Well millennials love their "loser trophies " so of course they will be offended that he threw his away.
Idk guys have been in Twitter, but the general impression I get is older people are the ones offended by this. Every king angry tweet calling Lias a coward and other insults is from some guy who looks to be in his 50s and prattling on about not respecting the game.

If anything I’ve seen most millennial saying that hockey culture is dumb in general so seeing someone buck that conformity trend and show his emotion like Lias did is a positive.

I have no issues with what a player does between the whistles. I loved that Messier threw an elbow or 100 during his career. He created room for himself. In fact one of my fondest memories was when he cross-checked Doug "Killer" Gilmour in the forehead right in front of the Debbies bench.

Snatched the heart right out of them.

What I do not recall ever hearing is how Messier dis-respected his opponent after a game that he lost fair and square.

I'm not sure how you can draw comparisons to in game action, and a post game decision that the kid had time to think about, process and still do. But that's me.

Would have been nice to see some of this kids "passion" (I chuckle when I read that this was a display of passion) during the game. Maybe score an ES goal? As it was, the Swedes out scored the Canadians while the Canadians were on the PP. So it's not like the un-disciplined play of the Swedes hurt them on the score board.

You know he led the Swedes with 6 goals in 7 games, right?

He was also hurt in the game against Russia, and played the rest of the tournament with said injury

Fair point. And he did have 5 shots on goal in the gold medal game as well.

I am absolutely rooting for this kid. He's NYR Property and for that reason alone I hope he exceeds all of our wildest expectations, but I just hope he shows up at Rangers cam next year a more mature individual. He's going to need it.

Niklas Andersson om kritiken mot Lias

Here is what his father said (Google Translate):

What do you think of the criticism that came against Lias after that with the silver medal cast?
- Yes, what do you say about it? He was there to win. Then maybe he did not have to put it that way, but that was his feeling just then. I think he quite well explained how much he would win in his way. Then I can not say I thought it was amazing to throw it up. He could have given it to someone besides maybe.
- I do not have a single medal up and I have no idea where my are. But I know how much he wanted this, like the captain and everything. There are many emotions you can not really understand when you do not know the whole story. But that's him, a guy who wants to win everything he does, both on and off the ice.

Thank you for proving my point. You don't care about dangerous things even AFTER you learn that people kill themselves from CTE. But God forbid Lias does something completely inconsequential because of some arbitrary standard of "class" and "respect" that you made up.

Hey are you guys still going at it?

Been a while since the board had a meaningful debate. Can't say I find this particular content or topic really engaging, but it's good to see a lot of you posting here again.

You're contributions in Rangerland have been missed.

I keep reading about this Middlestadt thing on the Ranger board. Not sure what's up with that either.

Mittelstadt is going to be good.

Lias is going to be good. He is a good prospect right now and he has a solid all around game and has already learned not to force things, make smart plays, take care of his own end, etc. but what excites me is that he is SO driven that I cannot see him busting because he won’t stop working and won’t stop improving. He will get stronger, he will get faster. If we need him to improve his skating he will work on his skating. If we need him to improve on faceoffs, he will work on that. If we need him to improve his shot, he will stay late taking hundreds of shots.

I think the key with Lias will be patience. Right now, Lias could probably already be an effective third line center. In his first NHL season or two that may be what he looks like. Not assuming he’s reached his ceiling at 21 will be the key. Personally, I see Mittelstadt as a sort of Patrick Kane comparable while I see Andersson as more of a Zetterberg comparable. However, I think it’s more likely that Mittelstadt impresses early with his skill set but maxes out short of that comparison while Lias takes longer to REALLY make his mark but blossoms into a Zetterberg level player by the time he is 25, because of that drive to keep improving.

I love the zetterberg comparison, to me that’s who I see in 3 years

The saltiness re: Andersson from Canadian fans should be bottled up and saved. Why bother using salt mines when their weird salty tears about what a guy who lost did can fill all the shakers the world over?

Lol, how does Lias ditching his loser's medal "disrespect his opponent"?

I don't know. I'm 60 years old now. When Lias tossed his medal into the stands I was more than cool with it. I'd rather my team and its players be really pissed off when they lose.
It's almost like lumping massive sums of people together based on their age isn't really a good way to characterize a population.

Crazy, I know.

Guys, let's use a timeout here for a second.

Yes, getting rid of a medal in such a public fashion would not have been my preferred route for the kid.

But let's not act like he flipped the bird to everyone, mooned the Canadians, and then did an exaggerated throwing motion while launching his medal into the balcony either.

I've seen far worse, done by far older players who should know better.

Bob Mackenzie just said on TSN 690 radio, that Lias was playing with a separated shoulder...

Not surprising.

Once again, we're finding some distraction to ignore the fact that this kid delivered on almost everything we would want to see from him.

He led, he scored, he made teammates better, he nearly won gold, he played hurt and showed a high compete level and desire to win.
