Is anyone else considering how sick of a top 6 this could be?

Gaudreau - McDavid - Matthews
Larkin - Eichel - Mackinnon

Matthews needs to make this team. He is probably the best sniper available with ridiculous hands in tight. Could you imagine how many goals he'd score off of Gaudreau and McDavid passes?

That 2nd line would be pretty fast . . .
I would put McDavid and Gaudreau on separate lines. Gaudreau is at his best when he can get better match ups and I think opposition would try to shut down McDavid first. Assuming Matthews is on the team I would just switch McDavid and Eichel and go with this:

Larkin - McDavid - Mackinnon (The speed on this line would be unbelievable)
Gaudreau - Eichel - Matthews

The thing is that it's an NHL tournament first and foremost and they can do what they want.

No one is questioning whether the NHL can do it - obviously it can. Saying that something can do something is obviously not a defence of whether it should do something though.

The NHL obviously believes that it is in their interest in promoting their own product to have the 2 non national teams instead of the 7th and 8th best nations in the world.

Good for them. I don't care about the NHL's best interests as I'm not a stakeholder. I also don't put a lot of faith in the NHL having great business sense, but that's far from the point.

If you think that your suggestion has merit please forward it to the NHL.

Obviously the suggested idea is a terrible one - just like the gimmick in this tournament.

This U-23 team is such a stupid idea, let's say in 4 years McDavid is the top Canadian center in the league, would he be held off Team Canada to promote this idiotic team?

That's what they are essentially doing to Team USA by including Gaudreau on this team when he's clearly good enough to be on his national roster.

yep, its such a stupid idea

This team is certainly not a stupid idea. They took the top six countries and creatively added two others. These teams are inclusive and competitive with the lower two national teams, Czech Republic and Finland. Suddenly we have a competitive tournament that features all of the best players in the world.

Theyre going to do a comprehensive review and likely decide that countries should get first crack at the young players. I imagine they will change it up next time and make two leftover world teams of something like under 25 and 25 plus.

Best of all it gives Canadians and Americans (the primary audience) two teams to cheer for and buy tickets for.

It also gives young players a tryout for international experience in key roles without exposing them to the high pressure national teams. It prevents nepotism and should encourage USA and Canada to choose the best players without worrying so much about experience.

Lets be honest, neither NA or Europe will advance very far so why complain so much. Enjoy the fact that they included basically a Hockey's Future team.

The thing about Europe is that they don't have to play against their home team, it makes no sense to go to an international tournament and have to play against your home country.

Although they don't have nearly as strong a roster, hockey isn't predetermined, a game can go either way, why would the NHL put themselves in a position where a gimmick team could win.

It's not just the World Cup, I wouldn't want this in the World Championships either, kind of puts a stain on the national pride part of international tournaments.

I don't get why they ruin team Canada and USA by not letting U-23 players represent their national team. Why couldn't this "U-23 team" just consist of players who didn't make the national team?

Im glad Murray made it. I think i mentioned him 10 times in this thread. But all i got back was "no way, Fucale, Subban" etc etc

That doesn't make any sense, Finland is close to win the gold every time in real best on best. I'd rather take another shot at original tournament rather than this. We don't need gimmick teams so "we can at least beat some one". You are wrong if you think we aren't competitive to play for gold or win any of those real teams in the tournament. Last World Cup, Canada won just barely 3-2 in the Finals against Finland. Same history applies for Olympics.

Defending arguments for those two teams are usually nonsense.

I wonder who the starter will be for this team. Gibson has the most experience at the NHL level, but he also has the worst stats of the 3 goalies. I think Hellebuyck should be the starter (mainly due to his incredible WC last year) with Murray as the backup, I don't think Gibson is as good as people say he is.
Can you post the stats were Gibson has the worst? I'm looking at this season and gibson is 16-9-2 with 4 shutouts. 2.09 GAA .918 SV% and Hellebuyk is 13-11-1 2.33 GAA and .918 SV % 2 shutouts

Maybe not Canada, but for Team USA, Gaudreau is huge. Unless management/coaches honestly did not want Gaudreau on the team, the only other reason he isn't included is because they needed more "name players" for this team.

Roster:

John Gibson, Anaheim Ducks, G
Connor Hellebuyck, Manitoba (AHL), G
Matthew Murray, Pittsburgh Penguins, G
Aaron Ekblad, Florida Panthers, D
Seth Jones, Columbus Blue Jackets, D
Ryan Murray, Columbus Blue Jackets, D
Morgan Rielly, Toronto Maple Leafs, D
Sean Couturier, Philadelphia Flyers, F
Jack Eichel, Buffalo Sabres, F
Johnny Gaudreau, Calgary Flames, F
Dylan Larkin, Detroit Red Wings, F
Nathan MacKinnon, Colorado Avalanche, F
Connor McDavid, Edmonton Oilers, F
J.T. Miller, New York Rangers, F
Sean Monahan, Calgary Flames, F
Brandon Saad, Columbus Blue Jackets, F

You think they are picking players based on how many representatives they have...

I think Jenner will be there and I DO not understand why Miller was there but this logic is backwards.
I dunno. I think they wanna draw as much attention as possible and they should have had at least one player from the NY/NJ area. I just don't see any other explanation.

Jenner adds some physicality, has good hands, and can play anywhere in the lineup. Can also play any wing, so gives the roster some versatility.
And he also scored 22 goals, you know.

4 forwards remain to be named. From: Huberdeau, Galchenyuk, Scheifele, Jenner, Domi, Pageau, Nugent-Hopkins, Matthews.

Hmm. I'd say Jenner and RNH is a must. The remaining two is a question.

JT Miller is a surprise to me, but I can see why he's there.

All I can say is that this team robbed Gaudreau, Larkin & Eichel from team USA...

Agreed.
