Thank you for the responses, I've never watched this tournament before and am trying to get into it this year. I want to have a better understanding of how it works, the significance, and the popularity
It's as sandog said but also I think it's part perception that other teams have more stars. Plenty Finns also turned down the WC you just don't hear about it because we're american. TT, Korpikoski, Joel Armia (RFA not a problem), Haula, Rask has never showed out, Jokipakka, Risto is an RFA I think, Sami Vatanen never shows out anymore, so I think it's part perception that other teams are playing real star rosters, they got just as many fill ins as the rest of us. The US is unique in sending college age prospects but as far as star power I mean each team has just a few.How do other countries differ and why do they have more star players?

Problem is that the top 3 are all RFAs (if I'm not mistaken) with almost 100% contract guarantee and zero added bonus for not playing. There are actually a couple RFAs in the tournament, so as a technicality they're awaiting a contract but in reality that's not an issue. First example comes to mind is Marek Hrivik was planning to play before the whole Ciger issue.Armia, Vatman, Ristolainen are waiting/doing contracts this summer.
Teräväinen has a shoulder injury. Haula has a hip injury (in NHL IR during playoff start). Jokipakka has a "hip malady".
Korpikoski is not necessarily better than Markus Granlund, who was dropped from the team due to not being good enough.
So only MIA is Rask, the rest of the Finns are playing despite of the upcoming NHL circus in September.

I've been a long time advocate for your call-up haha
i am sure this has been answered already at some point but is seth jones injured or something?
Surprised to see he isn't going back, he is such a dominant d-man on international ice.
Europeans just like the tournament more. You go around Finland and Russia and everybody is talking about it. Obviously that trickles down and players are into it. North Americans aren't really for a variety of reasons
a lot of it is the IIHF's own doing and its history as it relates to N. American (NHL). But no need to beat that dead horse. All OT.
I was never a "fan" of the tournament until I lived in Europe for those 7 years and had the opportunity to go to 3 + the Spengler Cup, which by the way exceeds anything this IIHF tournament has to offer in terms of fan experience, but I digress...
and while I'm still not a "true fan" of the tournament, I'm not nearly as dismissive of it as I was before the expat experience. I follow it, I watch the games, not just Canada games, I enjoy it as an entertaining distraction and warm-up to that evening's NHL playoff action.

Well you haven't been able to prove that in light of what I've said. Idk if you know but a RFA is not looking at a long contract or a lucrative one because teams just have to give is a "qualifying offer" and team's don't overpay you to be nice...Yes there is. If you get injured badly enough, your contract will suck.
Most common reason for skipping the tournament is RFA/UFA years, especially if you are looking at a long contract.
Only "no show" is Rask. The rest are all there.
vs. Belarus, May 7Anyone have their schedule?

...and then you didn't read about TT...you would like to believe it's just rask, but seems more like it's just not a priority to these guys.
