almost. except for a Rick Nash puck over the glass penalty. but no biggie, I was in the arena in Moscow in '07 when he delivered the gold. It's all good.

One of my favourite goals of all time. How the ref didn't have his hand up for a holding penalty on that play still baffles me.

It is one of those plays that I can remember being so angry and then a split second later being over the moon.

Can you imagine if he had not scored and Canada went on to lose that game?.

Finnish fans would still have to be somehow defending the win today. And it would take some awfully hard twisting around to defend it.

Thankfully Nash saved us from all that.

Canada would have been more hungry for the gold in '08.

We were close in 2008 as well.

At least 2008 (and 2009) convinced the Russians (and Bykov) that they had finally developed a playing style for their relatively weak defensemen to handle Canada's forwards. That misplaced confidence lead to the rout in the quarter-finals of the 2010 Olympics when Russia learned that having all the biggest, fastest, and most-skilled Canadian forwards on one team does make a difference.

Great point, it made them so overconfident, not just the coaches but the fans too!!. It was a tremendous trojan horse.

After that game they knew exactly how we felt after game 1 of the Summit Series.

Both countries sure have felt some pain over some pretty heavy arrogance.

The same thing seems to be happening with them and the continued success at the World Championship even though no other country sends nearly as high a proportion of its best. Leading up to 2010 it was repeated that the Canadian team at the 2008 World Championships was essentially Canada's best team as if it was an irrefutable fact.

This team will be far from the best possible, but there is a lot of potential. The defence projects very well and McDavid could put up a special tournament. There's a lot to look forward to this year.

1st round exit.

My projected line up:

Taylor Hall - Connor McDavid - Nathan MacKinnon
Mark Scheifele - Matt Duchene - Jordan Eberle
Ryan O'Reilly - Sean Monahan - Mark Stone
Boone Jenner - Adam Henrique - Brendan Gallagher
Max Domi / Nazem Kadri

Mark Giordano - T.J. Brodie
Chris Tanev - P.K. Subban
Tyson Barrie - Morgan Rielly
Dougie Hamilton

Cam Talbot
Mike Smith

Mac and Duchene will be questionable with injuries, same with Gallagher.

I really doubt Gio goes, Brodie hopefully does.

Or the tremendous scouting they did before and during the tournament. Leading up to the infamous 1/4 matchup, the Russian assistant coach was asked by a Canadian sports writer about Doughty, specifically how are you game planning for Doughty? To which the coach responded in a rather biting tone, "WHO? Never heard of him!"

Gio has yet to play a game with the A team, and as much as I dislike the World Cup format, it's the A team that will be there, he's on the wrong side of 30, and if playing in that event with those players is important to him, he better answer his phone when Hockey Canada calls in about 10 days and get over to St. Petersburg.

unless of course he's injured...then rest and recoup.

Bykov never not looking NHL matches!
It is logical that he knew nothing about Doughty

I'm sure they would have but it would have been scant consolation for the rip job that almost occurred.

Would have been a travesty.
I don't remember much from that game, I was left with the impression Finland didn't start to play until the 3rd period. Taking out Russia in the semifinal was the biggest surprise in that tournament.

As much as I know Prague is a great place, I am not sure how much that helped get us players last year either. Prague and it's charms really isn't all that well known to many Canadians and even less to hockey player Canadians, who do not tend to be the most well rounded individuals if you know what I mean. You would be surprised at how little it is seen as a "place I have to go to" by traveling Canadians.

The average Canadian with some bucks to go do some traveling are still thinking sandy beaches in Mexico and hot spots in the U.S such as New York,Florida,Vegas and the like. And of course places like Paris, Athens, etc too if you really have the bucks.

Prague is not really on the radar(if they have even heard of it, i'm serious!!)

I bet if one of our players told his wife or girlfriend that he was going to play for Team Canada in Prague and would she like to come the first thing out of her mouth was probably...."Prague, wheres that?"

The average Canadian is still fairly thick when it comes to it's cultural cosmopolitanism.

Seems to me that players who are considering participation on WC for team Canada bit know about destinations and it might have some role in their decisions. I might be wrong but isn't it true that even team Canada has been trying to make it interesting for players? At least i got this feeling from last WC interviews with canadian players...Some czech players could inform them as well... I remember specifically Crosby who spent on week in his friend's house in CZ about 10 years ago. So I would say it was easier for him to decide to go where he knows it than to somewhere else....And when Crosby is comming, who is entitled to say "no" :)

Not with one of the best Canadian payers on an opposing team due to the rules of the tournament.

Johansen and Couture.

regardless, Gio, if healthy, has to chip and get his ass over there. When did he last play in this tournament, when he spent that year in the KHL? That was a while ago. He doesn't have a get out of jail free card imo.

True, the pro players would have a little more knowledge about places such as Prague, most Canadians don't. It may have helped a little, how much I am not sure.

The goal starts at 2:15 of this video.

Canada is up a goal when Nash bears down and the Finn player basically tackles him which should have been an automatic penalty shot or at the very least a holding penalty at that point yet the ref seemed to think everything was A o.k, no problem here folks!! You can see him watching it all and for some reason seeming to think nothing was wrong with what the Finn player was doing.

If he doesn't score regardless of the Pittsburgh Steeler tackle and Finland goes on to win that game it would have been pretty scandalous and heavily looked on as a rip job to this day. It could very easily have been a game changing non call with some very serious questions to that ref.

But Nash overcame it and scored one of the great goals in WHC history.

But that game had the potential to be a terrible scandal.

It was best for all concerned that he scored.

Guys I was just looking back at last years thread, and there weren't any player confirmations until April 11th, which means we have a long way until we know anything about this team.

Don't worry guys, I'm 99.9% sure that Giordano and Brodie will be there. Besides McDavid, I also count on O'Reilly and it would surprise me if we didn't see Taylor Hall, or Morgan Rielly up there. I'm not sure about Duchene, MacKinnon, Subban, Stone, and Nugent-Hopkins, but that's only because of injuries. If they are good to go, then it's no question whether they accept or not. Other players that I definitely expect are Sean Monahan and Mark Scheifele.

Not that I expect them for sure, but it won't surprise me if we see Boone Jenner, Adam Henrique, or Cody Ceci.

I also think that defenseman Ryan Murray is probably going to make it, which is a great thing for the NA world cup team. I'd love to see Brandan Gallagher there and I think there is a good chance if he's healthy. I also wouldn't mind seeing Kadri being selected, but not sure if he even has this in mind. The next contract with the Leafs could be, understandably, far more important for him. But who knows.

I also believe that we will be seeing some later playoff additions, so I expect Hockey Canada leaving at least 2 or 3 spots up-front and one or two spots on the back-end, and maybe even one for a goalie. I wouldn't really speculate on which players we could get, because first the playoff seeding may still be changing with 5-6 games to go, and second, on paper predictions means really nothing, so. But I believe we should gain at least 2 or 3 solid players after the first round.

I don't expect to start hearing confirmations until about the 14th. once players get through their team exit interviews and medicals...then we'll start hearing.
