From my point of view many if not all of the values people have are arbitrary ones. That they live in societies where there are shared values doesn't always necessarily mean that those values aren't arbitrary either. In this case the medal didn't have any value for Lias so he treated it as worthless. To others--particularly in this case of our friends to the north it seems to have had more value than it did to Lias--I'm supposing because of its ties to Canada's national pastime and on another plane that Lias show good sportsmanship to their eyes and accept that his team lost. I'm okay with that and I'm okay with what Lias did. He's not really harmed anyone with his act--maybe hurt some feelings but no real harm. I could tell a Christian, Jew or a Moslem that I'm an atheist and they might get upset over that too. Well--what of it? Did I harm them? Nope. It's best not to live your life just to please others at the cost of being who you are or even who think you are. Individuals should be able to make up their own minds the things that have value to them.

Hey did you read any headlines about second place Georgia players handing back silver medals for losing in OT to Bama in the national championship? Now, Maybe they don't give medals or trophies for that because I'm sure someone would have given their's back, first crack at gold since the 80s and all.

There has definitely been some good old fashion hate for our rival to the north.

But there have also been some things written by Canadian posters that have made me want to run them over with a Zamboni or a Molson truck or a sled pulled by moose or whatever else you use for transportation up there.

I’ve never understood why being proud of a high finish like second place means that you are satisfied to leave it there. That’s my biggest complaint about the “not first then last” attitude.

I’m mentioning this because I’ve seen a lot of it in this thread. LA can do what he wants with the medal, however it’s seen, but the fact that he was so upset with the silver that he threw it away does not mean he’s any more driven than the guys who wanted to keep theirs or even than the American bronze finishers who wanted to keep theirs.

Cant really compare the silver medal to the bronze. The bronze is something you win.

The prize for qualifying to the gold medal game is the opportunity to win said gold medal. The silver medal is nothing more than to remind you that you are the 1st loser.
