Team that won last year was obviously a tight knit team in the locker room...guys had so much fun.

I hope we don't see Subban in the mix for this team, we don't need his antics...

Im not so sure he would be in top 6 anyways....

I dare say that Subban would make any top six in the World Championships.

I do not understand Subban will not go to the World Championship?

He may be more injured than we initially thought. No way to know if he goes though. He seems to want to.

What's so difficult to understand? He hasn't played a game since March 10 due to injury. If he finishes the season on the IR, then he doesn't go. It's that simple. The tournament is not that important to risk further injury. If he gets medical clearance and wants to go, then super. if not, then we have a plethora of other qualified defensemen to fill in.

If Subban was Russian, he would go to the WorldChamp, even with this status trauma.
Our Malkin is going to go to the WorldChump. His to the playoffs will add to the team

Good for you and good for Malkin. but with only 3 or 4 elite centers in the country, and once you get beyond them, Russia would have a difficult time beating Team Poland. So, perhaps therein lies the reason for Malkin's commitment. I repeat, this tournament is not all that important to Canadians, we have other players to fill in should Subban not get medical clearance...you don't have to understand it, just accept it for what it is and move on.

I didn't notice Friedman's column earlier in the week. He says that Subban was wearing a knee brace before he injured his neck. Unless he returns before the season ends, I'll be surprised to see him at this tournament.

That's a very good news, regarding Taylor Hall. This definitely indicates we could see players like Duchene, Giordano, Brodie, O'Reilly, or also D.Hamilton, Jenner, Nugent-Hopkins, Scheifele, who are definitely on the watch-list for Team NA. Nothing is confirmed, so let's wait for the official announcement, but it looks promising.

always love Friedman's 30 thoughts, but I'm not thrilled about Oates being a 'special skills coach'.

And RNH should sit this one out. He's just coming back from injury, didn't have a particularly good season...I don't care that there's a spot on Team Young Gunz for the NHL pre-season exhibition tournament up for grabs. I hope we can come up with better.

Better than guys spending their whole summers getting bigger with Gary Roberts.

I agree that he should just sit out. He's been injured lately, and between McDavid/Monahan/O'Reilly the centre positions are already taken care of. There's also no reason for Hockey Canada to do anything to further support the Young Gunz. Sadly Renney already took care of that.

I am guessing that these players from (for all intents and purposes) eliminated teams will receive the initial consideration from Hockey Canada:

McDavid, Hall, Eberle, Monahan, O'Reilly, MacKinnon and Duchene (health permitting) Skinner, Jenner, Scheifele, Stone (health permitting) Reinhart, Domi, Henrique, Gallagher

Giordano, Brodie, Hamilton, Subban (health permitting) Barrie, Tanev, Rielly, Murray

I am guessing that we will see most of these players, plus some first round exits and some lesser players who replace the above when some of them inevitably refuse to attend. It's a solid pool though.

That's not what Gary Roberts is all about...and I don't think Oates has anything of value to offer more than his opinion that players should play on their strong side.

I've listened to Oates, and he has nothing particularly insightful to offer or to teach.

Now it all sort of makes sense to me, some the troubles Stamkos has been experiencing could be a result of too much coaching and information overload. Stamkos is not a high hockey IQ play making center... he's a by instinct give me the puck goal scoring center. Stamkos needs to simplify his game more than anything else.

Stamkos looks like he has a few issues. First is the leg injury. He was playing his best hockey prior to breaking his leg and he simply isn't as quick now. Second is the way he's been trying to play, setting people up instead of just entering the zone with speed and shooting or moving to the right spots. Third is Jon Cooper's player usage. Fourth is the lack of evolution in his game. He hasn't added a thing of note to his game since 2010. Training with Roberts isn't going to add any creativity or new elements to his game. Other top players have this issue as well, but it has nothing to do with this tournament.

Anyway, Tampa is toast in the 1st. rd., but really not much to offer Team Canada for this year's tournament.

Now that Boston's season looks to be just about over, what about a Marchand Bergeron Stone line? Was it last year or the year before Bergeron asked to go but Hockey Canada's answer was, "thanks, but we are going younger". Unlikely he goes given he has the scam of a tournament to play in September....but you never know.

Haven't heard the latest on Stone since he got crushed in a game last week. what's his status?

I believe it was last year, but it wasn't that Bergeron asked - Bergeron claimed that Hockey Canada never approached him and the reason was that it was looking to go younger. Seems feasible, and he sort of implied that he had interest in going. Bergeron has nothing to prove at this tournament. If he really wants to go that's nice, but I am not expecting him and I certainly wouldn't hold it against him if he didn't go. His presence would likely do Marchand a solid and get Hockey Canada considering a Marchand Crosby Bergeron line in the future.

The only player that I recall hearing of who asked to go and was told no was Spezza. It's been said that Tavares has been ready to go but Hockey Canada didn't have any spots, but Spezza was straight up told no after reaching out to Hockey Canada. I think it was 2012.

Ya, I recall that. I've never really been a big Spezza fan, but the respect meter for him went up last year that he even bothered to answer the call and agreed to go. but maybe he initiated the call again and this time different group of GMs/coaches saw things differently. I think he was 3rd in league scoring that year when they told him, thanks, but no thanks. I know I would have held a grudge for a while.

I'm sure a lot of youngsters will relish the chance to represent their country before having to represent their continental age group in Sept.

Yes Spezza would be justified in being angry. He also admitted to being surprised when he wasn't even invited to Hockey Canada's summer camp prior to the 2014 Olympics. I believe that having his GM in Dallas (Nill) involved likely played a role in his attendance last year. I was glad for Spezza though, he's been a good soldier for Hockey Canada and had never won anything.

I recall last year in an interview following the gold medal game Ekblad was talking about how happy he was and how much he loved representing his country. I'm sure he's just as thrilled to represent an age group from his continent though.

Our Malkin is going to go to the WorldChump. His to the playoffs will add to the team

I have no doubt that if Subban is at least a little bit free to go he will go.
