Sure. He's had tremendous success with Halifax. Though it would be good to know what exact role he played in our disastrous 2016 effort, particularly with respect to our special teams play. Special teams are typically an area that the assistance coaches focus in on, and both our PP and PK were pretty bad over the course of the tournament.

The poor performance had more to do with the head coach putting the wrong players out 5v5 and the wrong goaltender than anything. Benching Virtanen and putting McDonald in earlier, and this team is in the medal round IMO.

So you thought the special teams play was satisfactory? We got eaten alive on the penalty kill (some of this can be attributed to the goaltending), while any production from our power-play was largely a function of individual efforts by Marner and Strome.

Like you, while I hold Lowry responsible for the collective failures of this team, before anointing Ducharme as head coach for next year's tournament I'd like for Hockey Canada to examine what areas of coaching/managing the team he was responsible for, and how he fared. A poster above noted that Ducharme was responsible for the power-play at this tournament, which is not exactly a feather in his cap.

I'm not going to speculate about who sticks in the NHL next year. I'd rather deal with that in October at the close of NHL camps to get a clearer picture of who will be and who won't be available.

1. Still can't find a solution to the Strome Marner "chemistry" dilemma. but the 2nd line would be my go to line anyway I'd rather not mess with that. Marner and Strome with the coaches are going to have to find a way to make it work.
2. I want to see more from Benson for the remainder of this year and next, otherwise I may prefer Jost.
3. if Crouse is indeed back for a 3rd. tournament, that 3rd line is big, fast and skilled.
4. Get an accomplished coach and be better prepared. being at home, motivation won't be the problem.

Stephens need to be there, even if its centering the 4th line again. I thought he was good at this year's tournament when he was on the ice (which unfortunately wasn't that often). I think Senyshyn from SSM has a good chance next year as well, as a very speedy natural winger who can find the back of the net.

I can't see Strome back next year. He almost made Arizona out of camp this year, and would have improved upon his weaknesses (strength and skating) by the time camp hits next fall. Arizona is a low-pressure situation for him, and I imagine management there would like him to be part of their nucleus of young, talented forwards going forward. Crouse will certainly be NHL-ready by next fall in terms of his size and style of game, the only question will be whether he's playing enough of a role for the Panthers that they don't release him.

I'm not sure about Marner. The kid needs to hit the weight room and increase his strength significantly. It's possible with the right S&C coaching and some dedication. He's always going to be slight of build as compared to your typical NHLer, but if you look at a guy like Konecny who's roughly the same height as Marner, his relative strength is superior based on testing at the combine last summer. And it shows in his game too.

I'm certainly not a card carrying member of the Dylan Strome fan club. I'll be happy and ready to move on from him should he stick with the big club out of camp in October. And that is the obvious solution to the Strome-Marner chemistry dilemma.

Marner will always be slight of build. I imagine he'll be in T.O. but in a limited role thus will be available come Christmas time.

as for the others, we'll see come October.

anymore musings from any of the suits at Hockey Canada? coach returning or a search for a new coach is on?

Hart and Montembeault early favorites for the goalie spots?

Montembeault is too old. Right now it should be Hart & Sawchenko with Boothe, Timpano, Fitzpatrick, (insert Canadian Junior Goalie) etc. all fighting for the 3rd spot in the summer in order to have a chance with a hot start to the season in 2016.

Well honestly both the PP and PK were very good in the quarters. Hard to blame the penalty kill for giving up two goals when they are put out there 9 times and one of them was 5-3 and the PP came through twice in the third when we needed it.

Haven't seen anything recently on the coach, aside from Renney's insane comments a few days ago.

If Marner does return next year, I'd be inclined to line him up at center to make room for both Konecny and Gauthier in the top-6. I think he plays predominantly RW in London, but he has the skillset of a center

Dubois - Marner - Konecny
Beauvillier - Barzal - Gauthier
Jost - Patrick - Senyshyn
Benson - Stephens - Roy
13F: Merkley / McLeod / Brown / Bitten

According to Bob McKenzie, Canada will be opening the tournament with a game against Russia on boxing day and then will have their NYE game against US.

I really don't like this we are the host team, we get to pick our schedule so why are we quite possibly playing our toughest game first. In 2015 our schedule was perfect not a horrible team but not great first in Slovakia ,when emotions are running high and maybe some bugs still need to worked out then on the second half of the back to back the weakest team( Germany) and then a day of rest for one tough team Finland then another day of rest then the USA. Of course the reason is, is that TSN and Hockey Canada want to optimize ratings so they can get more money which is sad. The one saving grace is that Russia often struggles early in tournaments.

The host country doesn't get free rein to come up with 100% most optimal advantageous schedule. The schedule is determined to some extent by order of finish from the previous tournament with wiggle room by the host country to make 1 or 2 changes.

I don't believe there is a coach named. I am interested to see who won't be available... I am assuming that Strome and Crouse will be gone. Possibly Marner as well. For draft eligibles, Dubois or Chychrun could conceivably make the NHL next year. Both Roys also worthy of consideration for making this team too.

Ya, well! I hope Strome is in the NHL and unavailable, and I'm sure you're hoping Chychrun in in the NHL and unavailable...but our reasoning for that is different, no doubt!

It would be a mistake imo for Chychrun to be in the NHL next year. but there's just no accounting for the lunacy level of NHL GMs.

Dubois to a lesser extent, but depending on what team drafts him, in the right situation he could very well be in the NHL next year and do well.

Unless Marner really comes on strong in training camp and his first 9 games with the Leafs, I could see him playing in this tournament.

Not that there is anything wrong with that. Domi looks like he's doing fine in the NHL this year with an extra year in the O.

The big this against Marner is that the Leafs have a lot of guys in the minors who are close to, if not already NHL ready. Nylander is a lock, but if you watch the Leipsic's, Brown's, Hymans and Soshnikov's play, its hard to justify sending those guys down if Marner is anything less than impressive

Who is e bear?

This is the first i hear of this person

Why is he first pairing?

Hart
Sawchenko
Skinner

Ethan Bear. 1997 born D-man playing in the DUB.

and I put him there not because he's a surefire stud future NHL 25+ minute #1 paring D-man, but if you take a closer look at line number 2. I like the prospect of the Chychrun Fabbro connection at the U18 currently underway and the Jost Fabbro connection from their club team. That isn't a number 1 line but it could be a deadly lethal #2 line. So, I had to find a spot for Bear, he can either be in the 1st. pairing or 3rd. that's up to the coach. If there's an existing connection between players, then I'd prefer to see that continue.

This line just makes sense to me. And as Chychrun and Fabbro will both be underage players at the tournament, playing top pairing minutes may be a little too much for them at this moment in time. Chychrun is not exactly lighting it up offensively at the U18 in a tournament for 1998 born players. He's been good with Fabbro, fantastic pairing. I like what I've seen...but not prepared to give him the keys to the kingdom at the U20 tournament.

Jost-Barzal Konecny
Chychrun Fabbro

The defense mentioned in posts are all around 6-6.2 and around 200pounds i think chycrun is the heaviest at 214

That being said, i dont see who out of the defence will be able to break up a cycle game. I dont see a buiser type of player. Or a defence player who is physical

Last year we did get puched around even on big ice. This year will be on smaller ice, where are the bruisers who can skate?

if you are looking for a 6.5 230lb D-man, there isn't one...not unless we have one hiding somewhere playing NCAA in the States.

There is Logan Stanley currently on the U18 team, but he'd be way out of his element in the U20 tournament this Christmas. Look for him for the Buffalo tournament in 2018...maybe...there's no guarantee he'd make that team either when his time comes.

Ethan Bear will be quarterbacking the PP as a right shot Dman.

Fitzpatrick has been exceptional at U18. very impressed. Goaltending like that is what will steal Gold Medals. Keep it going, young Evan. but for now I still have Hart to be the better goaltender. Either way, it bodes well for Canada's goaltending at the next 2 World Juniors as I would place those 2 '98 goaltenders ahead of any of our '97 born goaltenders.

Whoever they choose, it would be good if Canada invited a few guys to the pre-tournament (winter) Camp to compete for the spots, rather than just naming two guys right off the bat...have them battle it out.

Well, I agree, but Hockey Canada has adopted the philosophy that having goaltenders battling it out at an evaluation camp leaves them too worn out during tournament play... apparently our goaltenders can't deal with the stress of competing and winning a roster spot and then dealing with the stress of playing and winning a tournament. It's all too much for them.

but I think that goes for 99% of the team anyway. I really don't think the evaluation camp makes much of a difference anyway for any position player/roster spot. The team is formed in the heads of Hockey Canada officials long before evaluation camp rolls around.

Fitzpatrick is outstanding. So is Hart, but don't forget Zach Sawchenko either (very late 97 birth).

Who do you have as the leadership group? My picks are:
C - Konecny
A - Crouse (if he's there), Barzal
