Like I said on the main board thread....894 is bad. yet it's an order of magnitude better than the .880 we've been getting

Pretty much as expected:

Brief phone conversation w/Dean Lombardi. Confirmed Lindback is coming on PTO but "is going to minors." First reported by Expressen.

The hockey news theorized he'll get a 2 way deal for the rest of the year. He was a pretty good backup at one point, maybe he just needs a good goaltending coach.

Can anyone tell me who our expansion draft exempt players are. Do we have to protect Kempe, Dowd, Gravel, Forbert?

I know givens to protect are

Kopitar
Toffoli
Carter
Pearson

Doughty
Muzzin
Martinez

Kempe is exempt, Gravel may be as well.

Dowd/Forbort would have to be protected.

One big thing people keep forgetting is that Forbort and Dowd will be RFAs, meaning LV has a 48 hour window before the draft to sign anyone from that UFA/RFA pool.... meaning either Dowd or Forbort could be signed away and we would then be exempt from the draft......
I personally think LV will target either McNabb/Greene/Lewis.....
Theoretically, LV could sign Brent Burns and Ben Bishop then pick up guys like McNabb and Ryan Ellis....
It seems likely that McNabb is on his way out imho....

They can sign the unprotected UFA/RFA's. Kings will protect either McNabb or Dowd. Can't protect both unless I'm missing something.

Forbert signed a two-year deal so he won't be an RFA. Gravel is definitely exempt. There is no way DL will protect McNabb over Dowd. The problem is we will lose Martinez instead of McNabb. D&D need to bet LaDue some games to see how ready he might be.

Gravel is not exempt. He's currently playing his 3rd pro season.

Players who are exempt are players who have played 2 or less professional seasons in the NHL, AHL, or ECHL. (I can't recall if other pro leagues count). Also, any unsigned draft pick is also exempt. Kempe, as far as I can tell, is in exempt. He did play at the end of the 2015 season with the Monarchs. But, it was under an amateur try out contract. So I don't believe it counts. Meaning Kempe is currently in his 2nd pro season. Lintuniemi also was on ATO with that Monarchs team.

players who are exempt:

Watson
LaDue
Kempe
Brodzinski
Lintuniemi
Amadio
Cernak
Moverare
Lowry
Sharipzyanov
Luff
Leslie
MacDermid
Bjorkstrand*?
All unsigned draft picks

*I'm not sure about Bjorkstrand since he has played more then 2 pro seasons. But this is his first in North America. And he's on ELC. Although, I'd be utterly shocked if Vegas took Bjorkstrand. lol.

All other players are exposed and need to be protected.

Nope. Gravel is exempt. AHL years only count as "professional" years. That is defined in the CBA and is limited to years played under an NHL contract. Remember Gravel's first year was on an AHL contract.

I can't wait for this to leak out to the main board if Gravel sticks with the team and he's looking good. I can see it now:

LOMBARDI GETS AWAY WITH EXPANSION DRAFT CIRCUMVENTION.

So he's exempt no matter how many NHL games he plays this season?

Draft rule is 7 forward + 3 defenceman or 8 skaters. DD, Muzzin, Martinez, Kopitar, Carter, Toffoli and Pearson will be protected. Than they can protect aditional defenceman(McNabb or Forbort) or protect 3 aditional forwards. So one of Mcnabb, Forbort and Dowd will be protected either way. Vegas will probably take one of them or one of Gaborik, Lewis and Brown(if they are unprotected).

How many players can Vegas take from any given team?

Thanks!!!

Karri Rämö is practising with the Leafs. Can Lindbäck play in Ontario, while he is under PTO?

I just had a seriously sneaky thought......

Let's say Dean wants to use the 7 forwards & 3 defensemen thingy to protect those players, but wants McNabb protected. I.e., he wants to protect the obvious 3 (Doughty, Muzzin, & Martinez) AND McNabb. What if, for 42 games this season, Dean has McNabb playing as a 4th line forward? What if he makes the claim that McNabb is now a forward?

Kopitar
Carter
Pearson
Toffoli
Gaborik
Dowd
McNabb

Doughty
Muzzin

LoL, would that work?!

I don't agree, the Kings will protect both Dowd and Forbert. Kings will go with 7 forwards and 3 D. They simply cannot backfill Dowd from within they have to protect him in addition to the top 3. Martinez *gulp* is replaceable because the team is rich in D prospects and poor in center prospects. Martinez would also free up 4m in cap space.

Another intriguing aspect to this is if the kings protect 7 forwards that leaves two slots open for protection. That has value in the marketplace. DL could trade Gravel and probably get a rich harvest in forward(s) since he's exempt. I don't see DL doing that however. A lot will depend on if the Kings are still in the race by the regular trade deadline.

One per team. They have to select 3 goaltenders, 9 defenceman and 14 forwards. At least 20 of 30 selected players have to be under contract for the 17/18 season.
