God, they should have just announced the whole roster at once and avoided this lunacy.

100% chance both Giroux and Subban are on the team come September.

People said this in 2014 lol. Someone in the team Canada selection group has something out for him.

I didn't think Giroux was a lock in 2014.

Sharp, Marleau, MSL won't be back.

Hall and Giroux will fill two of those spots.

I have no problem with the defense. Those four players were the best four defensemen at Sochi and haven't lost a step. Best part is if one starts to falter, one of the remaining three defensemen left to be named can step up in their place.

Giroux no-showed at the 2013 orientation camp and had a poor start to the 2013-14 NHL season, and shoulders some of the blame for his absence in Sochi. Fences were mended at the 2015 WHC, where Giroux was a key member and leader of a dominant Team Canada.

Vlasic - Doughty was an insanely good pairing in Sochi. Vlasic has only improved since then, and is on pace for 50+ points this year. This is on top of being one of the best (might be THE best) shut down defensemen in the NHL. (Hell, Crosby once said the only other D-man he's faced that is as hard to play against as Vlasic was Lidstrom.) The only surprise I would have had about Vlasic is if he DIDN'T make the team.

They compliment each other so well, Vlasic is the dream partner for Doughty

He in ineligible for Canada in this tournament...

he has to play for team North America.

I know there is a younger team tournament. But I thought if you are good enough you could still play on Team Canada. It's unfortunate, Mcdavid would have fit for bill for our team. Besides it would have been fun seeing him with Crosby and Toews representing the next generation for Canada.

Honestly, I just feel bad for Giroux. He knows he deserves to be on this roster and it must be frustrating for him not to be when he gives 120% at all times and carries this damn Flyers team as much as any player possibly could but gets no respect from team Canada, despite playing for them when called upon.

Although, in my selfish Flyers fan mind, this is kind of better because 1) im not Canadian and couldn't care less about their winning or this entire tournament and 2) if he doesn't make the team then there's 0% chance of fluke injury or something and 3) it could provide some extra motivation for the rest of the year... angry Giroux is the best Giroux.

it's disgusting how underrated Taylor Hall is

He'll very likely be on the final roster.

I doubt Team Canada is just ignoring how well he played on Crosby's wing at the World's, and they sure as hell are not bringing Kunitz.

I'm thinking:

Hall-Crosby-Stamkos
Benn-Seguin-Tavares
Carter-Getzlaf-Perry
Giroux-Toews-Bergeron
Duchene

Keith-Weber
Vlasic-Doughty
Letang-Burns/Subban

Price
Holtby
Crawford

Team Canada's pretty big on handedness and let's be real, how many Canadian LDs out there are better than Vlasic other than Keith? Maybe an argument can be made for one of Brodie, Gio, or Muzzin but that's about it.

I like this first 16 selection. Pretty much what I would choose.

Benn - Getzlaf - Seguin
Marchand - Crosby - Bergeron
Duchene - Giroux - Stamkos
Tavares - Toews - Carter

Perry, Hall

Selections all make total sense.

Vlasic seems to be the "controversial" one but since they are big on LHD and RHD and he is on the team no matter what (as he deserves to be) I think it is nice to give him a bit of a "reward" for past service.

Subban is top 3 for Canadian d-men. No reason he shouldn't be there. Hall and Giroux should be there too.

Meh I'm not surprised. Too many defensive misreads that end up in the back of the net. Can't have that in tight checking games.

People always forget teams often win game 3-2, 2-1 in these tourneys. It's playoff style Hockey. That's why Canada generally takes its best defensive forwards. Guys like Bergeron, Carter, Getzlaf, Toews who maybe aren't elite talents offensively like Giroux or Hall, but they NEVER make bad reads. Put a team of 13 forwards and 7 D that do that and it's no wonder Canada is almost impossible to score on.

Guys like Hall and Giroux are more valuable to their NHL teams because the offense they provide is so essential. But Canada first and foremost wants to be basically perfect defensively. That's why team guys like Carter, Bergeron, Crosby, Toews, Getzlaf are there. That's Canada's M.O., I know HF doesn't like it, but it's not surprising.

Good luck scoring on Holtby/Price when Canada throw out the vast majority of the best two-way players in the world. That's their philosophy.

He will be there.

And to correct you, Subban is a top 3 Canadian RD. They named the top 2 to the team. Though I personally think Subban is better than Weber right now, Weber has pedigree on his side.

Weber also has strong history on his side of stepping his game up for Team Canada and being the number 1 defenseman on the best team in Sochi. Like I said before, the job will be Weber's unless he fails.

That's not the same argument at all, but nice strawman.

Really? The "what have you done for me lately" rule seems to apply in both cases. But let's just leave it to the experts on here to demonstrate their superior hockey knowledge. After all, Canada only dominated the 2014 Olympics and we had a bunch of cry babies whine about that roster as well. Not much has changed since then.
