couldn't have been that much of a big trade pick, GM's Wanted loads for D. We still have plenty of assets to get rid off for them. SY has already said that he will be looking at trades as there aren't many options in FA and they will be overpriced.

Correct. There arent many FA options and we have big wholes on O and D. On top of that, we don't have the "best" trade chips (even though some on here think we habe good ones).

That's why this is a scary situation.

also could trade draft picks for next year, we probably were in a worse situation during the middle of the season, still managed to get out of it well, due to SY moving and trading people.

Big holes? We have 5 of our 6 defenders set, with Koekkoek being the potential 6th. 8 of the top 9 set, with Gourde potentially the 9th. We could upgrade on a player or two but we don't have big holes.

I 100% disagree. We cannot be a serious cup contender and go into the season with the defense that is currently on our squad. That needs to be improved. And if it is just 1 of the 6 spots that needs filled, it needs to be filled with a real good defenseman - which means a "big hole".

Oh, and losing Drouin gives us a big hole to fill on offense.

The defense is almost the same as the one who won the cup in 2015. Swap a declining Garrison for a rising Dotchin and Carle for Koekkoek and it's similar.

Drouin had 27 ES points, not that hard to replace. Stamkos will get more than that, Callahan should too, Gourde had 7 in 20 games so could come close with more minutes and role.

Our 1st was a big trade chip for us.

Scary to think we're gonna rely heavily on FA....

I agree we had two big trading chips this offseason 1. Drouin which we traded for a prospect. 2. The 14th pick in the draft which we drafted cal foote. Do these moves help stamkos and hedman in there prime today ? Kucherov two more years until he might bolt from this disaster. Because unless stamkos is healthy next year and kucherov is awesome other then them we will struggle to score goals. There is not much to like on July 1st that really we can get.

Free agency hasn't started yet. Let's wait a while before throwing our furniture out the window and setting the house on fire. ;)

The book on 2017-2018 season hasn't even begun to be written yet but people are already acting like it's over already. Yzerman is not going to leave the roster as it is. Moves will be made. Let's see what they are. Also can't forget about the trade deadline too. We already have a solid roster. A little tinkering, which I think SY does, and we're in business. Just stay healthy is all I ask of the hockey gods.

Yep, I think that's the key. It's a long offseason. I'm not saying bury the pitchforks, just lay them down for another week or two.

Yzerman said he's looking for a top 4 D and top 9 F. We still have like 10 weeks before pre-season starts. Let's calm ourselves.

We should be in a win now mode. Some of the moves look more for the future vs helping the team today...now. Freaking go for it all.

I think we've done a good job of mixing the two up. We're trying to keep competitive now while not ruining the future of the team.

Just because you're in "win now" mode doesn't mean you completely give up on the future. To extend cup windows, you need contributors on ELCs. The best way to guarantee that is a good prospect pool.

Anaheim has been a contender for years now, and they also regularly have one of the best prospect pools in the league. They've trade established players for futures (see: Bobby Ryan) in order to extend that window. Chicago traded an established player in Saad for younger players as well (and then flipped him right back).

The overreaction on here is getting really damn annoying.

1) Not trade Drouin for an 18 yr old future.

2) Hjalmarsson

3) Use our 2017 1st

4) Not package Gusev for a cap dump

Just off the top of my head...

the Garrison dump was fine, the drouin trade was not for next season in the long run it could work out. Yes I would have tried hard for Hjalmarsson! then sign Brian Boyle in FA and sign Verstegg in FA.
