Why did the Kings trade Demitra again? What was the purpose of that trade? Wasn't he like our leading scorer at the time ? Parrish and Osullivan ?

One of Lombardi's first speeches as a General Manager was him talking about "players who were hurt versus players who were injured."

ASK A KING: DEAN LOMBARDI

I think it's partly bad luck. But I also think that knowing the difference between being injured and being hurt is part of the culture and I think that's something we can improve on.

Demitra would miss a lot, and the impression I got was he viewed Demitra as a player who would miss because he was hurting, but not because he was injured.

The Kings acquired the 17th overall pick, which turned out to be Trevor Lewis, as well as Patrick O'Sullivan, who was a highly touted prospect at the time who fell to the 2nd round due to the issues with his father.

Non-rental options who may or may not fit that criteria of guys who have some term remaining who aren't "pure rentals" ...

Tomas Tatar (UFA, 2021)
Gustav Nyquist (UFA, 2019)
Brock Nelson (RFA, 2019)
Mats Zuccarello (UFA, 2019)
Chris Kreider (UFA, 2020)
Jeff Skinner (UFA, 2019)
Paul Byron (UFA, 2019)
Boone Jenner (RFA, 2018)
Wayne Simmonds (UFA, 2019)
Nick Bjugstad (UFA, 2021)
Sam Reinhart (RFA, 2018)

Granted, some of these names will cost quite a bit more than others, but those are some possibilities in terms of guys who won't be free agents this summer.

Remember the "Heinze 57" hype?? Our huge off-season signing...

Ziggy, you've been summoning up the dark days a lot, recently :)

Ha, well, we are kind of reliving those "dark days" again, given how thing have been with this team since 2014-15.

No playoff series wins since 2014... it's reminding me of that stretch from 1994 through 2000 where the Kings had not won a single playoff game since Game 1 against Montreal in 1993. Then they finally ended that streak in 2001.

From the pre game show interviews and what Fox said it seems like the Kings are not looking for a rental, have extra defenseman and are looking to make a hockey trade for a scoring winger. I think if Phaneuf shakes out, they might move one of our defenseman for a winger, maybe Martinez, Forbort or LaDue.

Lombardi did what many are saying regarding Carter: traded a guy before he declined since the team needed to do a rebuild.

That 1st rounder could have been Giroux but turned into Lewis. O'Sullivan was one of the highest rated prospects in hockey at the time.

Lewis is voted Unsung Hero by his teammates every year and is a key member of two Cup teams (GWA Game 5 VAN 2012/GWG Game 6 ANA 2014). O'Sullivan was eventually flipped for Williams who did some okay stuff for LA while he was here.

The Wild went on to win zero with Demitra. The teams involved in the O'Sullivan deal went on to win nothing.

Great trade even if they could have taken a better player than Lewis. Lombardi then went on to trade for Johnson before the start of the season and then made the Stoll/Greene trade after that season. Set the team up for future success while helping the tank job that got Doughty.

Williams did "okay stuff"? lol, come on, gotta give him more credit than that

I distinctly remember people being much higher on O'Sullivan than Kopitar, myself included. Then Kopi changed that pretty quickly after his first 2 games in the league...

I thought O'Sullivan would have a more immediate impact than Kopitar, though I thought Kopitar had the higher upside.

I'd lose my **** if we traded for Wayne Simmonds, but that would cost an arm and a leg.

i'm down

AND Blake mentioned 5 d that he was happy with depthwise, Doughty, Muzzin, Martinez, Phaneuf and Forbort. He's gonna move LaDue, Gravel or Fantenberg.

Had a great shot and great hands. Scored 93 points in 78 games during his rookie AHL year, including 47 goals. Looked like a keeper for the Kings as well. Trading for the oft-injured Williams while moving a young guy that scored 20+goals and 50+ points the year prior wasn't met with a ton of excitement on these boards.

Never really looked as good at the NHL level again as he did with LA. I think it has mostly been blamed on his mindset due to his abusive childhood.

I was a big fan. Was the most purely skilled winger on the team and was a fit age-wise with the young core at the time (Brown/Kopitar/Johnson/Doughty/Quick)
O'Sullivan had all the talent in the world, just didn't have his head screwed on correctly, and that was definitely not all his fault.

I saw him make a backhand saucer pass over a defenseman's stick going at top speed to a wide open Brown for a goal and my jaw dropped.

We need to trade some of our better players. It’s that simple. We have a very imbalanced talent pool. We have arguably 4-5 NHL defensemen but don’t have enough skill at F. We don’t have playmakers. Kopitar has a keen eye etc. but that is it. Toffoli, Kempe, Brodzinski, and Pearson role is more barge ahead and shoot. Same w Carter, Brown, Lewis, Clifford, Andy. Iafallo shows some promise in handling the puck and being creative, as does Amadio. Some of these guys were so neutered by DS about being creative that it is gone. Some never ever had it. We need to trade guys like Pearson, Carter, Muzzin, Martinez, Forbort but take a chance on a younger kid that is thought to be creative. I’m sure this V kid coming in will be another barge ahead and shoot. I think gradually as the season has wore on the message to the players as DS. That is not good.

First thing they need to do is win more 50/50 puck battles.

Just for fun, Toffoli + Forbort for Simmonds. Any chance this is doable?

Two younger guys for an older guy that will be a UFA next year? That seems to be what people don't want to see happen.

Simmonds is Doughty's friend though. Should they do anything to make him happy even though he's going to leave? Instead of the FOG's we get the FOD's?
