When I see the pessimism about this team I'm like

The best possible team (minus McDavid) would be a CLEAR tournament favorite for me, and that offense would be ridiculous, better than the one in 2015. But let's say this is the final team:

Brett Howden - Nolan Patrick - Julien Gauthier
Graham Knott - Michael McLeod - Nick Merkley
Mitch Stephens - Tyson Jost - Keegan Kolesar
Anthony Cirelli - Nicolar Roy - Zach Senyshyn
Deven Sideroff

Thomas Chabot - Noah Juulsen
Jacob Chychrun - Dante Fabbro
Jake Bean - Jeremy Roy
Jeremy Lauzon

Carter Hart
Evan Cormier

This team would be a solid gold-medal contender and co-favorite with some of the other nations, and is missing 7 forwards, who would take the team to a whole different dimension. Seven forwards. Seven.

The absolute best line up would fly. They would destroy everyone.

Lawson Crouse - Dylan Strome - Mitch Marner
Pierre-Luc Dubois - Nolan Patrick - Travis Konecny
Anthony Beauvillier - Matt Barzal - Julien Gauthier
Tyson Jost - Michael McLeod - Nicolas Roy
Keegan Kolesar

That line up doesn't look that way at all. It would more likely miss the medal rounds altogether.

By having a + .915 sv% by time camp opens in December. Can anyone really predict goaltenders at this point?

I hope SV% isn't the requirement. Cormier doesn't do or have any asset that another goalie doesn't already have. Good for him for being invited. There are goalies though who are further developed then him at this point.

Oh i know, but talent wise Canada would be there with that team. These tournaments always come down to discipline and goaltending. To say they would miss the medal round is simply ignorant.

Lol no it's not "simply ignorant". There's a very good chance that roster was stack up pretty badly against the other teams. The team's overall speed wouldn't be great and it would probably be fairly low scoring as well. The defense is not fantastic either. As I said, that roster has a better chance of missing the medal round than winning gold.

Once again, lets look at the defense:

18th overall - 26th overall
16th overall - 17th overall
13th overall - 31st overall

Not that the NHL is the be all end all for determining how good players are but guys get paid big money to make these decisions. How is this defense not fantastic. What country has a better defense based on the draft?

Since this tournament is being played on North American ice, why would speed be the biggest factor?

Defense would be very solid but I don't find the offense all that dynamic.

Really? Because your method for evaluating the players seems to be draft position.

The last time we won was on North American ice with a high speed team - so I'm not sure why you don't think it's important.

Sure it is, other than having Hockey Canada hire full time scouts for every game.

Management is often bailed out by goalie coaches. Scouts also make mistakes. Case in point is Zach Sawchenko where scouts had reports on him from a year prior rather then the current year. These are the same scouts who preach size>>everything else. The prevalent thinking of "goalies are voodoo" is a crutch and wrong as well.

The thinking with the Cormier selection could have been that he's an interesting goalie who played for a below average Saginaw team so there could be something there. It's usually not a bad idea to throw a goalie an invite who might just be stuck playing behind a poor team. With a strong crop of goalies though competing for the roster Cormier stands out like a sore thumb.

Actually no, when I evaluate I typically watch them play and see how the stats tie up with my eyes. I'm not scouting for Hockey Canada however, I am just proving how stupid your comment was. The draft picks are just a small piece of information proving my point.

Canada has also won at home with a big slower team and a defensive team.

I don't know, I haven't seen all of them play but generally sv% will change many people's opinion on whether a goaltender is good or bad. It's pretty hard to fake a sv% of .920 over 30 games.

Lol, no - it's not a 'stupid comment'. And frankly, given you believe that the worst case scenario team is more likely to win a gold medal than miss the medals shows you haven't seen any of those players play all that much.

So Ingram doesn't have a shot when CLEARLY he was the top goalie in the WHL last season. Not to take anything away from Hart, but christ the Tips averaged some of the lowest amount of shots against in the entire WHL where Ingram faced some of the most against.

Boggles my mind how if Hockey Canada doesn't fall in love with you, how they don't notice you.

I assume you just quoted the wrong guy.

You said they were more likely miss the medal round than be a gold medal contender. I think thats a stupid statement because with any good coaching and goaltending they most likely make the semi finals, from there its a crap shoot based on goaltending.

To think that you would have to think that Finland would be rather a favorite if they played that TC in the quarter-finals - and of course assume that we'd lose both against US and against Russia in the round robin. If not, we would likely then play the Czechs in the QF.
