Article about cinderella teams. Kings got some love at 7 but no mention how they were the only 8th seeded team to beat the 1, 2, and 3 seeds in the same playoff year when no one else has beaten even the top two.

If the kings were a Cinderella teamin 2012, it's only because of their history. The were the best team in the NHL for months after the Sutter hire. IIRC they were one of the top scoring teams after that and had the least goals allowed in the league. Looking back, no other team had a chance against them that year.

I think Dylan McIlrath would be a good reclamation project. Could probably sign him for pretty cheap as well; would add some much needed toughness on our back-end.

Muzzin/Doughty
Forbort/Ladue
Martinez/McIlrath

Would any of you guys give up our first this year to get rid of Brown/Gaborik contract?

No.

Free up cap space to give marginal raises or overspend on a UFA? No thanks.

Kings need cost controlled young talent. Best way to achieve that is with first round picks.

If Vegas was willing to take on a 2nd rounder this year and an additional future 2nd rounder to take on Gaborik (via trade) and an expansion player of LA's choosing, I'd pull the trigger on that.

This! Trading the first is a win now move. But as you said, we could only replace Brown/Gabby with a UFA who we'll likely have to over pay for. And if we made a trade it cost another high end prospect which is exactly what we need. It seems like a lateral move to me. If not a step back.

Brown is still a useful player, he is simply overpaid.

Gaborik, can't stay on the ice, and does nothing, if he is not scoring goals.

That's a tough call. I am certain it would cost us our first rounder to get rid of Brown or Gaborik. I don't see Vegas taking these cap dumps for mere 2nd rounders. Although it is tempting to dump these bad contracts, the biggest question is who do we get in free agency with the opened up cap space? It looks more and more like Oshie will sign with Washington. Other than him, there is no game changer available. For this reason, I would keep our first and Gaborik and Brown.

The thing that sucks about using the first is that whoever we draft likely wont crack the roster for another 2-3 years, during which time our window will be closing.

Sure Brown is overpaid. Carter is underpaid. I see that as a wash.

I would only trade the pick if it clears cap space from Gaborik's contract to land us Tavares as an UFA. Then essentially it's a 1st and Gaborik for tavares.

I'd be nervous about the second pairing. That's Forbort who is a guy with one year experience, and a rookie. Ladue has 22 games played and that still meets the definition of rookie.

Thought this was like the perfect tweet in response to the Vegas 'dumps.' Also great for this forum to see 1. How many 'bad' contracts there are around the league and 2. How many teams are going to be disappointed Vegas isn't rushing to their rescue:

Thanks for finding this Dee. Also from the article:

Nothing wrong with this at all in my opinion. For the rank-and-file, non-"superstar" player the invocation of the escalator clause is a bad idea. Actually, a bad idea for any player who already has a contract.

Yeah, the NHL's biggest problem with money/salaries--even going back to the first lockout--isn't big money for big guys, it's inflated money for the middle class.

The window is closing already and not in a "Well, you're one day closer to dying every day" type of way. There is a better chance of this draft pick helping the team win a Cup in 2-3 years than the cap space trading Gabroik/Brown + a 1st would because there is nothing out there for this season that will put them in contention, outside of some gnarly moves from Blake.

Of course, I am prepared for anything this off-season. Management believes they have a team that can win now so maybe they deal the 1st for cap relief and then package D for some sort of big upgrade.

Still don't see any reason Vegas would take either Brown or Gaborik for a single pick. 1 or 2 years left on their contracts, sure. 4 and 5 though? Why?

I agree. I think it would take more. Plus they also wouldn't want to help out a division/geographic rival. If there is a similar deal from the other conference, I see them doing that before helping the kings out.

This is the way to go. Cost-controlled talent/replacements that can do the job will allow us to let go of overpaid, marginal players.

LTIR might make Gaborik more valuable actually (assuming he is placed on it which sounds like a possibility):)

I would get rid of Brown if Vegas would take him.

You could restock with some talent by simply having cap space and "helping out" other teams near the cap. Chicago certainly helped out a number of teams due to their cap issues.

Got the Doughty contract discussions to think about as well. They will start pretty soon.

As evidenced by the last few years, this is not a viable rationale to running a team when every dollar matters.

Gaborik is on Instagram claiming he's working out twice a day.
