Thank you for the responses, I've never watched this tournament before and am trying to get into it this year. I want to have a better understanding of how it works, the significance, and the popularity

How do other countries differ and why do they have more star players?
It's as sandog said but also I think it's part perception that other teams have more stars. Plenty Finns also turned down the WC you just don't hear about it because we're american. TT, Korpikoski, Joel Armia (RFA not a problem), Haula, Rask has never showed out, Jokipakka, Risto is an RFA I think, Sami Vatanen never shows out anymore, so I think it's part perception that other teams are playing real star rosters, they got just as many fill ins as the rest of us. The US is unique in sending college age prospects but as far as star power I mean each team has just a few.

Armia, Vatman, Ristolainen are waiting/doing contracts this summer.

Teräväinen has a shoulder injury. Haula has a hip injury (in NHL IR during playoff start). Jokipakka has a "hip malady".

Korpikoski is not necessarily better than Markus Granlund, who was dropped from the team due to not being good enough.

So only MIA is Rask, the rest of the Finns are playing despite of the upcoming NHL circus in September.

Problem is that the top 3 are all RFAs (if I'm not mistaken) with almost 100% contract guarantee and zero added bonus for not playing. There are actually a couple RFAs in the tournament, so as a technicality they're awaiting a contract but in reality that's not an issue. First example comes to mind is Marek Hrivik was planning to play before the whole Ciger issue.

Lol, I think most would agree that Korpikorski is significantly better than Granlund even playing on an awful team. TT was too injured to play in the May WC, but healthy enough to play through it in the playoffs...you get the jist

Europeans just like the tournament more. You go around Finland and Russia and everybody is talking about it. Obviously that trickles down and players are into it. North Americans aren't really for a variety of reasons

a lot of it is the IIHF's own doing and its history as it relates to N. American (NHL). But no need to beat that dead horse. All OT.

I was never a "fan" of the tournament until I lived in Europe for those 7 years and had the opportunity to go to 3 + the Spengler Cup, which by the way exceeds anything this IIHF tournament has to offer in terms of fan experience, but I digress...

and while I'm still not a "true fan" of the tournament, I'm not nearly as dismissive of it as I was before the expat experience. I follow it, I watch the games, not just Canada games, I enjoy it as an entertaining distraction and warm-up to that evening's NHL playoff action.

Hilariously the organizers prominently feature an American fan in a Patrick Kane jersey on the advertisements.

This. Exactly.

This is a tough tournament to love. But I absolutely look forward to getting home from work today and watching the DVR'd game as a warm up for the Tampa game. Thats exactly how I view this tourney.

US lines

Maroon - Matthews - Schroeder
Foligno - Larkin - Hinostroza
Connor - Compher - Motte
Wood - Hendricks - Fasching
Vatrano

Hanifin - Wideman
McCabe - Skjei
Warsofsky - Murphy
Santini

Kinkaid
Condon

Did a lot of players not elect to go? This Team USA might get best by Belarus . That's an extremely thin lineup.

Vatrano will likely make his way onto that Larkin very quickly. Probably sticks there in 2 more games at the most. Gonna be interesting to see how that CCM line does. Connor was pretty invisible against Finland in the exhibition game, hopefully he plays a lot better today

Yes there is. If you get injured badly enough, your contract will suck.

Most common reason for skipping the tournament is RFA/UFA years, especially if you are looking at a long contract.

Only "no show" is Rask. The rest are all there.

Now that is some bad material...

CCM line needs to take different angles on the forecheck on the bigger ice. Chasing the play quite a bit but I like there speed through the neutral zone. That has iced the puck a few times so they need to tighten up their passing.

And get Kinkaid out!

Well you haven't been able to prove that in light of what I've said. Idk if you know but a RFA is not looking at a long contract or a lucrative one because teams just have to give is a "qualifying offer" and team's don't overpay you to be nice...

...and then you didn't read about TT...you would like to believe it's just rask, but seems more like it's just not a priority to these guys.

I don't mind this US team. Good for the US management to give chances to players to represent their team internationally. A lot of their top players are going to play in World Championship so it makes sense to give tier 2 and young players chance to showcase themselves

Pushing agenda, are we? Rask is MIA. The rest are reasonably exempt.

Finnish players go there for fun. The most important hockey of the year in Finland. Hopefully we can win all 3 IIHF golds this year. Would be great.

Thought Skjei looked pretty solid, except for on the Duchene goal. Didn't notice anything else too out of place.

Pretty terrible game, just totally out matched, would love to see the possession #'s.
