Does Hartnell get along with Carter?

My thoughts exactly...granted that was a long time ago and Carter is now married and moved on but that seems to me like something that shouldn't be resurfaced. I'd be fine with adding Jumbo and letting the remainder of the kids play. Kempe should play in the N next year. With Joe around, he'd be a great leader for Kempe, Brods, etc.

As a backup plan to Jumbo, I'd look at Martin Hanzal if the price is right.

As far as D goes, depending on the situation, I'd bring Cody Franson in on a PTO if nobody signs him. He was on a garbage team last year and might be a good 13-16 minute guy here if paired with the right guy.

Joe is probably looking for a short 2-3 year deal below 6 million and a chance at the cup; Hanzal will probable be looking for a 5-6 year deal above 6 million (also always getting injured, BTW) and probably not looking for the stanley cup as the main goal in this year's free agency.

It's good to see the new coach acknowledging that there are certain expectations players will have live up to, and that doesn't exclude guys like Muzzin, Martinez, Lewis and Clifford.

Stevens, on aspects of organizational structure that coaches focus on in late June:
I can only speak for myself, but I made sure to meet with every player. Some of the players left town, so I traveled to meet with the players that weren’t here. I went to North Dakota, Minnesota, Ontario. I met with all the guys just to make sure we had a chance to have a good discussion of where we’re at moving forward, expectations. I think the most critical thing this time of the year is just their training and their program and the plan to get better, and I think this is a critical summer for us as a hockey team and for our players as individuals. We need our top guys to come in and lead the way. We need our guys that are established in the league like Muzz and Marty and Lewie and Cliffy and those guys to come in and really take a step for us, and we need an awful lot of young guys to get a whole lot better over the summer. I think we can do that. We’ve got guys that’ve gotten through the process of getting some experience, but to me, that’s the critical thing in terms of structure – following up with these guys, making sure they know where they stand, making sure they know what the expectations are, and then I don’t think we’ll take time off.

Sounding like Justin Williams prefers to stay in the East Coast. FYI, resides in New Jersey. Carolina, Philly, Tampa Bay and the Islanders are rumored to be the teams most interested in him.

Sharks offer marleau two years; thornton also has multi-year offer

The Sharks have increased the term of their offer from one year to two this week, according to TSN’s Pierre LeBrun. It has been widely reported, including here, that Marleau has been seeking a deal of at least three years. It's unclear whether he would be able to command a deal of that length on the open market.

Should Marleau sign with the Sharks, it makes the return of Joe Thornton more likely, as well. Thornton, also a pending unrestricted free agent, has been receiving interest from across the league but would prefer to stay in San Jose with his longtime teammate.

NBC Sports California has learned that the Sharks are willing to offer Thornton a multi-year deal, and, like Marleau, likely has a two-year offer on the table. Thornton has been seeking a three-year contract.

Sounds like they've upped their offer. If the Sharks are offering 2 years to Joe, then I think the only way the Kings land him is if they offer 3.

Feel like it's been three years the entire time if they are serious since SJ was always going to budge off of the 1 year offer.

I agree. It's also possible Joe's 3 year demand is just a bargaining tactic, and him & his agent could be using L.A. as a pawn to force SJ into giving a better offer.

Like I said before, it feels like we always get our hopes up for certain free agents but it never happens.

Oh GOD no.

Someone dig up that classic Nolan-Hartnell gif

Found it! "Hey ****head"

I think the Kings would have better luck landing Patrick Marleau. Thornton doesn't seem like a guy that wants to leave SJ for the highest bidder.

Don't want Jumbo Joe for 3 years. That last year is Doughty's first extension year.

If 3 years @ $4 million or less, then maybe...

Only way a three year deal should be offered, 3 years at 3.5-4 million.

Pay him like the Third line Center he would be.

I doubt the Kings would play Joe at the third C during the season.Make sense Joe be the 2nd C and move Carter to Kopi's wing. Then during the playoffs move Joe down to the third C.

Going to be interesting tomorrow. Oh boy is it going to be something if Blake is sitting here with a bag of cash tomorrow and nobody worth giving it too.

Again, my concern is that he overdoes it so the Kings aren't empty-handed coming out of free agency.

This is why it is better to build teams through the draft and trades. The free agent market is a crap shoot where the "winning" team often overpays and the asset acquired rarely is a significant contributor to a championship team.
