gabby and Purcell but both fell way short... One guy I'm curious to see under a new coach and with a fresh start is Brownie. I think he gets 15-18 goals this season without DS putting him in the an uncomfortable situation.. Those two absolutely hated each other and I think it affected the team whom seemed to side with their former captain and lets not forget about the infamous barricade locker room situation....
I for one also want us to get a guy that can slobberknock someone when opposing teams make runs at our best players instead of just standing there....

The Purcell signing was a little weird. It didn't work under Murray, and Lombardi even got rid of him for not all that much. I still think Lombardi was just re-setting the roster after the previous 2 seasons, and Purcell was a cheap spot filler for one year.

You are correct, sir! I've been thinking/saying the same thing for MONTHS!!!!

:yo:

PS: If Blake signs soon-to-be 38-year-old Joe Thornton & drafts Callan Foote 11th overall, I'll be rooting for Vegas for at least the duration of Blake's tenure as Kings GM. LoL, it won't be the first time I've taken a break from Kings fandom!

I don't see Kovy ending up there. I could see him in a place like Florida.

This offseason will be very interesting.

An interesting development on Monday, prior to Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final — following Gary Bettman’s state of the league address, deputy commissioner Bill Daly was asked about the possibility of former Kings d-man Slava Voynov returning to the NHL.

Voynov hasn’t played in L.A. since the ’14-15 campaign, when he was suspended indefinitely while facing domestic violence charges.

“If that was ever something that was proposed, we’re on record as saying that would require a proceeding before the commissioner,†Daly said, when asked about Voynov’s possible return.

When asked if Voynov had “served his time,†Daly offered the following:

“Ultimately that’s not my decision, that’ll be Gary’s decision.

“I don’t want to speculate either on what that might be. I’ve heard from time to time that he might have an interest in coming back to the National Hockey League, but that hasn’t advanced in any material way to this point.

“So let’s wait and see if it happens.â€

Muzzin/Doughty
Forbort/Voynov
Martinez/Ladue

One can dream.. Though that D would lack some toughness.

Where personally I have no problem with voynov coming back to the NHL. He served his time and hopefully learned that he can't do what he did. I don't really want him on our team. Get him back and trade him. Let him get a new start elsewhere. Think it would be better for all involved.

No news on Voynov, because he isn't coming back anytime soon, if at all.
