Misha Donskov he Russian ?

born and raised in Montreal. played college hockey in the U.S. and then some lower divisions in Europe for a few years. He retired from hockey and started coaching in the Ontario Hockey League.

obviously he has family roots that go back to Russia/Ukraine or the general vicinity.

In my opinion, one of Skinner/J.Staal makes it, at best.

The way I see it:

  • Connor McDavid, Taylor Hall, Ryan O'Reilly, Mark Scheifele, Matt Duchene, Sean Monahan, Brendan Gallagher are all likely to be on the team, at least that is my feeling about this.

  • Stone will definitely be there if he's healthy. The same applies to MacKinnon, I don't see him refusing an invitation if healthy.
  • Boone Jenner is coming from a 30-goal season, and is definitely going to be on HC radar
  • Jordan Eberle is a maybe for me, but I'm more of an opinion that he will go
  • Brad Marchand is a lock to be on the team imo if the Boston aren't making the playoffs. He's clearly among the players battling for a World Cup spot, Hockey Canada will definitely ask him and in that case, he will almost 100% say yes.
All in all, that's 12 forwards. In this situation, there might not be even a room for one of Skinner/Staal, let alone both, if we add someone from the playoffs, which is very likely imo.

That's valid... there are many options if we assume that most people agree to participate.

Cameron from Ottawa and Yeo from Minny I take it?

Not a fan of Skinner, I'd rather take Ennis again or have Gallagher. To have all 3 seems redundant.

Ennis has been hurt this year. I agree that he and Skinner have similar roles. Gallagher is a bit different though.

assistant coaches were named. Cameron. not a fan. Yeo. indifferent. and Hockey Canada's analytics guru Misha Donskov. also not a fan.. Scott Salmond's inside stool pigeon.

overall, not liking the way this is taking shape.

No need to have Cameron back after the 2011 WJC.

There has been some speculation over on this side of the pond that due to the World Cup some key players who are available wont head to Russia this year

I certainly wouldn't expect any Canadian that has already been named to the Canadian roster to participate in this tournament.

Interesting. The quotes seem to strongly imply that Giordano won't go. Somewhat surprising that the author states that "sources" indicate that Brodie is leaning toward declining the invitation as well. Pretty inexcusable. His speculation with regard to Monahan (suggesting that he may not go because of his contract situation) doesn't strike me as accurate given that Monahan is still restricted.

On a more positive note, Dreger is saying that McDavid and Rielly are expected to play for Canada.

I suspect that would apply more to Canadian and American players than Europeans.

Russians would be especially eager to play given that they're hosting.

Not at all surprising as guys we just assume are going will have reasons they don't want to go. Everyone can complain all they want, but guys will want to stay home to be with their families.

Well, so much for Treliving influencing Giordano/Brodie's decision. all for naught. Oh well, at least the baseball season has started with a bang. 3 games in and already excitement, intrigue and controversy. So, I'm ready to pull the curtain on this hockey season this year, depending of course what San Jose does in the 1st rd. My hockey season will probably end there.

I suspect next year, if we are in the Paris group, more players of note will accept the invite, under influence from their wives of course with the prospect of a 3 week spring shopping spree in Paris. The ironic thing is, St. Petersburg is by far a better and more interesting place to spend 3 weeks. You'd have to pay me a pretty penny to spend 1 day in Paris, forget 3 weeks. but perception is reality.

It looks pretty bad on Treliving if he can't get his top two defencemen to go, especially with one still quite young and the other professing an interest in the upcoming World Cup (while basically acknowledging that participation in this tournament can help make it to that tournament). If those two refuse, I wouldn't be surprise to see Hamilton get the call from his GM. I don't know if he would accept, and I don't know whether h would be a good or bad edition.

McDavid should bail on this well. I can buy his excuse more than I can Monahan or Brodie.

sorry, I sustained a rather significant injury, missed a considerable amount of time, thus I need the full summer to rest, recover and prepare for that ridiculous September contrived, pre-season exhibition gimmicky team.

See you next year in Paris. maybe!

Well this is pretty dissapointing to say the least, we have a crown to defend here and after such a great performance last year I thought guys would really want to step up to back last year up.

I guess I was wrong. Have we gotten a definate no on Monahan yet? He's got zero excuse.

Brodie and Monahan are not definitive refusals. The author just speculated on Monahan and said that he heard rumours about Brodie.

Montreal shut down Subban for the rest of the year. Pretty good chance we won't get Brodie, Gio, or Subban now.

So the only 2 players that I have heard so far as basically being for sure are Reilly and Mcdavid.

I guess it's still a little early though.

Most of these guys would go if it's Prague, Paris, Stockholm, etc. Family vacation for the wifey and children and you get to spend time with them there also.

Hockey players are pretty stupid in general, they probably believe Western World propaganda and think their lives are in danger in Russia. Heavily admire the players that will go and have a) Have a life experience b) Play Hockey. They'll get to see pretty amazing things whilst there, would be cool to see the Victory Day parade.

Russia is one of the most beautiful countries in the world
In Russia, now everything is perfectly safe

Tell that to the Americans and Western Media, they'll tell you to go to one of their cities instead lol.

Sochi was the most dangerous place in the World apparently. No one should go, your life was compromised.

It was interesting being in Sochi, because Canadians seemed to outnumber any other country in terms of travelers. I don't think I met many young Americans at all whereas many Canadians were within that ''youth'' group from what it looked like.

Anyways, these players play in the same cities year in and year out, must be so boring going to some of those cities, to get a chance to go to Russia during this time of year is pretty cool for those who go. McDavid is lucky, got to see Sochi, and now he'll be there again.

I was in Sochi.
It is a quiet and peaceful city

I think Kadri will make the world championship team.
He is playing great hockey now against other teams top lines

I am not really concerned about this team and we really shouldn't be. It will be good team anyway. Even going without Giordano and Brodie, which is still unofficial and they haven't made the final decision yet, the team still has the potential matching the last year's team. At the end, I believe the offence will be strong and the D should be on a very good level even without the Calgary boys.

I teach Russian here in Canada at a high school and have travelled to Saint-Petersburg with my students over a dozen times since 2000. The students love the city and parents always say it is a positive life changing experience for them. I can't imagine the Canadian players with their young families would feel any different.

I will be heading over to Saint Petersburg to watch these games with my young family and will be spending a pretty coin to do so. I can't imagine these players would pass up an all expenses trip to the cultural capital of Russia for a few weeks. It is not called the Venice of the North for nothing.

The Western media certainly has an axe to grind against the current political establishment in Russia so they will write and show all sorts of nonsense about the country in general. But one trip to discover for yourself will dispell these erroneous notions. Perhaps a chat with the Russian in the stall next to them in the NHL dressing room they occupy will help with this also.

And oh yes, tell the wives there is more than enough high end shopping to keep them going for a few weeks. They can take a tip or two from the Russian women while they are there. They actually will have a hard time keeping up.
