I agree to an extent. I think he's had a fantastic offseason and I love what he says/does--it's fresh. But I think some people (not you or anyone here, but main board and elsewhere) are really jumping the gun; his team has yet to truly perform, and though he's stockpiling youth and has SOME vets (Doan) on the roster to support them, I read the "I can't go out and spend money on vets blocking our youth" line as he LITERALLY can't do it, not that he wouldn't want to.

If he throws all those guys into the NHL, it's just the Oilers 2.0.

Time will tell how he does and usually writers write to get headlines, it`s better to talk and write after and not get stuck on one line specially that old vets stuff, i bet it`s case to case in his part.

Really like that writeup by JDL.

Only things I would tweak are thoughts on Gilbert and Greene. I recall reading that the Kings were big on "injury metrics," although it was never specified what that is--though this was around the time they landed JDub. To me, I read that as they look at whether a guy has nagging, repeating injuries, or a series of fluke injuries, and how they perform around those injuries. JDub had some fluke injuries but didnt dip in performance on either end; Gilbert and Greene are kind of the opposite at this point (though isn't Gilberts most recent injury the OTHER knee? Don't recall offhand).

To me, they're gambling on Gilbert having a big bounceback into top-4 ability but should be able to play bottom pairing if not--sort of like the Ehrhoff signing--just in case Greene is totally toast. I think JDL mentions all of that but in my humble opinion I think, like with Ehrhoff, they're trying to capture some cheap potential upside beyond the bottom pairing. To be clear, I don't think that will work--I think Gilbert isn't recovering into a top-4 option--but that's what I interpret to be the thought process.

I think Jason mentions it all and like well most of Kings fans like to get some new players, it`s likely how we as fans see players kind a one dimentionally, stats help but one player plays poorly and another have off season they must be replaced. Well that´s just my two cents.

Buyout for Matt Greene is
Caphit
2016-17 $833,333
2017-18 $833,333
2018-19 $833,333
2019-20 $833,333

if it goes to this.

if they send him to the AHL they would pay about 1.5million cap for two years saving 1.0million on the cap.

True, i know that.
Been thinking if he don`t fit to Kings plans and his contract is too much for other teams Lombardi was all ready willing to buy his contract and that way give him chance to play for other team, or he could retain some of his salary.

That he was almost bought out says he is playing condition but giving Gilbert contract might mean he is not in Kings plan or might mean they want Martinez to play on left side and Gilbert or Trotman plays with Muzzin.

It would come down to is 1.5M dead salary for 2 years better than 830K for 4 years.
And the difference isn't 1M it's just over 300K.
Problem is that the buyout window is gone.

I am not sure they put him on waivers for a buyout. I think they could still buy him out as they have register it with the league in the correct time.

They did put him on waivers to buyout to get more cap to give Lucic last offer.
"Defenseman Matt Greene was placed on waivers by the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday for the possible purpose of a buyout." link

"Buyout Period
The buyout period begins the later of June 15 or 48 hours after the Stanley Cup Final ends. It concludes on June 30 at 5 pm EST." Link

Jason Lewis: Does a Healthy Jordan Nolan Have a Chance to Make an Impact? Link

No. Maybe 40 games this year. He's been passed up by Andreoff. If everyone is healthy, Nolan will spend a lot of time in the press box. If he gets more than 50 games this year, it probably means the Kings forwards have been plagued with injuries.

Who's Going to Make the Opening Night Roster? link

Not a great list.

Scuderi more likely to make it then Forbort? Not that Forbort will earn a spot out of camp, but I'd guess they'd keep him as the 7th D to be able to give him a little more time before putting him through waivers.

Dowd and "outside" chance.... sure... the center depth is Kopitar/Carter/Shore/Andy... Dowd can crack that without much of an issue. Lewis is better at wing then center.

Took the safe bets and didn't consider things like waivers.

Dowd will make this roster. No doubt in my mind. Forbort likely too. They don't want to lose these guys for nothing.

Yeah i know just posting everything. Dowd makes for sure, well in case of injury...i`m use on la kings insider.

If Scuderi makes the team DL might as well go into a full rebuild and try to exploit the expansion draft as much as possible to accelerate future competitiveness.

Scuderi and Greene will be in competition for regular spots in the lineup.

Pardon me while I go find the nearest pail to vomit in.

Even Helen-e writes game is getting faster and still...i can see after
McNabb-Doughty
Muzzin-Martinez

there is 3 more player after what i read it`s more likely to have minimum
2 veteran and 1 young player that makes it, was really hope to Sutter say that we are going to play younger players but as i see it is just a day dream.

Is anyone expecting Sutter to say Greene and Scuderi suck, and shouldn't even bother attending camp ever again?

Scuderi was traded to be 7th d-man, lombardi&Sutter said so.

Greene was almost bought out it is fair to assume that "rookies" have better chance than these two oldies.

Maybe not say direct that they suck no their not going to say that but some way act that way.

And how have they acted so far this year? I would say since nothing has started yet, they haven't had a chance to act. If Scuderi and Greene are going to be in camp, you might as well allow them the chance to do something, and at the same time make the young guys work that much harder to win a spot. Although I don't really know what the plan is for the defense with all the moves they made, other than throwing as many defensemen as you can under the cap against the wall and seeing if one or two stick.

The fact that both Greene and Scuderi are legit options to fill spots on the blue line in 2016-17 is simply perturbing to me. Given that this is Darryl Sutter and Dean Lombardi's team, I wouldn't be surprised if one (or both) somehow made the team.

If Greene wasn't hurt, he would've been in the lineup last season and the team doesn't trade for Schenn, and Scuderi was brought in to be an upgrade over Ehrhoff.

The article states that Sutter plans on pairing Doughty and Muzzin together. Which leaves Martinez likely being paired with McNabb on the second pairing, and that leaves Gravel, Trotman and Forbort as the only "young guys" to battle for the last two spots alongside the veterans, Gilbert, Greene and Scuderi.

Either way you cut it, the blue line depth on this team is horrendous. There is a steep drop off after the top 3. The only true middle pairing guy on the blue line is Martinez. After him, it's a mess.

The only hope is that Gravel catches everyone by surprise and exceeds expectations and carries that 3rd pairing by himself. McNabb also needs to show improvement if he's going to be penciled in as a top 4 guy to start the season. Can they just implant Willie Mitchell's hockey IQ into McNabb's body?

This year, year 2016, Sutter and Lombardi said Scuderi was traded for being 7th d-man and also this year Lombardi was willing to buy out his contract. :)
If you mean this season, season has not even started.

We know the pairing will change at times during the season, even if Sutter wasn't the coach. Unless they end up with the depth to play Doughty with Muzzin, who knows how long that pairing will last. Might not even get out of camp. With Greene, and Gilbert, and Trotman, I'm not even entirely sure Martinez will play on the right side. Lombardi and Sutter like the left/right thing on defense. That's why they signed McBain off the scrapheap after Voynov. Why they got Schenn after Greene went down.

I'm interested to see what happens if Greene/Scuderi/Gilbert don't make the team. It makes no sense to have those guys in Ontario, from a Kings or Reign point of view. There's like 16 or 17 defensemen under contract, and Lombardi would rather not have non-goalies in the ECHL. Other teams don't have a glaring need for them in a trade.

I can't remember a group of defensemen, for the Kings or other teams, that is quite as scattershot as this one.
