I can live with another down year. Even if we get a top 6 winger like Ladd I still don't see us being a cup contender because there are no top 4 defensemen available for us to trade or sign. The best the Kings can do next year is make the playoffs and get bounced in the first round again.

Our only hope for becoming a contender in the next 2-3 years is if the defensemen we draft develop into the top 4 role. For example, if in 2 years Gravel or McNabb take huge leaps forward or LaDue makes the lineup and shocks everyone, then we will have the cap space and the roster necessary to go for more runs.

My season ticket deposit is due soon...it was easy to put down last year when we traded for Lucic and the Kings spent some money on a back up goalie and we knew some kids had a shot.

So now, we add a career AHL backup and re-signed Trevor Lewis? Jesus.

but you know some kids still have a shot...so there's that

I mean, I'd agree that other teams have caught up, but that assumes that a. last year's team WAS garbage and b. our prospects aren't growing at all either, we're just getting worse. I find this overstated.

Last year's team was solid--they faltered at the end, and it was the inability of the D to move the puck (or get there period, heh) that was an issue. We might have less 'gritz' on the backend this year, but I'd argue healthy Martinez, growing Forbort/Gravel, growing McNabb will take strides towards murdering that issue. A back end of Doughty-Muzzin / McNabb-Martinez / Gravel-Greene / Forbort, McBain? is already an upgrade on Schenn, Scuderi (though he'll likely be the #7) before even 'adding' anything.

In addition, the forward core as currently constructed:

Gaborik-Kopitar-Brown
Pearson-Carter-Toffoli
King-Dowd-Lewis?
Clifford-Andreoff-Nolan
Shore, Mersch

hurts without Lucic, but even before 'adding' anything.

All of the above discounts additions via trade/signing, and the inevitable training camp surprises.

I don't at all see how it's a "garbage" team. As constructed, likely a #3/Wild Card, but a pain in the ass nonetheless. And I don't think DL is going to go all summer with zero movement. let's not pretend that's the lineup we enter the season with...and even if it is, weren't people clamoring to see guys like Mersch et. al.? Now that's a problem? More examples of "DL can't win."

I mean, people did nothing but complain about Schenn and Lucic and now that they're gone we're 'garbage' without them?

I would love to add Thomas Vanek and bump Brown to 3rd line duties, and Lewis to the 4th line to improve those lines..

Vanek-Kopitar-Gaborik
Pearson-Carter-Toffoli

King-Dowd-Brown--King could score 10 goals, Brown could chip in 15-20...so that line is better than last season
Clifford-Shore-Lewis--this line would have speed, toughness, and defensive acumen which we lacked last season when our team was dominated by bottom 6 guys... Im tired of seeing Joel Ward highlights scoring on Quick....

Vanek is a low risk/cost, high reward guy that if he doesn't work won't hurt us financially, and meantime kids like Mersch, Kempe, Amadio will continue to develop in Ontario and be just a 50 minute train ride away......

Vanek is exactly the type of guy the Kings should be looking at, low risk/medium to high reward.

The Kings have a glaring hole on the wing that needs to be filled by a 20 goal scorer, nd there is no one close in the system.

You know it looks bleak when the best idea around is identifying whose dumpster to dive into ( for Thomas Vanish?).

I don't want anything to do with Vanek. Maybe a couple of years ago when he still had the wheels and the skill to justify being a primadonna, but not anymore. Not a Sutter type player at all.

If he will do 1 yr 1 Mil than sure I would take Vanek...honestly rather bring in rene friggin bourque though

I'm guessing LA does not make the playoffs if Anaheim and San Jose maintain their progression.

Edmonton will be scary with Lucic/Larsson/Demers added.

Winnipeg
Edmonton
Calgary
Arizona

These four young teams scare me.

Free agency hasn't even started yet and panic mode has set in. Christ, it's only June 29th. Lot's of time between now & October people.

4 million to do what? Bring in Kris Russell or Matt Martin? Okposo and Eriksson aren't coming to the Kings at a discount. Especially with saved Stamkos money out there.

I like the rookies but they aren't world beaters. Thought about waiting till after free agency but I'll call it now.

The division and conference are tough. If the ducks and sharks falter I think LA is in. If not, look out.

Wait, they haven't billed your card yet? Mine got popped for a bunch of money a few days ago

Thought about that myself but maybe you renewed like I did back in March and JU held out?

His rep might go to bat for him on waiting it out as well. Think JU is in a pricier section, although you might be as well.

Even more than that, they don't have to be a playoff team in October. There's lots of time between now and next April. Or whenever the deadline is. Pittsburgh wasn't winning the Cup last December. SJ wasn't looking like they were going to go 3+ rounds. Who knows, maybe a lot of people get their wish and Sutter gets fired 6 months from now, and they go on some crazy run. If today teaches us anything(and if the rest of history hadn't already taught us), nobody knows what will happen.

Which is why I'd prefer to keep our powder dry at this point, although I like Martin but not at what he will probably cost.

Got to assume that the Stamkos money that is now available will increase prices on most guys.

Calling it now, Gaborik will be traded soon. To who, and for what, I have no idea. It has to happen if he wants to change improve this team.

why??? their 3-4 years away from even competing for a playoff spot...
the oilers are still the oilers
the yotes are in a constant rebuild
the flames and Jets regressed

The problem is, they are compunding a lack of talent on the wing.

Even if they trade him for a pick and use the space to sign an UFA, no one on the market is a clear improvement over a healthy Gaborik.

Lucic? Hes also 6 years younger...

Trade Gaborik, resign Lucic, sign Backes 3 years 4mil per. Sign Matt Martin. Trade King and Clifford for picks or prospects. Trade Pearson + for Hamonic.

Lucic-Kopitar-Toffoli
Kempe-Carter-Mersch
Brown-Backes-Lewis
Martin-Andreoff-Dowd/Nolan

Muzzin-Doughty
Martinez-Hamonic
McNabb-Greene/Gravel

The more I think about it, the more I think we end up with Backes, whether you like it or not.

Also, none of this will happen. :(
