To be fair if Kopitar was on the Crosby model he'd be getting 1.1 a year :sarcasm:

I was more referencing that Crosby could have taken more (even when the cap was lower) but didn't because he also got that gigantic reebok deal. Obviously it wasn't from the team, but wouldn't it be nice if Kopitar took a 5 million a year deal because he got a giant endorsement from someone? It's really not a fair comparison, plus the cap was 50.3 million when he first signed the 8.7 contract, which was 17% of Pittsburgh's cap. Max is 20%, right? Kopitar's 10 was 71.4, 14% of the cap. So it's not like Crosby took an overwhelming discount.

Crosby makes more than the average NHL salary of 2.1 million in endorsements alone. That's a nice subsidy and way to avoid cap issues.

Moot point since one is the reigning best player in the game, just some context. Get on it, AEG--give Doughty a Herbalife endorsement worth 15 mil!

(A few years ago I remember Toews making over a million a year in endorsements, too FWIW)

I haven't forgotten Doughty's extension. Between now and when it kicks in, the cap will have 3 adjustments. Aside from the lockout, the cap hasn't been flat since the Great Recession.

Aside from the lockout, the lowest the cap has gone up during the cap era in any 3 year period is what, around $4 million? And this is also where trading one of Muzzin/Martinez really comes in if the cap doesn't go up enough in those 3 years.

$4 million is too much for a 3rd pairing guy.

I did my estimates for fitting Tavares in back in November/December. I didn't adjust for their play since then to be consistent.

I put down Forbort for $2 million. If he gets signed for less than that, then it's even more possible this could happen.

I wasn't sure about his contract so I estimated high.

I also penciled in Toffoli and Pearson at $9.5 combined. They are probably under $9 (meaning Toffoli at around $5). So there's another $1 million or so total from the estimates I posted a little while ago.

The cap has been increased by a TOTAL of $4M since the 2014-15 season. Larger increases prior to 2014-15 were largely due to the Canadian dollar being valued much higher against the U.S. dollar than it is today.

Since then the value of the Canadian dollar has returned to a more "normal" value against the U.S. dollar.

Recent increases to the salary cap were made possible by the players agreeing to invoke the escalator clause in the CBA, not increases in revenue.

Once again the cap will increase by only a small amount in the 2017-18 season.

Back in December, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman signaled that it could remain at $73 million or rise upwards of $2 million.

I wasn't sure if I should post this on this thread or the Draft thread but since we need youth, while also capitalizing on our expiring assets would this trade even be feasible....

LA KINGS

John Tavares
Travis Hamonic

NY Islanders

Jeff Carter
Jake Muzzin
Kyke Clifford
11th over all pick....

I think its a wash as far as the talent swapped.. NYI get a slight downgrade at the 1C but a huge upgrade and likely a legit top 2D in Muzzin, a throw in piece in KC and the pick which to a team that will likely need to rebuild anyways is valuable.... This team has reached its peak IMHO

The KINGS get a in his prime star in JT who can help reopen the cup window, while Hamonic is the type of defensive Dman we've missed for awhile...

Kempe - Kopitar - Toffoli
Pearson - Tavares - Brodzinski
Brown - Dowd - Gaborik
Mersch - Lewis - Nolan

Potentially, we could see Amadio come up if his play continues on an upward trajectory...

Forbort - Doughty
Hamonic - LaDue
Gravel - Martinez
McD... we need someone to actually protect our guys...

Quick
Campbell

Tavares>>Carter (Tavares 6 years younger)
Hamonic=Muzzin (Hamonic 2 years younger)
Clifford is a 4th liner
11th OA in a weak draft.

Not sure why NY would do that.

If anybody can identify the importance of having a legit #1 LW it's Luc Robitaille.

I prefer he learned the importance of the following:

#1 Goalie

#1 Defenseman

#1 Center

#2 Defenseman

#2 Center

#3 Center

It's how cups have been won and how cups will continue to be won.

The Islanders can do much better than this for Tavares and Hamonic.

#1 Goalie check... J.Quick

#1 Defenseman check... D.Doughty

#1 Center check... A.Kopitar

#2 Defenseman ..... MIA

#2 Center check... J.Carter

#3 Center.... still searching

Only guys i'd move JC for are JT like players....Muzzin's fall from grace has really hurt this team.. Dowd is not the answer at 3C, it must either be Kempe or hopefully Amadio...

I would honestly like to see what the team can do with a new philosophy before making big moves... LTIR both Gabby and Greene then sign a creative winger and when Gabby is healthy see which Dman is the most expendable and move him (muzz or amart)...

Now look at this from the perspective of other teams in the Pacific Division and Western Conference and do an honest appraisal of whether or not the Kings are still contenders.

You're assuming a big bounce back year from Kopitar, and even at his "Selke best" the team one a single playoff game.

Time to prepare for the future.

2 years at 1.4/1.5 million per seems fair for forbort, or 1 year at 1.2 million. 3 years, he'd get 1.8 - 2 million as my guess. Other teams would pay more, he has the talent to be another Willie Mitchell.
