Another useful tool for the "bargaining" stage
takes me back to the 2010 draft.
When we went into that draft, it was a foregone conclusion that we were taking one of Fowler, Gormley, or Gudbranson (we'd have our pick of two after Florida picked the third). So much so that that was the title of the Puck-Rakers article. What actually happened, as we all remember, is that Howson delayed, and delayed, and delayed, then walked up to the podium, delayed even more, and then announced Johansen was the pick. We were all taken aback, everyone was shocked, and a few folks gave up on Howson right then and there.
And yet, given their respective career arcs, it's hard to argue against that pick.
So it's not entirely impossible that that's what's going on right now - it's just that we know about it in advance this time.
Of course, acceptance was helped by the fact that Fowler and Gormley both plummeted like rocks shortly afterward. And I'm not quite confident enough to believe that that's how things would turn out, at this stage. But we have been here before, and it worked out in our favor - one of the few times something has worked in this franchise's favor, in fact.
Am I happy with this possibility? Not really. Especially since, if we just pick Brown, it basically renders the lottery win irrelevant (trading away Clarkson just means that what we "won" in the lottery was a get-out-of-jail-free card). But it doesn't mean we're doomed.
