One of my favorite trade deadline memories was from 2001 (ie, the old old HF message board days). For weeks, this one Habs fan would post outlandish trade ideas for Eric Weinrich. At the time, Weinrich was an okay defenseman who was playing a ton of minutes for Montreal because they didn't have depth.

But he was a rental and a few months away from turning 35. One in particular I remember was a straight trade for Alexander Mogilny who was in the midst of a 43 goal season.

Despite the negative feedback to all his proposals, the Habs fan confidently declared that he'd be proven right on deadline day and that we all undervalued Weinrich.

Weinrich was then traded straight up for forgettable defenseman Patrick Traverse. The whole board had a good laugh about that and the Habs fan was suddenly nowhere to be found.

That said, somebody made the observation that all fan bases probably have 2% wacko posters. I post on the Kings board since I need a break from the Devils board at times. Since Montreal and Toronto have large fan bases, the number of wackos is just more pronounced.
if we're going down the memory lane here, there was this leafs fan back in 02 who traded spare parts for superstars. he even got to trade for jason allison with the Kings. and in his loaded all star lineup, he even forgot to pencil Allison in there.

One flames fan burned him real bad. he said, and i'm paraphrasing here, "hey, you see a wall. hit your head several times. if you see stars, stop"

Conjuring up memories of the "Martin Skoula has more puck poise than Nick Lidstrom" thread by an insane Avs fan (I believe he went by the handle of KL).

This one wasn't a HF trade proposal, but a rumor floated from Bruce Garrioch of Ziggy Palffy for Dominik Hasek, and this was a year after the Kings acquired Ziggy, and while Hasek was still pretty much carrying the Sabres on his shoulders.

I also recall the numerous Nikolai Khabibulin trade rumors and how so many of us thought it made so much sense for the Kings to trade him, then he goes to Phoenix for a bunch of crap. Similar to the load of crap the Penguins got for Jagr, and we had some Pens fans trying to convince people that Milan Kraft and Tomas Surovy and Konstantin Koltsov were all going to be stars.

Too bad we can't use the web archive to conjure up these old posts.

Why waste a 2nd rounder on a guy like Grabner? He won't be used in our top 6 once Carter is back, and how much more of an upgrade is he than Kempe, Lewis, Amadio, Brodzinski etc.? I don't think getting him will somehow make us contenders. Also, Blake already said that he won't go after rentals and is looking to make a hockey trade. So based on that, I don't see us getting Nash, Kane, Grabner, or Maroon. The only way I would be cool with getting perhaps Maroon or Grabner is if the cost was a prospect that doesn't have a shot of getting on the Kings, e.g., someone like Mersch. But I doubt Mersch could fetch us a rental like that unless we added a draft pick.

I would love it if the Kings tried to get Tatar. He is signed for a few years, and would look great with Kopitar. We can then move Iafallo to the third line with Kempe and Amadio, which would be a strong line since Iafallo is a puck retriever, Amadio is a distributor, and Kempe is a shooter/driver.

How much more of an upgrade is Grabner over Kempe, Lewis, Amadio, Brodzinski etc.? Dude had 27 goals last year and has 25 so far this year. Definitely an upgrade for sure.

But the most I would consider is 2nd rounder and even then I wouldn't be happy. He would be nice but he's also north of 30 and set to be UFA next season. Can only imagine he'll get some sort of raise from his current $1.65M and probably on a 2-4YR deal. I'm all for the Kings keeping as many low round picks as possible. Can't be trading low picks for rentals anymore.

I'd say we stick with Carter (and I guess Lewis) being our deadline "pickups" and let them go for it. Kings have the talent... they just all need to perform like we know they can. As we saw in 2012, all you have to do is get into the playoffs and anything is possible.

I say stand pat, go with the guys we have, give them a chance to fight for a playoff spot and hopefully experience playoff hockey. The young guys need experience more than anything else. This is an important part of player development.

Iafallo-Kopi-Brown
Pearson-Carter-Toffoli
Reider-Kempe-Lewis

Mitchell, Brodz, Clifford, Amadio, Andreoff, Thompson, Mersch (gotta be sent down or traded).

We have too many forwards

Watch the Kings move Amadio, Clague, and a pick for Tavares...

Iafallo-Kopitar-Brown
Kempe-Tavares-Rieder
Pearson-Carter-Toffoli
Clifford-Mitchell-Lewis
Thompson/Andreoff

:sarcasm:

Maybe if EDM is moving Maroon they will want a replacement and take AA or Clifford? Wasn't Hextall a fan of Clifford too?

Prospects that I could see being moved because they might be deemed slow are Mersch, MacDermid, Auger.

Current bottom 6 guys I can see getting traded, just because of the surplus:

Clifford
Andreoff
Brodzinski

Guys I doubt they trade:

Amadio
Lewis
Kempe
Iafallo

I doubt Mitchell or Thompson are traded because they were recently acquired.

I agree Clifford makes too much and Andreoff might be a sell high, but I worry about toughness if they go.

Clifford rarely fights though he does have one of the highest hits per game on the team. Andreoff is a punching bag. Thompson/Dion/Folin/Brown/Forbort are all willing. Not to mention we still have MacDermid in Ontario. Arguably one of the best fighters in the AHL/NHL.

It seems like all our toughness is gravitating towards the defense. MacDermid is not going to sniff this roster again for a long time, if ever.

I don't think its a major worry, but it's nice to have a little more of that element.

Tatar would be the perfect option for the Kings. Still has term, young enough to fit in with the core and skilled enough to play with Kopitar.

Tatar--Kopitar--Brown
Pearson--Carter--Toffoli
Kempe--Amadio--Iafallo
Lewis--Mitchell--Brodzinski

Edit: forgot to post earlier in the day. And now didn't see the trade...I'm an idiot lol

Come playoff time I see this as our lineup if fully healthy with Amadio rotating in if someone has a bad game .

Andreoff will get traded or waived and Brodzinski sent down. Their ice time has been the least last few games .

guys it's REEEEDER not RYYYYDER

therefore, it's Rieder, not Reider

i'm expecting a long season, so let's get his name right, right now!
