So with Drew, Muzzin, A-Mart, Forbort and Dion likely occupying a spot on the roster for the next 3 years I would test the water on Gravel and even LaDue (wouldn't want to deal him). If someone offers something with value for either or I would consider.

seriously you and i can't possibly know this

i assumed they would have kept Gaborik one more year (this season) to see how he pans out and if he didn't, they'd possibly look into buying him out

his buyout as of this summer is very manageable and frees up roughly $1.5m to $3.3m in cap (over the next 3 years and gets better the following 3 years). With that money we can easily get a better player than Gaborik

$3.3m in freed up cap is serious money, and if you are 200% certain that Blake wouldn't want to free all that cap, then he's already a terrible GM (because it's braindead logic to buy him out)

Next year wasn't the issue with a Gaborik buyout. It's the $3m in dead cap space in both 19-20 and 20-21. Plus another $1m for 3 years after that. That's on top of the space still taken up by Richards. In 19-20, Richards and Gaborik would've taken up about $4.5m in cap space. It may not matter, since who knows if there's a lockout that year or not, but a completely wasted $4.5m is serious money too.

Looking around the league, the Kings are one of the few teams that have 2 guys they're paying to not be here. They're still paying Greene next year, plus Richards. Do they throw Gaborik onto that pile too? It's possible. With those 3 next year, that's around $4m in dead space. Which I think pretty much takes up whatever the increase in the cap is supposed to be.

Maybe they were going to buy him out, but then figured they would try spending that space on Phaneuf instead. Even if he's awful, they're at least paying a guy to show up to work each day.

Unless it's a compliance thing, buyouts are rarely the better way to go. Doubtful the Kings get anyone great with whatever is saved from buying Gaborik out. Who would they really get for $3m?

Good news.

This acquisition started the turnaround the Kings needed in 2001 to get to the playoffs.

In 23 games with the Kings that season, Potvin would post a record of 13-5-5, a GAA of 1.96, and a .919 SV%.

I remember when the Kings had a promo where they'd give away vouchers for free half-a-dozen of Krispy Kreme donuts every time the Kings were pitching a shutout after 40 minutes of play, and that was happening so often after they got Potvin that they changed the promo to a shutout for the game.

Hopefully Quick can pull his head out of his ass and put on a strong performance like that down this last stretch. There are 26 games remaining. The Kings need Quick to be at the top of his game, because this past month, we are seeing some of the worst performances of his career.

Now that was dumpster diving by Taylor. A goalie from the goalie graveyard in Vancouver that wasn't even playing for them anymore? Potvin vs. Roy was cool.

The team from the 2001 deadline to Game 7 against Colorado in the 2002 1st round was entertaining. Then it all disintegrated quickly.

Jason Allison gave this team the true #1 center they coveted for a very long time, but the team had such little depth, replacing Luc's scoring and offense with Steve Heinze, which was a huge downgrade, and you can even argue that the scoring depth was impacted by the Allison trade, having lost two top six forwards in Stumpel and Murray in exchange for one in Allison (and a depth guy in Eloranta).

Then things fell apart, Karalahti preferring to party over practice, gets dealt for Cliff Ronning, who doesn't work out. The tight fisted Kings let Boucher go to a division rival after he put on the best performance of his career with the team. Then Deadmarsh and Allison breakdown, and Palffy is pretty much was the only one carrying the team in the standings. And after Potvin became a UFA, the Kings brought in Cechmanek as his replacement, and we really never saw a stable presence in net until Jonathan Quick came around. They went over a decade with zero stability in net.

That's scary.

It actually turns me on that Blake isn't gonna go balls out for a rental. I'm not used to this. I'm proud.

Blake sounds extremely reasonable and not short sighted. Glad to see.

Also, Carter is gonna come back really pumped to make a difference considering how long hes been out, so he's probably gonna be super motivated. Which is going to be huge.

Lastly, if Blake makes a trade it's pretty much gotta be a really solid one.

Hope he finds a good trade for a bottom 6 scoring winger.

Started to follow the Kings around this time. I had no internet and had to go the library for internet. I could only watch the scores on CNN teletext.

Cliff Ronning was my first expierence as trade deadline deal.

Remember the "Heinze 57" hype?? Our huge off-season signing...

Ziggy, you've been summoning up the dark days a lot, recently :)

It has seemed pretty obvious with what Blake has done so far, i.e. not done so far, that he wouldn't be moving top prospects or going for rentals.

Definitely not earth shattering news. Carter is the trade deadline acquisition. *Maybe* he can move one of the young-ish defenseman and a mid-round pick for a 15 goal guy for the Bottom 6.

Think he is pretty pleased to get Thompson. Moves Kempe back to wing once Carter is back.

9/11/23
70/77/73
19/71/22
13/44/Whoever

You can play around with the first three LWs however you see fit.

Yeah, but that 01-02 PP was pretty good. 1st overall. 3rd best PK too.

You either get fired quickly, or remain GM long enough to see yourself become short sighted.

Why did the Kings trade Demitra again? What was the purpose of that trade? Wasn't he like our leading scorer at the time ? Parrish and Osullivan ?

And i don't remember why we traded Frolov., what did we get from the rangers?

I don’t know what more Blake can do aside from tear it all down and rebuild.

They have inserted rookies.

Are in the playoff push with five other teams.

All without Carter.

Quick is struggling.

They won’t mortgage the future.

They will offer DD a max contract.

Can’t have best of both worlds.
They won't and shouldn't offer Doughty a max contract. If the cap goes to the 82m high point That would be 16.4m for 8 years And Blake should get ran out of town if he even thinks of going that high.
Now i can see it going to 12m over 8 but I can hope for 11m.

Nothing, Frolov was never traded.

They just let him go.

What is the point of a Pavol Demitra on a rebuilding team, eapecially right before the draft?

And Frolov walked as a UFA from us after the first playoff series failure against Vancouver.
