Some people still have an extremely warped sense of what true (Bottom six) players produce or actually do.

I seriously think, folks actually believe every single NHL team (other than the Kings) is running around with 20+ goal scorers stocking their bottom six in spades.

Funny enough when I did that study of other teams, there were VERY few who actually got more out of the bottom six than the Kings...those that did just had a top-sixer rolling down there sometimes...but their TRUE bottom sixers were just as bad at producing as ours with the added bonus of being terrible at possession as well.

I dont know how far back people can rwad posts, but i was callingd Dowd a 3c early last year. Of course everyone thought i was crazy

you can if u want to go back to your first post if you want to waste the time to do it. I was also impressed by dowd and thought he would make a better 3 c then shore after his first couple games . You could see more offensive ability

I believe it. You've been great about giving analysis of prospects on this board. Regulate too, among others. Similar to CT KINGS FAN when the team was in Manchester. Dowd justhe seems to be constantly running full throttle and he has the hockey sense as well.

The Kings third line I will predict will be drastically better offensively this year. Dowd makes players around him better. He has excellent vision and passing instincts, something the Kings lack other than Kopitar. He has worked well in the preseason with Purcell, a similar player but less aggressive and physical than Dowd. Welcome to the club Dowder (assumption that he not only made the team, but will be the 3C).

I hope you are right but with king and lewis on the 3rd line i don't see it.

Vets: Guys like Scuderi/Gilbert aren't blocking anyone. When a young guy out plays them they will be replaced. They're just place holders at this point until the youth is ready.

The downside to having a ton of guys signed at 1.4-2M that can be replaced by cheaper guys off the farm is that that money with the Greene money could be used for another top4D. The choice is Brown, bot6 depth + vet depth, or a top4D. Another top4D would go a long way to helping out this club.

Bot 6 production: The bottom 6 isn't the problem. Kings have a pretty nice bot 6. The issue is all the bot6 players that seem to be infiltrating the top6.

Most of the despair is probably from everyone realizing just how bad the top6 is with Brown/Seto/Purcell in it. Seems like a lot of people got used to a Kings team that was middle of the pack in scoring and looks like it'll be taking a step back to the 20+ place again.

Assuming when everyone is healthy. I'd like to see these lines.

Purcell-Kopitar-Gaborik
Pearson-Carter-Toffoli
Brown-Dowd-Setoguchi
Clifford-Shore-Andreoff
Nolan
Latta

Gravel-Doughty
Muzzin-Gilbert
Martinez-Greene
Forbort

Quick
Zack off

Trade
King and McNabb for picks or prospects or an upgrade somewhere.

Season call ups
Kempe
Mersch

Ha! Thx for the nice words. The first time I saw Dowd play was at the WCHA tourney. Ive always thought he could be our Andrew Shaw.

17 forwards and 11 defensemen remain in addition to the already established tandem in net.

Seven cuts will have to be made. I wouldn't be surprised if Setoguchi gets a two-way deal and is assigned to Ontario to start, then if they need a healthy winger who can chip in, they have a veteran forward at their disposal.

I'm afraid Mersch gets sent down in favor of one of many redundant left wings who can barely do anything with the puck.

I don't understand the organization's babying of Mersch, he would be a fine top 6 replacement for Gaborik but will probably be sent down because of the love for useless veterans

Did you guys watch the Kings/Avs game the other day? Mersch couldn't get out of the defensive zone to save his life. He was worse on the breakout then Brown. Kings can't use a guy that can't execute their breakout. That doesn't even cover his neutral zone play.

Mersch would be destroyed by top 6 competition.

Edit: I would love someone to come up with some offense to replace several guys on the roster. Mersch isn't a useful NHL'er at this point.

I'm pulling for Mersch, but realistically he looks great around the net but doesn't look great in most other places. He's a powerplay specialist that otherwise will see 3rd/4th line time. He's like a Dwight King, with better scoring touch but not nearly as good on the wall nor defensively. Mersch's spot is all but guaranteed next year when King leaves for $$$, but I still think we'll see him up and down this year.

From all the young guys, the ones that I think had the best showing, in order, would be:

1. Dowd
2. Forbort
3. LaDue
4. Kempe

The rest of them either don't have it, or need time in the A.

All the Kings bloggers are pointing to Mersch starting if Shore starts on IR and Seto getting a deal until Gaborik comes back and then who knows..?

Pearson can be temporarily replaced by the log jam of extra forwards but Shore and Gaborik are the key. Lewis has moved over to C so a winger like Andreoff could start as a regular as well as Mersch and Seto.

Setoguchi-Kopitar-Brown
King-Carter-Toffoli
Mersch-Dowd-Purcell
Clifford-Lewis-Andreoff
Extra Nolan and Latta

When Pearson comes back you send Mersch down.

The dilemma comes when Gaborik and Shore are healthy...someone like Latta or Setoguchi will have to go down.

Not much of a dilemma. You could cut about half that roster without losing too much. :)

Did the math. You could cut 72.7% of that forward group without much trouble.

Sorry, I'm in a bad mood.

Yep, as per Rosen, pick 23:

Goalies (2): Quick, Zatkoff
Defensemen (11): Greene, McNabb, Muzzin, Scuderi, Doughty, Gilbert, Forbort, Martinez, LaDue, Gravel, MacDermid
Forwards (17): Purcell, Setoguchi, Kopitar, Clifford, Andreoff, Latta, Shore, Lewis, Brown, Kempe, Mersch, Dowd, Pearson, Nolan, Toffoli, King, Carter

Can probably leave out Scuderi and MacDermid off the get go says he. So cut an additional 5!

Here's my go:

Setoguchi-Kopitar-Brown
Pearson-Carter-Toffoli
King-Dowd-Purcell
Clifford-Andreoff-Lewis
Shore

Cut: Latta, Nolan, Kempe, Mersch--(though I'm also thinking Seto doesn't get a contract so keep up Nolan and move Purcell and Lewis up, ugh)

Doughty-Muzzin
Martinez-Gilbert
Forbort-Greene
Gravel, McNabb

Cut: Scuds, LaDue, MacDermid

Don't feel great about the D as the 2nd pairing is soft, but Mcnabb/Gilbert looked awful, and Im trying to get Martinez back on his natural side. Imagine we'll see a lot of rotating there and probably Mcnabb in as a bruiser.

Gravel might be better off playing 20 mins in the AHL then a 7-8 defender. Don't think he makes the cut right now.

Kopitar can't dip to 16 goals again. Carter and Toffoli need to do their thing. At least one of Gaborik, Pearson, Brown, or Purcell needs to go above and beyond expectations.

That, or those last 4 guys get about 15 each, and Setoguchi or Kempe needs to hit 15. Or, Quick needs to stop 93% of shots again.

brown kopitar purcell
king carter toffoli
merch dowd lewis
clifford andreoff nolan
latta shore

muzzin drew
martinez gilbert
McNabb greene
forbort
to start

You guys expecting this are delusional. Martinez never plays with Drew, zero chance he plays with Gilbert (a puck moving right D just a little bit shy of the best dman in the world).
