Giroux's two-way play IS underrated, but doesn't produce as much 5v5 as Toews does. He's a PP specialist, essentially, and I'm confident he'll be named to the final 16 for his skills in that area.

Tbf Giroux has the best two full seasons amongst both players in regards to 5v5 P/60 relative to the league.

When the Flyers had a good transition D he was immense in regards to 5v5 P/60 in 2010-11 and 2011-12... coming top ten both years.

And he is a fantastic PKer. One of the best in the NHL statistically.

Giroux isn't a 200 ft hockey player? So you've never watched him play? Yikes.

Yeah I obviously never watch these players... Yet a few pages back I posted my 16. 15/16 right:yo: and my one mistake was homer putting in TJ Brodie and leaving Crawford off.

He's not bad defensively. But he's no Carter, Bergeron, or other two way guys. Only 6 or 7 top six guys are going. Crosby is a top 6 center. Toews or Getzlaf will be the other top 6. Stamkos, Benn, Seguin and Tavares are the top 6 wingers IMO. Where does that leave Giroux? 13th forward at best IMO. Not surprising IMO that Hall and Giroux are getting passed over for two-way guys.

Final slots:

D
Giordano/Brodie
Burns
Pietrangelo

F
Duchene
O'Reilly
Marchand
Perry

This is my guess as to how it will play out.

For the record, I would have Giroux on my team, but something tells me it won't be the case.

Stamkos-Crosby-Carter
Benn-Seguin-____
Tavares-Toews-Bergeron
____-Getzlaf-_____
_______

Keith-Doughty
Vlasic-Weber
_____-_____
______

Holtby
Crawford
Price (Inj?)/Fleury

7 or 8 more players, I'd imagine.
2RW: Giroux (I hope!)
4LW: Nash
4RW: Perry
Extra forward: Hall (fingers crossed)/Duchene (probable)

3D (L): Giordano
3D (R): Subban
Extra D: Pietrangelo

I think Price is going to be taking this tourney off (just a feeling), letting Holtby steal the show. It's not as if we have a dearth of anything.

The Giroux/Subban salt parade in this thread is hilarious

What do you expect when Giroux has:
more points than everyone named but 3 THIS YEAR
more points than everyone named but 4 over the last 2 years
more points than everyone named over the last 6 years
better on FO than everyone named but 2
Better defensively than everyone but 2/3
Can play as a winger or a C
Outplayed Sid and Stamkos in his WC appearances

Seriously, what more can he do?

Ideal D would probably be:

Keith-Weber
Vlasic-Doughty
Letang-Burns

Give Letang and Burns all the ozone starts and pile up points.

I would be pretty upset if Giroux is left off again. I felt pretty bad for him being snubbed at the Olympics.

Absolute joke.

How this man continues to be left off of Canada's teams is a complete mystery to me.

Giroux should seriously start flinging **** at this point, it is just getting absurd.

he's got nothing to prove at this point, he's shown up to the worlds twice in the last three years and likely has another chance this year, and leads the league in scoring over the last 5 years. Canada either wants him they don't and claude should tell them to delete his phone number and don't bother calling him. He shouldn't have to switch positions, either. He is one of the 4 top canadian centers.

bingo!

He hasn't been left off yet, RELAX.

Giroux is a two-way guy.

How are people seriously questioning Getzlaf? I'm a Ducks fan so I would have a bias, but all he has done though over the last few years is be an elite player in the NHL aside from 2 months of this season, and if there was any questions I would say his play since his surgery has answered those leading the league in points in February. Not to mention the amount of gold he has been a part of on Team Canada. Seriously how is his selection not obvious? I actually would like someone's opinion.

Vlasic - Doughty was an insanely good pairing in Sochi. Vlasic has only improved since then, and is on pace for 50+ points this year. This is on top of being one of the best (might be THE best) shut down defensemen in the NHL. (Hell, Crosby once said the only other D-man he's faced that is as hard to play against as Vlasic was Lidstrom.) The only surprise I would have had about Vlasic is if he DIDN'T make the team.

Hmm, judging from this thread and the players this really will be a meh tournament. Remember Sochi when there were threads here filling up and simultaneously threads on all the canadian team boards wrathfully complaining about some obscure Canadian minister of something or another making a nice platitude ladden speech. Here we are on page 13 on a thread starting days back. I watched the Swedish announcement and while toeing the party line, it was kinda obvious that Henrik Lundqvist is not exactly brimming with enthusiasm. I don't think there will be a 'process of mourning' for Hall and even Seguin at a direct question admitted he hadn't really followed the team seletion, unlike the Olympics where he was obviously very disappointed at not getting a call.

Also hilariously, Lundqvist spoke mostly of how great it always is to represent your country, and playing with the other Swedes on the national team. I don't think he meant to but it was an obvious reference to how Team Europe and the Under 24 really have nothing to play for. Thrown together players that will never play as a team ever again.

He used to play on a line with Jeff Carter... and was as good defensively as him back then. (he actually pushed Carter to wing...)

Heck, look at Carter vs Giroux in regards to CF% rel and CA/60 rel in the last few years... Giroux better in both stats, while playing more Dzone starts, less Ozone starts and tougher QoC!

His CF% rel over the last 3 years is better than every forward named to this roster not called Bergeron... and he plays tougher minutes than a lot of them.

The same Carter who is a possession sink [CF% rel:, -3.8] relative to the team? The same Carter who is receiving 59.5% OZS against relatively weak competition [QoC: -0.371]? The same Carter who is a sub-50% on the face-off dot this year? The same Carter who had value as a sniper and is barely on pace for 20 goals this year?

'15-16 Carter is a disaster in comparison to any previous year.

There's room on the roster for both Giroux and Carter.

Giroux will be on the roster.

Nash, Marleau, Sharp, MSL won't be back.

He'll take one of their spots.

Maybe I'm just jaded...

But I was assured Carter would make this roster. Just as I'm assured Nash will make this roster. It pays to play for Canada every time you're called*. It's not as if they're awful. Nobody's putting Luke Gazdic on the roster.

*Unless you're Giroux.

Carter was a surprise, especially since they could have waited until his playoff performance to see how he did.

A really interesting question is, assuming they stick with the same LD-RD thing that they have in the past, is who locks on RD on the 3rd pairing: better PMD in Subban, or better 2 way guy in Pietrangelo.

IMO the final LD spot is easily Brodie or Giordano whoever plays better from here out. Looking like Brodie so far.

Giroux needs to just say **** it with TC, not much more he can do but they have a grudge for some reason. Really hope he tells them to get lost come World Championship time.

Yeah not like Getzlaf has been a big part of Team Canada so far and is back to being dominant

Definitely a no brainer there over Giroux

If by "no brianer" you mean only someone with no brain would make that choice then absolutely.

Giroux is better than Getzlaf, this year and in recent years.

You're right, he's no Carter, he's on a whole other level than Carter. Better all around, not debatable. Bergeron is definitely better defensively though, I never argued that or even mentioned him.

Carter was the leading scoring fwd in Sochi. His inclusion did not surprise me. He has always played well for us Internationally.

Carter, Bergeron and Crosby were all part of 2 of our best International teams as teammates and all 3 are Cup winners to boot.
