Thornton would absolutely give the PP a shot and his creativity would help some of our goal scorers go nuts imo. We HAVE shooters--TOffoli, Carter and Pearson/Kopitar as well for sure--but we don't have a ton of offensive creativity. He'd solve that if he were willing to sign, and even though he's aging, taking a lesser role is massive.

Haha, I don't know where he works. Don't know him really, but he said some pretty compelling stuff.

Apparently, (this is according to him), Thornton and Blake are friends from their time in SJ together. Both Thornton and Marleau want 3 year deals from SJ, but because the Sharks have a lot of players to resign in the following off seasons, they're only willing to give one of Thornton/Marleau a deal of that length. They're leaning towards Marleau because they think he's healthier / has more longevity.

On top of being friends with Blake, Thornton likes California, and likes being near the coast. He's big into deep sea fishing I was told.

I'd be ok with Thornton on a one year deal. And if he's willing to sign a one year deal then he'll probably just stay in San Jose unless he feels completely disrespected by that offer. I'd be ok with Marleau also on a one year deal. Guy scored nearly 30 goals last year and looked to still have blazing speed.

The draft choice could be enough, for instance, for Dallas to pry someone like Alexander Edler away from the Vancouver Canucks. Or maybe it’s enough for the Carolina Hurricanes to part ways with Justin Faulk, especially with a defense corps that already has Jaccob Slavin, Noah Hanifin, Ryan Murphy and a few up-and-comers on the way. How about targeting the New York Islanders, who have a logjam of their own, and trying to pry away Nick Leddy or Travis Hamonic? Maybe the Los Angeles Kings, in need of a shakeup, would consider shipping either Jake Muzzin or Alec Martinez to Dallas if the third-overall pick was coming the other way.
Not sure if its a good idea based on this being a weak draft

Hell no I'm not trading Muzzin or Martinez for the 3rd overall pick unless the Kings have a second deal lined up to trade the 3rd + 11th for Philadelphia's 2nd overall + their 2nd round pick (based on NFL's draft order value, the values match up absolutely perfectly although NFL has 1 extra team).

If they like Vilardi, Mittelstadt, Glass etc (I do, they are perfectly suitable 3rd picks, where this draft lacks is that McDavid/Eichel, Matthews/Laine Top 2, otherwise it's average), then it's a deal you can make because it gives you flexibility to add a player in free agency or maybe the 11th pick comes into play as a way to add more offense.

If all it took to get the 3rd overall pick was one of Muzzin/Martinez I would for sure do it.

I like Vilardi a lot.

I don't see Dallas doing that at all.

Nick Shore was a better point producer in the AHL. That should tell us all something.

The same Nick Shore who spent his whole life playing on smaller ice and was 21 as a rookie, while Kempe is still only 20?

Yes. Yes. I am certainly able to draw conclusions.

I've wanted Thornton a long time for our bottom six/third line and for our PP1 unit. Our bottom sixers go a long time without scoring and get stuck in droughts. I think Joe's passing would definitely spark them as wingers.

Maybe he has some Cheechoo magic with Jordan Nolan?

Take this with a very large grain of salt but I talked to someone, who claims to know someone that has "inside" info. He said that Blake is planning on freeing up some cap space and pursuing Joe Thornton in free agency.

Would have no problems with this at all. Have a 1-2 punch of Kopitar and Thornton and if he cools off you have Kopitar-Carter-Thornton. I think he's got a few years left and would have no problem giving him a 2 year deal.

It all seems believable given their history, too believable perhaps.

Martinez + 11 for 3 is a trade I'd make without hesitating, then draft a center or defenseman.

You're right, I'm sure Kempe will be a 20-goal scorer. Probably going to play on Thornton's wing, right?

Great tactic. Put words in my mouth to make your silly argument look stronger.

I said nothing about how Kempe will perform at the NHL level. He could very well flame out.

But comparing two very different situations to establish a baseline deserves to get called out.

Getting Thornton here on a 1 or 2 year (max) deal would be great but it ain't happening. Anything the Kings can afford will be matched by the Sharks since they don't seem to be re-building yet.

Thornton would have to back way off his rumored demands of 3 years 17 million to play for the Kings. You just cannot give out that type of deal to Joe for where he is in his career and his injury status. And in this day and age of free agency he will probably get that from some team other than LA.

The issue is that they have to resign Hertl, Vlasic, and Jones next off season, then Couture and Pavelski the following off season after that. So you can see why they're hesitant about giving a 3 year deal to both Thornton/Marleau. I was told they're willing to give one of them that term, and they're leaning towards Marleau.

If this is true, and another team offered a 3 year deal to JT, the Sharks likely wouldn't match.

Last season was our shot at addressing our 2C/3C position with Eric Staal. Being an UFA and signing with Minny for under $4 mill per

I'll pass on a 3 year deal to Thornton. He'll be 38 when next season starts coming off major knee surgeries.

But Lombardi wanted Lewis and Purcell at nearly $4 million instead.

True, but I don't see the kings offering a 3 year deal either unless its super cheap.

Is this the part where we bemoan missing out on Eric Staal when a bunch of teams skipped out on him because of his terrible performance over the last several years? Because I thought we were done auditing every non-Kings UFA signing from last season.

Edit: Looking back over last season's stuff, it seems like 1/3 of posters said 'no thanks' to Staal, while others wanted him provided he signed ultra cheap, like 1 year, 3 mil. So I guess that's at least better than some of the other retroactive wishes
