I've been feeling as though Mittelstadt is going to slip out of the top ten for a while now, and his combine showing solidified that for me. I think any teams that were considering him ahead of us will now take Glass instead.

I'm more interested in what he said at his interviews then what he did with pull-ups or curls. The physical part will follow if he has the mentality to do so. Getting professional training and nutrition at the NCAA level will turn the doughboy around if he has that mentality. That he can't do them now is less relevant to me then his ability to perform without high-end physical testing stats.

Ok fair enough, I misunderstood what you meant with the original statement and so apologies for that.

And yeah I agree that teams obviously have their own board which they'll have set before the draft. But I don't think it's impossible that teams will have players on their boards that the majority of other teams don't. To me, that's an 'off the board' pick. This is just debating the semantics over three words though, which is rather pointless.

No problem.

The Sabres may have been the only team with Glotov on their board... sure, those scenarios across the later rounds are probably abundant. But there was no team that was like, "Erik Karlsson, who is that???"

Yea... i've taken us down a rabbit hole... it happens ;)

I worry about the headspace of a top-five prospect who knows he's going into a physical evaluation with massive career implications, and doesn't put the work in prior to the combine to get his upper-body strength up to an acceptable level. To me, it's a character issue...elite athletes should want to achieve and succeed in all venues, the "win everything always" mentality.

It's entirely reasonable to speculate that he has some kind of an upper body injury that would affect his performance, but then, usually injured players state their injuries and don't participate in those drills.

I read a criticism of his performance from a former marine who said drill instructors see 18yo kids all the time who can't do any pullups when they get off the bus, and they have those boys whipped into good enough shape to bang out 5-6 of them within a week or so.

Oh definitely.

I do think teams trying to outsmart one another picking up players in certain rounds is one of the best parts of the draft. It's a shame we aren't able to see teams' draftboards after the event (unless we can and I'm oblivious to that?).

Except they definitely do. The interview with the New Jersey scout said as much. "and then some other team picks a guy and you're like, "Who's that? Where'd he come from?" "

His point is that there is no "league" board.

Teams go off the board compared to each other. Some team could have Suzuki as their #1 overall and think that a team picking Patrick first is "off the board".

Yeah I misunderstood. Addressed it above, but cheers for clarifying.

If I had the Number 1 pick in this draft I would be taking Gabriel Vilardi. Not as good as Patrick right now, but in 3 years I think he's significantly better.

NHL.com mock draft has Buffalo taking Glass. Thoughts?

I think he's going to be a stud in the NHL, and personally (just my opinion) has flashes of Scheifele in his game.

Who is going to actually make the pick decision for us? From my reading it's not the GM, they respect their director of amateur scouting and the scouts who work under him. But in the Sabres case that guy was fired. Has Botterill had the big meeting with the scouting staff yet where they put a ranked list of draft prospects together?

That NHL.com interview with New Jersey's head of amateur scouting was pretty illuminating, I am assuming it's more or less how all NHL teams operate. There's no gut off the cuff decisions at the draft by the GM. The Devils have a ranked master list of 100 players, bit of a surprise since over 200 players will be drafted. Each player is categorized/tagged i.e. offensive dman, two way forward, offensive forward - plus they have a 'special' category i guess for players that are kind of pet prospects.

So let's say 26 on your list is a defensive defenseman and 27 is a skilled forward and 28 is a special player, they will actually show up in our system as tied for 26, and then you have to make a decision on who you want to take.

If you listen to what he says, they have 100 players that they have ranked, having eliminated others for various reasons. They know how many players will be taken and that will include people they have already ruled out.

I love him. After the top 2 that we have no chance at he's second only to Makar on my list of guys I'd be geeked if they made it to 8. But I don't expect either will.

I think there's a fairly good chance that both of them will.

Yeah if Glass is there, I would be shocked.

Where did these "new jersey scout" quotes come from?

https://www.nhl.com/devils/news/ten...-of-amateur-scouting-paul-castron/c-289689520

"For example, Cody Glass (projected as a top-10 selection) had 94 points last year and there's nothing to him (6'2", 170). When he puts on 25 pounds, how much better can he be? He's got a lot of upside. So in his interview I asked him to compare himself to other players in the WHL, and what I really wanted to know is if he thought he was better than Nolan Patrick and he said, "Not today, but maybe in a few years I will be." That's what we need to keep in mind as we put this draft list together. We're not trying to decide who is the better player today, but who's going to be the better player in two, three, five years - once they've filled out physically and developed their skills a little bit more. It's hard."

If Buffalo does take a forward at #8 who are some of the Defenseman that you would like to see them take in the 2nd round?

I am not sure of my order yet but these guys should be around in the 2nd. I would be quite happy with Farrance and Brook in the 2nd round and then also take Marcus Phillips or Dylan Samberg in the 3rd round.

Josh Brook
Pierre-Olivier Joseph
Henri Jokiharju
Ian Mitchell
Dylan Samberg
David Farrance
Markus Phillips

Button's top 4 is the same as mine.

So I have to rethink my entire life now.
