The forward group and goaltending look to be pretty strong. Some question marks on D.

Isn't there always really questions on defense considering how young these players are?

2015 WJC team I felt very confident in our D.

But yes, your general point remains. It's really tough to project young D men at a tournament like this.

Ethan Bear will absolutely be on this team as a first pairing D and the QB of our PP.

Led all WHL D Men in points during the WHL Playoffs by a fairly decent margin. Great draft pick by the Oilers, this kid is a stud.

All the excitement over the world championship win got me thinking a bout this tournament. As far as I know we still haven't named a coach. I wonder if Hockey Canada is waiting for the NHL/AHL coaching staff announcements for the coming year. Last year we named our coaching staff earlier and lost at least one to the NHL(DJ Smith) and replaced him with a far lesser coach while Lowry himself was rumored to be heading to the Sharks. I wonder if maybe this messed up our preparation a bit.( I may be just grasping at straws to explain our crap tourney)

As for the actual coach I'm not sure who I want to do it, maybe Dale Hunter will be interested. Maybe Hockey Canada brings an NHL coach out of a job like the US did last year.

Scott Walker would be a good candidate; although, after U17 he indicated he wasn't going to coach any more.

I'm not in favour of seeing anyone from last year's disaster back.

Are they waiting for the memorial cup to end? mmm maybe a Hunter in mind????

I know for fact that Hunter has in the past said he was interested...

Let's assume every potential NHLer is loaned or doesn't make their respective NHL team out of camp, well than Team Canada is definitely the top candidate for a gold medal on home ice...

Crouse-Strome-Marner (Potential to be the most dominate line at the tournament with a year of WJC experience under their belt)

Dubois-Barzal-Konecny (This year Dubois has shown that he is one of the best Canadian players in this age range and when you put him with two guys that exceeded expectations at last years tournament, you have a second line that could be a first line on most teams at the tournament)

Mascherin-Beauvillier-Gauthier (Mascherin may be an unpopular pick to make the team but I think he's due for another huge stride next season that will force Hockey Canada to at least give him a shot with two guys that performed well at least years tournament)

Harkins-Stephens-Patrick (Nolan Patrick is the consensus number one prospect for NHL 2017 DRAFT and he will fit nicely with Stephens, a guy who exceeded expectations last year and a physical player like Harkins)

Speers

Chabot-Juulsen (I thought Juulsen would of made the team last year but he can definitely make a huge impact this year with a returning player like Chabot)

Chychrun-Roy (Both of these guys can log big minutes against the other teams top lines)

Lauzon-Meloche

Booth
Sawchenko
Hart

(I like all three equally of their chances to start)

Time to turn my attention to my favorite tournament...the most wonderful time of the year...

I'm not going to worry about who may or may not make NHL teams and thus be unavailable. There's only 1 player for certain who won't be there...and what the real roster will look like in December, we'll have to deal with that when the time comes...as of now....

1. I love Jost...and he could have a real west coast connection with Barzal.

2. I hope HC doesn't spend the entire month of the December trying to convince Canadians of this so called "chemistry" between Marner and Strome.

3. Q line. finally some positive input from Quebec. although, Roy could easily be replaced by some other player not from Quebec, I do like the other 2 players.

4. Crouse is where he should be. He's not a particularly elite scoring 1st line player and he should not be cast in that role here just because he's big, a returnee and 19 years old. There are more talented and younger players to play that role.

T JOST M BARZAL M MARNER
P-L DUBOIS D STROME T KONECNY
A BEAUVILLIER N ROY J GAUTHIER
L CROUSE M STEPHENS N MERKLEY

N PATRICK

J LAUZON E BEAR
T CHABOT N MELOCHE
J CHYCHRUN N JUULSEN
J BEAN/ B GUHLE D FABBRO/ J ROY

C HART
Z SAWCHENKO

Not really all that high on N. Patrick, but as a 13th. forward...

7th defenseman? pick any one of the highlighted 4. I'd prefer Fabbro...

Any rumours on coaching? They usually already have a name by now
Hunter?

I could be wrong, but isn't Hunter known as a coach mostly for getting the most talented players to London, and then giving them massive minutes? If that is the case, he really isn't the type of coach Canada needs.

I agree with the overall personnel of this team, I'd maybe make a few changes...

Forwards

Crouse-Strome-Marner

(Say what you want about Strome and Marner and I must admit they underperformed together last year, but remember they were 18 year olds in their first tournament. They now have a year under their belt and together will be the nucleus of Canada's offense. Crouse although not an elite scorer will play a heavy game and win puck battles to make sure the other 2 have the puck on their stick as much as possible, he also has some speed and can bury the puck when needed so that's why he's on this line for me)

Dubois-Barzal-Konecny

(Dubois had an average showing at the selection camp last year but you saw at the end of this season he was one of if not the most dominant player in the Q and when you pair up his speed and size with two guys that showed they can outplay the worlds best at last years tournament, you have now a second line that could be a first line on most of the other teams at the tournament)

Mascherin-Beauvillier-Gauthier

(Mascherin is my hottest take of making the team, the guy can flat out score and competes game in game out. I think his game will fit well with a great pairing from last year with Beauvillier and Gauthier, two guys that are once again a year older and more mature. Skill Speed and Size on this line is key for me here)

Jost-Stephens-Merkley

(All these players have strong two way games and can be a great shut down line which you always need)

Patrick

(He's my consensus #1 overall pick in 2017 so that alone gets him a spot)

Overall the forwards are smaller than usual but I think these guys will be able to overcome those obstacles

Defence

Chabot-Juulsen

(Juulsen should of made the team last year and Chabot was excellent last year so I guess by default they can form the top 2 pairing)

Chychrun-Bear

(Chychrun's strong two way game will allow Bear to move freely down the ice and do what he does best and that is create offense.)

Lauzon-Roy

(Lauzon adds the offensive skill while Roy adds a strong defensive aspect to this bottom pairing so they will fit well together.)

Bean

(Nothing really much to say about the 7th defenseman, they usually don't get much playing time but I think any of the guys you mentioned can fill the role)

Goalies

Hart
Sawchenko

(I agree with you on the goalies, clearly the best that this age group has to offer!)

Carter Hart, Zach Sawchenko and Evan Fitzpatrick are the best goalies Canada can send to the WJC right now with Stuart Skinner being a dark horse for the team.

Cant see Strome or Marner being on the team. They'll both easily make their NHL teams. It's just the matter of if they are loaned or not. The Leafs will be garbage again next year so they may decide to let him go if he doesnt get off to a good start in Toronto

And Jost is a lock to make the team. Might wear a letter as well.

Ducharme (sp) named head coach

What do you think

Wasnt he part of that debacle last year??

He was. but that doesn't mean anything. Lowry was an assistant on the perfect 2015 team and followed that up with being an total nincompoop in 2016 as the head coach.

Ducharme is a capable coach...it's player selection where things often go off the rails.

Anyways, i think here in quebec ducharme is highly rated. But that dosnt mean much i guess

Lowry was awful

Ducharme has been officially named:

I'm not overjoyed by anyone from last season's coaching staff being back, but hopefully it will be fine. He did coach the Mooseheads to a MC.

It is generally how Hockey Canada does things. One of the Assistants from the previous year gets elevated to the Head Coaching gig. Groulx was an Assistant in 2014, Lowry was an assistant in 2015, Durcharme 2016...

I wasn't thrilled with Groulx getting the gig after the Malmo fiasco and was highly critical of him during the December camp...but it all worked out in the end...

I'm sure I'll have opinions on the way Ducharme runs his team and not all will be positive. but in the end, Hockey Canada doesn't dick around too much when it's a home tournament.
