I didn't think of that, imagine if we started finally playing Koekkoek because "he's put in his due" over the more talented Sergachev, then hesits as a 7th defenseman the majority of the season cause he can't go to the AHL, sees no PP or ice time, gets upset...sounds familiar... all of a sudden a KHL offer sounds more appealing. The story of Cooper and young talented players continues.

I wouldn't be surprised if Koekkoek ended up on waivers. I hope I'm wrong, but it's a scenario I could see playing out.

I mean I don't even like him but the criticism is off-base, unless of course you think he's a #1/2 then sure he's as disappointing as some people are making out, as a #6 he's probably in line with every other #6 out there.

Like you said, we could use an upgrade but that's far from our bigger issues.

He isn't, though, and thats the problem. I mentioned before a guy like Nesterov would have his dumb moments, but he could move the puck and get a shot on net. Sustr can't get a puck through traffic to save his life, which is incredible because he was taken out of college for his ability to run the PP at Nebraska Omaha. His possession numbers suck, he consistently gives up more high danger chances than his peers when on the ice (crazy enough, followed by Drouin and post-injury Stralman...), his outlets/zone exits are bad... if he had redeeming qualities like "hey, he's stupid but he'll be good for 20-25 assists like Matt Carle and way cheaper" I could dismiss it, but his only redeeming quality seems to be "born a child giant" and he doesn't seem to get that, either.

He still has the 3rd most goals of all lightning defenders the last 2 years. He's not good at any only thing in particular but he does enough things well enough that he's competent. He's also cheap. If you are expecting more you're going to be disappointed, if you take him for what he is he's a serviceable defender.

That's not a compliment, our defense can't score save for Heddy.

Thought you would have been on the Montreal boards by now!?!?

Sticking with Tampa or your boy Drouin??

Tampa is still my favorite team, Drouin is still my favorite player. I still don't like Montreal at all though.

EDIT: My reasons being 1. I'm loyal and 2. I have too much hatred for the habs to become even nearly a fan

He's 3rd out of maybe 7 defenders who consisted of Garrison, Coburn and Carle for a majority of the time. You act like he's ahead of a mobile unit and he's cruising with more goals from good defenders. Coburn hasn't been an offensive contributor since his arrival, bar Garrisons first, neither has he which has been disappointing and Carle...well, enough said.

It's been over 300 games and there's such a minimal improvement that if you're really going to say, "well, he's serviceable and cheap," then I guess that's good enough for a complacent team. Rather, I would like to see as I'm sure you would, somebody else be given a chance that actually can provide offense or throw the body yet not be a liability out there the majority of the time.

It's not a compliment but it's the facts. He's 3rd in scoring, block shots and takeaways, yet he gets about the 4th or 5th most minutes and is the 5th or 6th highest paid. Sure we can upgrade him but he's not the problem, our other defenders aren't doing enough to make him look as bad as most suggest he is.

Average sustr breakout:

pass puck to teammate
oh shoot that's not a teammate
its an opponent in scoring position

Yzerman seems to be on a mission to clear cap and gear up for signings.

The question is who?

He's clearing a good amount of cap so he should have some money to throw around.

Who's it gonna be: Shatty, Oshie, Neal, Marleau, Dumba, Vatanen??????

We will overpay someone for too long of a term and then be unable to re-sign Kucherov.

I'd say a defenseman! ducks and wild made a deal to protect Dumba and Vatanen so it can't be them. likley Paul Martin and maybe sign Marleau also.

we aint signing marleau at 8.75 million or whatever get a clue

martin is target but could be methot etc.. guys like that to me martin bring the most on type of player stevie covets was pretty much a captain in past solid character stanley cup winner etc.. 250k more then garrison with one extra year so you move garrison and its covered

leaves us about 4 something in cap to play with for 1-2 forwards but dont see us making a big splash

boyle makes sense cause of his faceoff ability and ours sucks a bit

other guys are guys who want that cup chance in age vrbata types who can pot 50 if will come in for 1.5 or so or iglina etc..

thats what i see tyjo palat getting 5.5 each us having 4-5 spending room boyle and another guy who wants a cup on the cheap

It's not 2011. Marleau can't command huge dollars anymore. I doubt we go after either guy though.

if remember right he is in a contract a 6.85 million for a year or more

i want nothing to do with that myself

UFA, and he could be cup hunting. Probably in line for a significant pay cut regardless. Teams aren't really paying top dollar for guys over 35 anymore. Unless some post-Iginla contracts are escaping me.

I wouldn't mind Marleau on a short term deal, but not really as a top option. He can still goals. And I'd rather see, for instance, Marleau-Stamkos-Kucherov than Namestnikov-Stamkos-Kucherov. But again, I don't think we should be throwing the kitchen sink at a 38 year-old either. If we address our other needs and have some spare cap, then it could be a good move.
