What's up with San Jose? They're the only team I consider a serious contender in the Pacific. They just bored with the regular season knowing what they did last year? Or was last year a mirage (hard for me to believe that given their roster)?

Their Defense, and Goalie play has been awful to average, all season long.

They are not as good, as people think they are.

You should be surprised until you take a look at the Pacific Division and how awful it is. We're almost 20% through the season and the division is a collective -40 in goals differential.

Yeah, I think over a season it should even out. I still think Anh, and SJ are better overall teams than LA. Not by leaps and bounds but they have less holes and more productive scorers imho. Edm isn't better but McDavid is a difference maker for them.

I'm hoping LA gets at least a wildcard. If they get in, I still like their playoff game. Can't go limping into the playoffs tho if history has proven anything.

The Kings have 2 more goals in 1 more game played. That seems a little weird, considering circumstances.

Boedker, shooting above his career sh% through 15 games, but only has 16 shots, and just 2 goals, and just 2 points. $4m per year until 2020. Not getting enough from him so far.

That was a bad contract the moment it was signed.

And surprise, surprise, Brent Burns isn't keeping up the nuclear level of play he had for 70ish games, he's settling back into the guy we've seen for 100s of other games.

But they'll bounce back hard, they've had almost even worse luck than us in some ways. Still think it will be SJ, Edmonton, and us/Ana in the end.

Re: our roster, it's impressive that it's taken so many injuries to make us ice LAST year's fourth line, which is what tells me how deep this team is now. If we stay afloat till healthy, and can roll this, we'll be solid going into the playoffs. Not a contender like yesteryear unless our best players return to form, but still a pain in everyone's ass:

Gaborik-Kopitar-Purcell (soft, but we'll see)
Pearson-Carter-Toffoli
Brown-Dowd-Setoguchi
Clifford-Andreoff-Lewis
King, Nolan, Shore

Forbort-Doughty
Muzzin-Martinez (need better out of these two and Doughty, ideally get an RHD for someone...Gilbert?
Gilbert-Gravel
Greene, McNabb

I'm really not sure how to line the D up, to be frank. Each configuration exposes a different concern.

Re: Forbort, via Rosen:

"-Derek Forbort looked assertive and confident for most of his 22:38 of ice time in Sunday’s shootout loss to the Jets. He used his skating to avoid trouble behind his net and spearhead breakouts and has shown an increasing handle of some of the harder areas of the game. “He’s playing with confidence and he’s making the right plays, he’s playing physically, defensively, blocking shots. He’s playing really, really well,” said Doughty, who also commended his play in the corners in turning over pucks. “When him and I are trying to play physical at the same time, the forwards don’t want to come in our corners when they know they’re going to get crushed every single time, so we want to keep up that thing,” Doughty continued. “I don’t want to jinx it but I don’t think he’s been on for a goal against in six games or something like that so he’s been playing awesome.” Doughty was close – the only goal that Forbort has been on the ice for since the Pittsburgh game was Philip Danault’s goal last Thursday in Montreal that put the Canadiens up 3-0. So, one goal against in five games in which he’s drawn at a minimum 17:40 of ice time."

Yep, and that goal in Montreal only happened because Shore interfered with the goalie. In the defensive end DK has been better than anyone not named Doughty.

Derek Forbort is the real deal, he always had the tools and the IQ.

Now it's showing.

This is a lesson for folks, defenders, in some instances, not all mind you, can take a long time to develop.

Willie Mitchell, Rob Scuderi were both about Forbort's age when they broke into the NHL.

Forbort is playing much better than last year, that is for sure.

I disagree. Pens showed us last year that you don't have to have the perfect goalie or defense if you can put enough up ice pressure to back the other team off and use your forwards to shelter the D. That will not work in Kings style hockey. That will not work for Sutter. For Sutter to win the D has to play perfect. It's asking a lot and probably too much from guys like Gavel/Forbort.

Besides Kings can't even beat the Ducks or Sharks at this point (look at the record over the last year) so how do they get out of the division? Oh yeah that's right wildcard to the central division.

While our defense was good both cup years the key to the Kings and DS teams is just that, up ice pressure and a hard fast forcheck and cycle the puck. But up ice pressure (forchecking) game is what DS system is all about. Love the negative all the time fans.

There's no question of it now, we have a logjam of Left D, while being incredibly slim at forward. Forbort, Muzzin, Martinez, Gravel, and McNabb are all capable of playing up and down the line-up, so I forsee a trade coming sometime.

At today it looks like we would also lose one of them to Vegas so it would be better to keep them you don't have to play Gravel.

When McNabb comes back, we will have three good lefty defenseman to fill two spots. Should Gravel get sent down? Or do we scratch McNabb? I wouldn't want to trade any of our defensemen (other than Greene) right now, considering our history with injuries and the fact that we finally have some defensive depth and should use the year to see who shines.

I think McNabb will take his place next to Doughty and Forbort slides to 3rd pair with Gilbert.

Gravel will get sent down. He gets the job done but he's all over the place back there. I doubt if Dean will do it but Gravel would likely return a top notch forward in a trade from a team that will lose a high quality forward to Vegas. DL would at least think about this because we don't have 7 forwards that need protecting.

Cant lose Gravel to Vegas.

I agree I think this is what should happen. Gravel has been good but McNabb played very well before getting hurt there is no way he is a healthy scratch. Find a taker for Greene.

The market for D men this year will be virtually nil. Greene couldn't attract a nibble on waivers. We are stuck with him. If Forbert continues to play well McNabb will take Gravel's spot. Bottom pair is where he BM belongs.

Pretty much as expected, Kopi still healing.

http://lakingsinsider.com/2016/11/14/november-14-practice-notes-kopitar-might-not-be-ready-tuesday/

Anze Kopitar (upper-body) might not be ready for Tuesday night’s game against the Avalanche. He’s in a bit of a holding pattern while on anti-inflammatories, and until the area of his injury improves, he won’t be able to do much. It was a tiny bit out of context, because Darryl Sutter was speaking about the importance of depth contributions, but he told the assembled media on Monday that “you certainly don’t want to have to play without Kopitar, but we’re going to have to play without Kopitar, and that’s a fact.†That’s slightly ominous, but I haven’t heard anything that changes Kopitar’s “day-to-day€ designation.
