Blake Out of Hell III: Back in to Hell
What matters more today, cap space and speed, or Cup rings from 3rd and 4th line guys? Maybe nobody wants them, maybe Lombardi and Sutter love them too much, maybe Lombardi is holding onto them until a young guy pushes them out the way King did when he got the job. Any one of those is possible. Maybe Mersch isn't that guy yet. Maybe they don't want Mersch playing because the more goals he scores in the NHL, the more he gets in the summer as a RFA.
Didn't Lombardi also say something about a 5 year plan back in Jan or Feb? Maybe the plan is to suck for a couple years, and to try not to waste the high picks.
I don't think there is anyone on the farm close to ready for Top 6 NHL work as I don't think Kempe would come in and be productive: at least not at this time.
Anyone else that is "ready" for the NHL is probably not going to be a Top 6 forward. I love Mersch around the net, but he has to get there first.
So, yeah, we have Bottom 6 guys down in Ontario. There is no magic bullet. Since they probably wouldn't provide more than the known, veteran quantity that is already here, you send down the guys that are waiver exempt and just push ahead and hope the superstars on this team can carry them to a playoff spot.
Well, the Quick injury changes things. If they are essentially out of it, I think we will see a sell-off of these lower-tier guys in exchange for picks and maybe expansion draft eligible players (if that is allowed?). Helps free up a little bit of cap space as well if they move a Clifford or what have you for picks that can be used for the TT and TP extensions.
Going in to next year, you hope Kempe is ready to step in and contribute after probably getting a cup or even a pot of coffee later this year. Same goes for Gravel and LaDue. Go into next season with a fresh look and maybe even a new coach.
That Luc article in the business journal also touched on the 50th anniversary thing and that they have been planning it for 2-3 years now. No way in hell were they going to roll into this thing with a new coach and an unrecognizable Bottom 6. Even if they wanted to do the latter, the youth isn't necessarily ready for it and there was no money to pick up anyone worthwhile: especially in UFA where a good 3rd/4th line tweener can pick up a cap hit exceeding pretty much every one of the Kings 3rd and 4th liners, except for Brown.
