I am pretty excited for this tournament. I don't understand people who downplay this. Best on best tourney at time there's no hockey almost anywhere?

Also excited to see Marjamäki as coach, he is one of the best in the world imo

Never been more hyped for a tournament. Interesting how far this team will go. Blue line is the only thing I'm concerned about.

PP unit...

---------Komarov----------------
-----------------------------------
-------Barkov--------------------
-----------------------Granlund--
Laine------------------------------
------Vatanen---------------------

I would likely not mind a system like this.

One of Kari Jalonen's numerous failures was the PP. The role choices for certain players made next to no sense.

I´d switch Granlund and Barkovs starting position, both are great passers but Barkov has a better and harder shot, especially from distance, the idea would be not to let opponents be able to take out Laine, that´s why with Vatanens good passing and decent shot there needs to be the alternative for a good left handed clapper where there is space since it´s 4v3 with Laine out... and if they don´t cover Laine... we have a goal :)

Granlund's spot in my lineup is the playmaker... Barkov is a secondary shooter. Barkov also is much superior to Granlund in physical play which that spot requires.

Barkov as the playmaker is a fair thing to prefer but in that case Granlund should not be on this PP unit at all.

In that case Koivu is a valid option, my thought was more:

---------------Vatanen
Barkov-----------------------Laine

Granlund------Komarov

Where Granlunds role would be more free and leave the screening all on Komarov, Granlund circling the corners and around and behind the net delivering clever passes.

Why do you not consider it best on best?
Best-on-best is an all-national team event. This, obviously, is not.

Also, best-on-best means all participants get to pick from their entire pool of players. USA and Canada can not, because of the YoungStarz team.

Ergo this is not best-on-best. High-level hockey, sure. But not best-on-best.

Good points File.

How many players do you think would have made team Canada and USA from the YoungStarz team?

Of course, I would rather see Finland win Olympic Gold than this tournament.
But on the other hand, I strongly believe that most people (at least on this side of the pond) respect world cup gold over world championship gold.

This hockey is more competitive than the world champs and is the best thing until 2018 Olympic hockey if it actually happens with nhl players.

Honestly, as a hockey fan I think you should be excited to watch this tournament. Finland has its best players and that should count for something.

Canada might have chosen McDavid, but that's about it.

USA is the one really depleted by this farce. Goudreau, Saad and Eichel would all have made it, and maybe Seth Jones as well.

So on the small ice, which team do you honestly has a good chance against Canada?
If USA's team is definitely weaker as a consequence of NAU23, who can step up to the plate?

IHMO, Sweden lacks the forwards. Russia's D is weak.

Hard to say, but I still think it will be USA vs CAN and CAN sweeps in 2.

I could also see Finland winning 3 opening games and facing USA in the semis. But if Fin finishes second and faces Canada its all over :)

And given that USA passed over guys like Kessel, Tyler Johnson, Okposo, Faulk and Shattenkirk (off the top of my head) it's hard to know who would have been chosen.

Who's gonna respect a win that (potentially) comes against a gimmick, a non-national team? I mean, if Finland beats the YoungStarz in the final, would that really feel right and legit?

The answer is of course not. This tournament's tainted. And even if the above scenario doesn't come to pass and the medal round's all NT action, the fact that it could have happened is enough to taint it.

It's exhibition. A tournament that can provide entertainment for those who watch, but in the end of the day, no one cares who wins it. Even those who claim to care now will quickly change their tune if one of the gimmicks makes it to the final. Or come up with feeble excuses to save face.

If Finland manages to finish above Canada, Russia, USA, Sweden, and the Czech Republic they should feel some sort of pride, especially since Finland has never won anything close to a best on best tournament and they probably won't for some time.

Why? Last time World cup was played(and then it wasn't gimmick like this one) Finland steamrolled to finals but it hardly was news in Finland compared to WHC and Olympic success.

Finland has never won a best on best tournament. True

But they certainly have come to close to winning a best on best tournament. Twice. 2-3.

Russia, USA, Sweden, and the Czech Republic >>>> Finishing above those countries is nothing new.
Been there, done that, even finishing above Canada two times in best on best tournaments. Winning it is another story.

Let's see what happens.

Yes, but if Finland had won, you bet your arse it would have been a big deal. DVD collectors sets and all/ Plus a national stamp of the winning goal :)

And this time it won't be a big deal to anybody, because gimmicks.

It'd actually be cruel irony, if Finland can't win a real international best-on-best, but manages to win this.

Beating Sweden would be nice because it would be the first time since 1998. Finland has to beat U24, Sweden, Russia and the USA in the semifinal to advance to the World Cup final. It's doable.

Well done, as a caps fan I feel great joy when we make the final 8. But seriously I would never brag about getting farther than the Pens in 2011 when they have won twice since 2009, so who cares if you finished higher than Canada in one Olympics, you still lost. Like you say winning is another story.

Absolutely, I don't care.

One olympics? Do your homework please.

Are you really bragging about finishing at a higher ranking than Canada without actually winning anything? It seems my point has completely gone over you head.

My point is that Finn fans have seen their national team win against top countries in best on best tournaments in 1998, 2004, 2006, 2010, and 2014. Winning it is what makes the difference.

I'm simply pointing out that Finland finished above Canada in 1998, and 2006 because I'm correcting your mistake.

Yes, that would be quite the irony. But at least if they won it would be on Golden Canadian soil.
Millions of Canadian fans would hear that the second lowest ranked team on paper took the tournie!
It would be great exposure and marketing for Finland.

lol

I think it will be USA vs CAN though in the final.
