It is generally how Hockey Canada does things. One of the Assistants from the previous year gets elevated to the Head Coaching gig. Groulx was an Assistant in 2014, Lowry was an assistant in 2015, Durcharme 2016...

I wasn't thrilled with Groulx getting the gig after the Malmo fiasco and was highly critical of him during the December camp...but it all worked out in the end...

I'm sure I'll have opinions on the way Ducharme runs his team and not all will be positive. but in the end, Hockey Canada doesn't dick around too much when it's a home tournament.

All i can say is that Ducharme is highly regarded here in the province of quebec...i dont know if that means **** but he is regarded highly

Yup ....

I thought of steve spott as a total goofball

Lowry last year as a non comunicator

Why cant we hire a guy like guy boucher/kirk muller type of coach who is a fabulous communicator???

Why are we hiring these guys who cant seem to communicate????

Did anyone watch ducharme's interview? What did people think?
He didnt seem to be a communictor. How is his coaching style like?

I think this will be one of the best teams Canada has iced in quite a while:

Lawson Crouse - Dylan Strome - Mitch Marner
Pierre-Luc Dubois - Mathew Barzal - Travis Konecny
Anthony Beauvillier - Tyson Jost - Julien Gauthier
Pascal Laberge - Mitchell Stephens - Nolan Patrick
Nick Merkley

Thomas Chabot - Noah Juulsen
Jakob Chychrun - Ethan Bear
Jeremy Lauzon - Jeremy Roy
Dante Fabbro/Jake Bean

Carter Hart
Zack Sawchenko

These guys could all be in the NHL ( First line more likely ), now how good does it look?

Lose anymore than 2 of those, then we may as well kiss any chance at a gold medal goodbye. We still may compete for a medal though, play for a bronze...maybe.

Missing out on Strome and Crouse is not that big of a loss. But I'd rather not lose anybody else though. It will get dicey after that.

I would be very shocked to see Barzal or Konecny in the NHL next year. There isn't a place no the Islanders for Barzal yet, and Konecny needs to develop physically before he brings his style to the NHL.

Strome is a huge loss. He was quite good for Canada last year despite his skating weakness. I didn't like Marner's attitude at all last year, so if only one can come back and be a leader for the team, I would much rather Strome. I do believe that Marner will be the better NHL player though.

Meh, I'd rather Marner....and attitude smatitude. I remember a particular Hlinka tournament I didn't like Domi's attitude. and he got over it. but you are right, Marner's attitude was piss poor. I blame a lot of that on the coach. I've never been a Strome booster. so, happy to show him the door. I'm so anti- Strome, I'm looking forward to the day when the 3rd Strome brother is no longer junior eligible.

I agree that Strome is a loss. He was the best player on the team last year and I don't see anyone incoming who is as good as him.

On a different note, I hadn't realized that Canada will be participating in the USA Hockey U20 camp this summer. This is good news, imo - I liked the multi-team format more than the one Hockey Canada has been using.

USA Hockey announced today that the 2016 U.S. National Junior Evaluation Camp will take place at USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Michigan, from July 30-Aug. 6, 2016.

The week-long camp will include 10 international competitions between Canada, Finland, Sweden and the United States and serve as preparation for the 2017 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship which will take place from December 26, 2016, through January 5, 2017, in Montreal and Toronto, Canada.

Happy with this news. Never liked HC bringing the Russians and Czechs over. They should commit to this format for the next 3 or 4 years and then make evaluations...yay nor nay.

Fact is that Strome was good last year, and the 2017 tournament would suit him even more. I highly doubt that Arizona sends him back to junior or releases him for the tournament though, so it doesn't matter. Barzal and Konecny will likely lead the charge in 2017.

No, he wasn't good. None of them were. He played a couple of good games...1 of them against Denmark in a 5-2 win. He got the 4th goal and assisted on the 5th. big woop. and I thought he played well for half the 1/4 final against the Finns. and that was all she wrote.

I wish him a successful rookie year in Arizona. I hope he stays there and is a ROY candidate. If neither Barzal or Konecny are available this year, then ya, game over. regroup for another year.

He was good, and I'm pretty confident that even you admitted as such at the time. Your dislike of Strome is baseless at this point - many (myself included) assumed that Strome would struggle on the larger ice surface. He was good defensively and generated chances when Canada was struggling. Strome would be a more valuable asset for this tournament than anyone other than McDavid or arguably Marner, but he likely won't be there anyway.

Great coach, players seem to love playing for him. He is very prepared, and is always focused on having his teams play "their style" and not worry about the other teams. If the team looks good on paper, he will get the most from that talent - unlike some coaches who seem to underwhelm with the talent they have to use.

He is probably 60/40 in favour of offense style. He always seemed to be able to coach a team game where with injury or missing players, others could step into that role pretty seamlessly. Creative offensive players thrive under him. Drouin, Ehlers, Timo Meier are a few top 10 NHL picks that raced up the NHL draft rankings while developing under him. He doesn't hesitate to put rookies in key roles early on.

His AAA coaching record prior to joining the Q as an assistant was incredibly dominant with championship wins, and his CHL playoff record started with a 3rd round loss (game 6), Memorial Cup win, 3rd round loss (game 7) and 2nd round loss (game 7 - as the 12th seed, while missing an entire 2nd line to injury and having all but 1 rookies on defense). We missed the playoffs last year as we finished off the rebuild moves started the year before.

If he can get the players onboard with his vision quickly, it should be a great team to watch. I can't see him making the type of headscratching moves some of the coaches have made in recent history. There has hardly been a complaint about him in 5 years from Halifax fans. He is headed for a pro job.

That's not true. Strome was good - and he was certainly better than the rest of the team. Barzal was invisible a large chunk of the tournament (despite being named as one of Canada's top 3 players)...so I don't know why you're wanting him back and not Strome.

Unless I had an out of body experience or went completely loopy for a spell, I don't recall that at all. We finished 6th in the tournament? 1 regulation win in the group to finish 3rd in the group. I doubt I would have anything positive to say about a Canadian team performing to that particular standard and especially so re: any of the core players. They all had some good moments, a shift here and there, a game here and there, but collectively none of them put in good tournaments. If they had we wouldn't have gotten that result. but whatever...I'm not a Strome fan, I've made that abundantly clear since Day 1 of last summer's summer camp. I feel the same way about Strome as I did about Bo Horvat after Malmo...if he stays in Vancouver and is unavailable for TOR/MTL, then fine and dandy. But I do admit, I had a lot more confidence in the 1995 group then the 1997s. So, there's that point. If Strome is available, then he's on the team, for sure, no question. But if he's not, we'll get by just fine without him. If the NHL starts to further chip away at the other 1997s though, then that's not going to bode well for the good guys. It's a growing trend that we just don't have the depth anymore year over year to deal with 4-6 eligible players unavailable because their NHL GMs are morons.

Edit: Although, the depth may be there, if only Hockey Canada personnel could make the right player evaluations.

WOW nice information...nicely done:handclap:

I did hear good things from him on RDS as an up and comer...

But i was a little worried after watching his interview, he seemed either flustered or unprepared or something that i couldn't put my finger on...

I hope your analysis turns out...we will see during the summer evaluation

Thank you

Doesn't look like we'll have Strome or Marner. I was hoping for Marner, but he dominated the OHL and won the Memorial Cup. Barzal and Konecny will be relied on this tournament, but I like the all-around depth on this team. Here's my line-up before summer camp:

Crouse - Barzal - Konecny
Beauvillier - Jost - Dubois
Howden - Stephens - Gauthier
M.Joseph - N.Roy - Senyshyn
Merkley

Chabot - Juulsen
Lauzon - Fabbro
Chychurn - Guhle
Vande Sompel

Sawchenko
Fitzpatrick
Hart

Defence is solid, could add Meloche in there as well, but Fabbro is excellent, great passing ability and the player who can play the same way at any level. I believe in Jost and Dubois, young guys but they have good character and can help lead this team upfront. Hopefully no politics, pick the best players and please god just take the best goalies, not older average ones.

Fully agree with this poster, particularly the bolded. Mr. Writer exerts a tremendous amount of time and effort bashing Hockey Canada and particular players, many times for no apparent reason or without any rationale. Whether you personally dislike Strome or not it is ludicrous to assume this team would be better without him. He would, fairly easily along with Marner, be one of the best players in this tournament.

To add some context, in 15 games wearing a Canadian jersey (U-20, Ivan Hlinka, U-17) Strome has 15 goals and 23 points. All he's done for his country is produce, and your disdain for his inclusion on Canadian teams is, as the poster above notes, baseless.

I'd be very surprised if Nolan Patrick isn't on the team. Imo, he's the best of the '98 forwards.

Hockey Canada often deserves critiques. Strome hasn't really done anything to be a problem. Seems very likely that he will be in Arizona at the time of this tournament anyway though.

One positive with Ducharme is that he will already be familiar with many of the QMJHL. This year looks like it will have more Q players than most other years, and some in quite prominent roles, so that could be beneficial.

Interesting...

Surprised to not see Meloche among the defencemen. Bear too.

Also, kind of amazing to see so many Q defencemen at the national junior camp.

What is the citizenship situation with Foote? I believe he is Adam Foote's son. Has he lived in Canada mostly, or USA?

Forwards give a lot less to choose from than the defence. Kind of surprised that Speers and Harkins aren't there.
