Why isn't Jack Eichel on the team? Galchenyuk? Palmieri? There are so many quality, young American hockey players that are not on playoff teams that I would think are itching for the chance to play more hockey. The roster choices seem rather poor, but not like you can force anyone to play.

Eichel wanted a break. Galchenyuk has a broken finger. Palmieri is an RFA.

Panarin says that Patrick Kane "thinking" about his travel to World Championship 2016. so maybe we will see #88 on this tournament. What do you think about this? Is It possible?

I don't feel like Planet Hockey was attacking Americans at all, just the mindset that is rampant in this country (and Canada) that this tournament isn't worth sending any better players to. My only disagreement with that is that the only people who should be faulted for our rosters are the players who decide not to show up.

If only USA Hockey had some balls, they would be barred from ever playing at the Olympics too. But then people would ***** and moan that the Olympic roster doesn't have all the best players. Boo-****ing-hoo. And this is why I agree with him that North American hockey fans are annoying.

So which particular players, that skipped this year, do you have a problem with ?

Is being a RFA/UFA not an excuse in your mind ?

The players wife having a child or being pregnant ?

Eichel not wanting to participate should warrant exclusion to future Olympics, WHC and World Cups ?

Explain how Dale Tallon and Dean Lombardi should go about that.

Highly doubtful Kane comes and I wouldn't blame him if he didn't but his presence would be an absolute game changer. I can't remember a USA superstar ever coming, let alone the guy who will win the MVP award in the NHL. It would cause a top heavy line but I'd load up with a Larkin-Matthews-Kane top line and it would destroy everyone in this tournament. Highly unlikely it's even a remote possibility but man, it would be incredibly fun

Good post. Really annoying when people hate on this tournament for no reason. If it doesn't appeal to you, fine, don't watch it. But I'd say that says more about you than it does the tournament. National teams are not all-star teams. It shouldn't matter who is on your roster. The World Championships are a great event with great history, and it's an honor to play in them (or should be anyway, but primadonna NHL players don't always act nobly).

I would cheer for our boys if they were sending the Arkansas High School Selects to represent us. I think the only people that actually care who they have on their roster are people that need a nationalist dick-measuring contest to feel superior over others. It's a HOCKEY TOURNAMENT. Sit back, grab a beer, and enjoy some ****ing hockey.

Thanks!

I certainly don't mean to give the wrong impression, I'd love to see Team USA win the WC one of these years. It's the only way the media here would ever cover it. One step closer to hosting someday.

I'm probably selfish, but IMO if you want to see a really kick-butt WC, pick a non-Olympic year and host that bad boy in Michigan or Minnesota starting in mid-May. Probably won't happen as long as the NHL considers the IIHF a thorn in its side, but maybe someday.

Trash talk 101 - pick examples that downplay the opposition. Sure, those 3 teams include a lot of KHL players. But for instance the Kazzys are built around 1 KHL team that missed the playoffs this season & has won 1 playoff series in 5 or 6 years.

Imagine if the United States could only pick from players signed to one expansion NHL team & farm system. Americans would consider the WC to be an even bigger dumb joke that doesn't matter...because the USA would lose even more often than they already do.

In contrast, Russia, Czech Republic, Sweden, Switzerland all come with a majority of European pros in 2016. If the US beats all of those teams for the next 3 or 4 WC's consistently, then THAT would prove your point. Not beating a losing KHL team playing essentially by itself with a team selected from many NHL teams.

Team USA has won a grand total of 2 (silver) Olympic medals since the Miracle On Ice team in 1980. They achieved 1 silver in 5 tries at the Canada Cup, usually finishing in the low half of the field.

The last time Team USA won the World Championship was in 1933. They have a grand total of 4 (all bronze) medals at the WC since the mid-1960s. That's 4 medals in 50 years.

There must be some other IIHF tournaments going on that I'm not aware of, in which Team USA dominates everybody. Whenever they decide to try hard, of course.

I didn't say the Canadians always win or are always a gold medal favorite. I said they always send a fine team and are a perennial contender. The 2016 contingent is young, but they have strong NHL goaltending and a lot of big mean skaters who could dominate the tournament. They play to win every year, and their media acknowledges the value of the WC.

The Americans, by contrast, have sent college kids & minor league rookies including an 18 year-old from the Swiss league. At some point, Greg Wyshinski will write his yearly bathroom-scrawl making fun of the IIHF, and saying the Americans lost to so-and-so because our superior-but-bored players were looking at Russian smut mags on the bench or whatever. That train is never late.

So please do not attempt to say these 2 countries are anywhere close in the way they approach the WC.

Who is looking at an outlier now? This is a World Cup year, an Olympic Qualification year for a bunch of teams. Of course not everyone is going to have every ballyhooed superstar from their country playing in this WC.

But what % of the "best" players in the NHL play in the Stanley Cup final? Are a majority of the absolutely most talented skaters in the league playing in that series? No? Then that is a "Grade B" event too. And the Super Bowl is grade B because it's not like most of the Pro Bowl selected players are in that. And the College Football Playoff and the Frozen Four are "C" events because a lot of those players won't even make it to the pros. Got it.

Finally, your statement that Finland, Sweden, Russia etc. just waltz some local fan favorites out for the WC & don't really care about winning just could not be more incorrect. That's the American hockey myopia in full effect right there. Just b/c the Americans blow off the WC as an excuse-fest/training exercise doesn't mean the rest of the world does too. Seriously, it's hard to find words to really even reply to that. I'm sorry you are so misinformed.
1. The goal is player development, so the goal isn't medals the goal is to be successful enough. We don't need to send more than college students to be successful enough so we don't, we make the playoffs yearly anyways, if we brought home the gold maybe 3 people would be excited, there is no difference.
2. The statistical track record I'm speaking of are against your "KHL" teams like Latvia and Kazakhstan but also others like Germany, France, Austria, they might beat us once in a few years but we beat them enough to where it doesn't matter. Please read in context. I've never heard the US give the " we weren't trying" excuse after losing to Canada. We would only say that against a team we are FAVORED to win against. If you are incapable of understanding context then I cannot help you.
3. They're sending prospects for prospect development too, their prospects are just better, and sometimes older, do you have a problem with that?

4. The funny thing is that you don't even check the facts before giving lip. Funnier thing, I actually did. In the past 4 years, Sweden (75 NHLers) has only sent more than 6 NHLers 1 time. In the past 8 years, they've only sent more than 8 NHLers all of 2 times. We're sending 13. They've sent as many as that 1 time in the last 8 years and here you are whining it up. Same exact number with the Czech Republic (34 NHLers), 2 teams with more than 8 NHLers in 8 years, not to mention they invited CHL players to the tournament too, #staymadabby.

This for all those who think that Americans and American athletes specifically are just less patriotic. Are you gonna hate on those Swedish Divas who aren't showing out at the WHC? Come on, don't just hate on the states, are you gonna hate on the Czech Divas not showing out to the WHC? Never once in the past 8 years has the Finnish team (30 NHLers) had more than 8 NHLers, only once more than 6. Come on, keep bringing the hate, tell me about those dang Finnish Diva NHLers. Zdeno Chara has been to 2 WCs in the last 11 seasons, come on, where's the hate now? Come on and bring it on, what a primadonna that Chara, and recently it's been nothing to do with no playoffs either. Forgive, wait no, don't forgive that arrogant Marian Hossa for going to one WC in the last 9 years. No excuses right, not for a prestigious tournament like this. Come on bro, since we gotta hate, let's hate everyone. Why they just gotta be American? Tomas Zaborsky already quit the WC cause he stated he don't care, let's give him some hate too. Those federations send AHLers all the time, who are Ville Pokka and Esa Lindell anyways. And guess what, all those cats who don't go to the WHC are going to the World Cup or want to. Come on, keep giving lip while you got no stats.

Finally, you're trying to confuse people on something real simple. Stanley Cup, Super Bowl, those are CLUB FINALS. Those feature the best each CLUB has to offer. Olympics, WHC, World Cup, those are supposed to be NATIONAL FINALS. They should feature the best players each NATION has. The WC is the National equivalent of it we were to hold the Stanley Cup Club tournament between (for example) Dallas and Pittsburgh but Dallas didn't play Seguin, Benn, Eakin, Klingberg, etc. and Pittsburgh didn't play Crosby, Malkin, Letang, Kessel, Hornqvist, Kunitz. That would be a B grade CLUB FINAL. WC is a B grade NATIONAL FINAL.

omg please jesus.

We get to open up the tournament against the defending champions. Awesome.

Schedule is based on IIHF world ranking.

USA is 5th this year. CAN is 1st. RUS is 2nd and playing CZE 6th.

Last year a USA was 6th and played Finland (2nd). Sweden was 1st and played the 5th (CZE).
